The burly, mustachioed color man who followed a Hall of Fame football career with a three-decade stint in the broadcast booth is hanging up his microphone. Dan Dierdorf will retire from CBS after this season, his 43rd connected to the National Football League. After a 13-year stint as an offensive tackle for the St. Louis Cardinals, he began his announcing career with CBS Radio in 1984, moving to the TV side the following year. He left CBS in 1987 for ABC, where he did color for Monday Night Football until 1999 and also covered Ncaa games, boxing and the 1988 Winter Olympics. He has been with CBS for the past 14 years. Dierdorf’s often brusque, call-it-like-he-sees-it style earned him plenty of detractors — snarky L.A. sports radio legend Jim Healy famously referred to him as “Dan Dierdork” — but in 2008 he became one of only four Pro Football Hall of Fame players to receive the...

“We didn’t get mad, we got smart,” HBO CEO Michael Fuchs said about hitting The Wall, looking back at HBO stalling in 1984 from the vantage of the early 1990s. Actually, a lot of the rank and file didn’t get mad or smart; we’d seen 125 of our friends and colleagues get shown the door when the company had suddenly flatlined after eight years of phenomenal growth, and what we got was scared.
But it’s to the credit of HBO’s execs that whatever anxieties they may have had, they showed no panic or even nervousness in public. Instead, they poured any concerns into energetically and immediately addressing the question of, “What do we do now?” The world we knew had changed and there was no going back to the Gold Rush days of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The NFL has quietly passed a rule during its fall meeting that will force one franchise per year to be filmed for HBO’s Hard Knocks. The news came the same day that the league was fending off some negative PR over PBS’ premiere of the football concussion docu League Of Denial and President Obama weighing in on the Washington Redskins nickname flap. The popular series, which follows a team through preseason, had a tough time finding a subject this year. Five teams declined to participate before the Cincinnati Bengals — a good-not-great small-market franchise with a negligible national following — agreed to do it for a second time. The NFL and HBO signed a multiyear extension for the program in July, so something had to be done. Under the new rules, teams can volunteer to be on the program, but now the league will select one if there are no takers.

Discovery Channel announced this morning it will air a two-part special, NFL In Season, in which the network goes on the road with the NFL as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars prepare for two “critical regular season games” — in London. It will be produced by NFL Films. The two-part special will premiere Friday, October 4, and Friday, November 1. In this way the special will book-end PBS’ Frontline special about head injuries sustained by NFL players, League Of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis, which is now scheduled to debut on PBS on October 8. The Frontline project was originally scheduled to debut as a two-parter October 8 and October 15, but that was before Espn pulled out of that documentary, calling it a “branding” issue. Anonymous sources in August told the New York Times that Espn, which reportedly pays the NFL upwards of $1 billion a year for Monday Night Football rights,...

This season’s ‘Catfish: The TV Show,’ which premiered Tuesday, June 25 at 10 p.m. on MTV, features so many Omg moments that it is best to analyze each episode with equally expressive reactions. And not just text-based or still image reactions — Gif reactions.
This episode apparently originally aired on Sunday before the VMAs. Did anyone watch it then? Does anyone watch this show at all? Does anything matter anymore? Max makes baby crying noises really well, and that’s all that matters.
Nev needs to stop forcing unnatural banter in these nondescript hotel openers. It’s not a good look.

Summer is here and for NFL fan, the agonizing post draft drought is almost over. In the heat of late summer, almost 3000 men will compete in the ultimate job interviews; NFL training camps. Each of the 32 teams will take a training camp roster to camp and whittle those 90 hopefuls in a active roster of 53 and an eight man practice squad. For a select few superstars and veterans, this is a more part of the process, though a new coaching regime might test a veteran’s ability to survive their 11th or 12 camp. But for 100s of other highly touted rookies, undrafted players, on the bubble veteran players and aging veterans, training camp means a job or no job as they show their wares over the next month.

In the 12-year, eight-season history of HBO’s Hard Knocks, only one franchise – the Dallas Cowboys, often cited as “America’s Team” – has been featured twice. Make that two. The premium network on Monday officially tapped the Cincinnati Bengals to star on its popular series chronicling life at an NFL training camp. The Bengals first were featured in 2009, with the season earning a pair of Sports Emmys. Last year’s Hard Knocks showcased the Miami Dolphins, and plenty of screen time was devoted to aging former All-Pro wide receiver, who was known as Chad Ochocinco when he was onscreen with the ’09 Bengals. The show began in 2001 with then- and current defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, followed by the Cowboys in 2002. But that was the last Hard Knocks until the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007. Since then it has aired every year expect 2011, when the series went dark because no team...

