In this film, Leslie Nielsen gives full expression to the comic genius which he began to reveal in AIRPLANE! Frank Drebin is one of the great comic characters in film.
Just as in AIRPLANE! we get a grand spoof -- this time detective/police movie/TV cliches get roasted. The sight gags, Nielsen's dead-pan, and the wonderfully silly dialogue add up to a great comedy.

- TriviaSeveral years later, Queen Elizabeth II attended a Oakland A's versus Baltimore Orioles game in Baltimore, Maryland, and met both teams in their respective dugouts. Reggie Jackson, then an Oakland A's coach, was the first person in the receiving line in the Oakland dugout. Some news channels showed gag footage from this movie of the Queen's impersonator throwing out the first pitch. Leslie Nielsen met the real Queen Elizabeth II in 2005.
- ErroresIn the video/theatrical release, in the final battle with Vincent Ludwig, Frank Drebin's chest protector has deflated without reason. (note: the network television broadcast adds a scene in which Ludwig shoots the chest protector, causing it to deflate.)
- Créditos curiososMany of the bit players are credited next to the one line of dialogue they had in the film. For example: "It's Enrico Pallazzo!" ... Mark Holton
- Versiones alternativasOn a recent Comedy Central airing in 2006, the entire opening scene with Frank Drebin and the hostile foreign leaders was cut, instead going straight to the opening credits. This is probably due to sensitivity regarding the conflict overseas.