First of all, I want to say that if I ever become a crab fisherman, I'm going to try to sign up on the Northwestern.

I don't know if I have the physical strength, but I would really try hard.
You'd love it!
My first question for you is, what's your definition of “fearless”?
It's overcoming. That's all it is. Pushing through.
What makes you fearless?
Well, I never really looked at myself as fearless, to be quite honest. But it seems like the older I get,...

Washington Nationals teen sensation Bryce Harper has proven advanced beyond his years, ever since he earned his Ged after his sophomore year of high school so that he could accelerate the timetable for being drafted by a Major League Baseball team. Now 19, he’s hitting .287 with seven home runs for the first-place Nats.
But it’s not only on the field where Harper is making an impact. Last week in Toronto, a local reporter asked Harper if he planned to take advantage of Canada’s 18-and-over drinking laws to celebrate a big home run. Harper, a Mormon from Las Vegas,...

Football star Tom Brady has sung on Saturday Night Live, been immortalized on The Simpsons, and popped up on an episode of Entourage, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise when he delivered another funny performance in a recent FunnyOrDie video to promote Under Armour. Brady plays the comic straight man, just hoping to locate some gear at a California sporting goods store when the salesperson and some customers become fascinated by him — not by his stardom, but what they perceive as his thick Bah-ston accent. In fact, no one seems to recognize him as the Patriots Super Bowl quarterback,...

After struggling to find an NFL team to chronicle for its seventh season, HBO’s Hard Knocks has landed in Little Havana, reports the Washington Post. The sports miniseries will focus on the Miami Dolphins, who accepted the opportunity to step into the spotlight after the Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, and Minnesota Vikings all told the network “no thanks.”
According to the Post, the team will struggle with, among other things, the search for a franchise quarterback (all hopes are pinned on rookie Ryan Tannehill), the loss of wide receiver Brandon Marshall,...

A heaping plate of bite-sized TV news, including items on yet another singing competition on NBC and another Thomas Harris-related series in development.
- HBO will focus on the Miami Dolphins for the new season of its docu-series "Hard Knocks," which returns after a one-year, NFL lockout-induced hiatus. The show about the Dolphins' training camp under first-year coach Joe Philbin will debut Aug. 7, 10 days after the team opens camp. [NFL/HBO]
- "NCIS" star Michael Weatherly will play the other side of the law when he guest-stars on TNT's new series "Major Crimes" later this summer. He'll play a con artist posing as a life coach -- and who dreams of having a show on Own -- in an episode set for early in the show's run; "Major Crimes" premieres Aug. 13. [TVLine]

HBO will return for a seventh season of its NFL training camp series Hard Knocks on August 7 featuring the Miami Dolphins, a year after the network scrapped the Emmy-winning documentary series because of the NFL lockout. Espn reported that the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets were also mentioned as possible teams to be profiled; in 2010, the Jets’ season on the show earned HBO three Sports Emmys. Five hourlong episodes are planned for the show, co-produced with NFL Films. It’s a logical move for the Dolphins, whose ownership group is trying to drum up fan interest in a mediocre team. Owner Stephen Ross has brought in celebrities like Gloria Estefan and Venus and Serena Williams as minority owners, and the team has a red-carpet entrance to the team’s Sun Life Stadium for celebrities attending games.

It's turning into a Hard Knocks life for Reggie Bush—but he comes prepared! HBO, which has selected a team to shadow through the NFL preseason for seven seasons now, has picked the Miami Dolphins, Bush's latest team, for its 2012 installment. While most of those guys are used to playing for an audience of millions, not many of them are used to having cameras follow them around behind the scenes. But Bush has practice, remember? Kim Kardashian's now-ex-boyfriend was prominently featured on earlier seasons of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, so the transition might not be as tough for him. The seventh season of Hard Knocks, featuring Bush and his fellow Dolphins,...

Exclusive: Starz has signed an exploratory deal with Ben Silvrman’s Electus to search together for premium network-suited unscripted programming that would compliment Starz’s original programing slate. Electus sought the partnership with Starz after taking a look at the TV landscape and seeing a void in the unscripted space on premium cable, Electus CEO Chris Grant said. So far, reality TV’s presence on premium cable has been limited to sports documentaries (HBO’s 24/7 and Hard Knocks, Showtime’s The Franchise) and erotic fare (HBO’s Real Sex). That is not a direction Electus and Starz want to follow. “We are looking for tentpole ideas with strong dynamic characters, a little bit of danger and unprecedented access; we want to tell stories that couldn’t be told elsewhere,” Grant said, adding that he and Electus’ development team are hoping to hear from reality producers who have come up with...

Update, Monday Am: A lot of great news for Liev Schreiber this morning. His deal with Showtime to star in the drama pilot Ray Donovan formally closed, and the network just made the official announcement. And, in what appears to be a change of heart, HBO Sports has renewed its overall deal with the actor to continue to be the voice of virtually all HBO documentaries as well as the 24/7 reality series, and the NFL reality series Hard Knocks. During the lengthy negotiations, HBO had considered not to re-up the overall with Schreiber and open up the field to other narrators, but in the end it extended Schreiber. I hear that the actor’s Showtime series contract allows for that. Previous, Sunday Pm: With a deal to star in Showtime’s pilot Ray Donovan, Liev Schreiber may one day become the face of the pay cable network. But at the same time,...

Body of Proof gave me flashbacks. Not to any rave I've ever been to, but to those cheesy after school specials they used to show on TV. Despite a few bright moments, "Hard Knocks" wasn't one of my favorite outings for the series.
It started with Bud and Samantha breaking the news of the Jake's death to his parents. It was the cliche of the parents being the last to know as mom ran upstairs to wake up her son, only to find out he had snuck out the night before and really was dead. The father reacted with typical denial and I found the entire scene tiresome.
Jake turned out to be your regular high school bully and I picked Maxine as the killer as soon as she turned up. Isn't it always the geeky honor student/scorned love interest? Even the ring being flipped felt like something we've seen done before.

How can you tell if someone's lying?
Well, if that quote isn't the premise of this entire show, I'm not sure what is. "Sex, Lies and Hard Knocks High" took us one step closer to everything we've been waiting for.
Sutton is out of jail and slumming it in Vegas. Lucky for her she has an awesome, loyal, hilarious best friend in Lexi. Lexi was so close to Emma she knew instantly that it wasn't Emma. I think Sutton was shocked at what it's like to have a friend like that.
Hopefully now that Sutton has seen what Emma has been dealing with in Vegas, she'll go easy on her when they reunite. The scene when she got in Clarice's face and told her off had to be my absolute favorite Sutton scene of the whole season. She may be stuck up, but she can also stand up to someone...

HBO's Hard Knocks was cancelled this year, but in its place HBO is airing Hard Knocks: A Decade of NFL Training Camps. The 90-minute special is not so much a recap as it is a behind-the-scenes episode about the show's production, from outtakes to footage of the production. From montages of practical jokes and farts, to interaction with the producers, to anger at the crews, it's both insightful and fun. It debuted last week and...

The NFL lockout may have finally come to an end, but HBO's "Hard Knocks" has been sent to the showers. HBO Sports and NFL Films issued a joint statement that this year’s five-episode season of the reality series has been canceled, due to the protracted labor dispute. Each year, the series -- which premiered in 2001 -- follows a different NFL team through training camp as it prepares for the upcoming season. However, with the havoc that the lockout played with the league and its schedule, this summer’s season has been canceled. “The...

It looks like we'll have to get our profanity fix elsewhere this fall. Today, HBO Sports and NFL Films announced that HBO's Hard Knocks, a five-episode series that follows a single NFL team during preseason training camp, will not air this season. The companies in a release blamed the lockout-shortened offseason that will condense teams' prep times for the upcoming season, but several teams reportedly declined offers to host the show. The four-month labor stoppage ended Monday when NFL players and owners agreed to a new 10-year collective bargaining agreement. HBO said a 90-minute edition of Hard Knocks cobbled together with footage from previous seasons will premiere Aug. 31, and that the series will resume in 2012. Last year's Hard Knocks featured the New York Jets and coach Rex Ryan, who started off the first show of the season with a swear-word-rich rant that he said he eventually had to apologize to his mother for.

Hard Knocks, the HBO reality series that follows a football team's pre-season training, won't be filmed this year because of the NFL lockout. This won't be the first time the show has taken a break; it didn't air new seasons from 2003 to 2006. Earlier, Sporting News reported that "several...
