If you love stories about movies that take us behind the scenes of what we only know as movie magic, then you might be in luck, as Apple TV+’s latest series, The Studio, is a satirical look at Hollywood culture. Created by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez, the satirical dark comedy series is a star-studded, hilarious ride through the streets of Hollywood.

The Studio follows Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of the film production company Continental Studios. Now, it’s upto Matt to save the failing company in a failing industry while also trying to make great movies that will be remembered long after he is gone. He soon finds himself overwhelmed with the daily pressures, which include dealing with eccentric colleagues, finicky artists, and soul-sucking financiers.

Before I made my way to writing about Hollywood full time, in my twenties I toiled in the publicity bullpen at United Artists in Manhattan’s tenderloin district, was a press agent at Pmk New York, was unit publicist on John Carpenter’s “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” and James L. Brooks’ “Terms of Endearment,” and served as publicity manager at Twentieth Century Fox in Century City. I sat around the table at countless marketing meetings, wrote press releases, screening invites, and press kits, wrangled celebrities and photographers at glitzy premieres, and participated on release and Oscar campaigns.

By the time I jumped to the other side as Risky Business columnist at LA Weekly; movie beat reporter at Entertainment Weekly; West Coast Editor of Film Comment, Empire, and Premiere; and senior writer at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, I was steeped in insider knowledge and sources. And...

It's an intimidating cast list, to be sure — and that's before you even get to the guest stars of Apple TV+'s The Studio, which reads like something out of a Hollywood Rolodex, if those still existed.

So it's perfectly understandable that Chase Sui Wonders, who plays career-hungry assistant-turned-executive Quinn, was "petrified," as she puts it, her first day on set. "Being surrounded by all of these comedy legends is a dream," she says. "But Seth and Evan and all the actors involved are really warm and welcoming, which is not necessarily the case for a room full of comedians trying to be really funny. They all want you to crush."

Exclusive: Oscar-winner Charlie Kaufman has found his next project as he is set to write and direct Later The War and tapped Eddie Redmayne, Tessa Thompson and Patsy Ferran to star. Kaufman adapted the script from the short story Debby’s Dream House by acclaimed author Iddo Gefen from his short story collection titled Jerusalem Beach.

The original short story follows a man who manufactures dreams for people but ultimately begins creating nightmares for them. Exact plot details of the feature adaptation are unknown.

This year’s Grammy week will be looking a little different, as the show will take place shortly after Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Music’s biggest night will mark the first awards show to take place in L.A. since the tragedy began on Jan. 7, and many of the typical Grammy events have been canceled as the usual players — including Spotify and the major labels — redirect resources to aid wildfire relief efforts.

Craig Finn, longtime frontman of The Hold Steady, has announced Always Been, his sixth studio album set for release on April 4th. He’s also shared a new song, “People of Substance.”

Always Been was produced by Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs, and features guest vocals from Kathleen Edwards and Sam Fender. Various members of The War on Drugs also play on the album, which was produced in Granduciel’s Burbank, California studio.

“I believe this to be the most narrative record I have made,” Craig Finn said in a statement. “Most songs concern a protagonist who pursued a career as a clergyman despite a lack of faith. The record tells the story of his rise and fall and redemption, while also filling out the details of his travels and the world in which he lives. I am very proud of what we made, I hope you enjoy.

At a recent Aventura concert in the Dominican Republic, one woman fulfilled her dream of kissing singer Romeo Santos… but it came at the cost of her marriage.

In videos of the viral moment, the fan — named Miriam Cruz — can be seen hopping onto the stage and greeting each member of the bachata group, giving an extended kiss to Santos. The crowd responded with applause, and Cruz sat beside her celebrity crush with her hand on his lap for a bit, as the band performed their song “La Guerra.”

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim has debuted to $4.6 million at the box office, according to a recent report by Variety. However, it was revealed that the film’s performance in the box office was not Warner Bros.’ primary focus.

The anime film, which was produced on a $30 million budget, was developed and rushed into production primarily to safeguard New Line Cinema’s rights to adapt J. R. R. Tolkien’s works.

The studio has held these rights through a licensing agreement with Zaentz Co. since the late 1990s. Though the specific terms of the contract are not public, it is believed that Warner Bros. is required to maintain active development and production of Tolkien-related projects to retain the rights.

In early 2022, Zaentz Co., which controls a portfolio of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit rights, reportedly began exploring a sale of its Tolkien holdings.

“Not Fade Away” closed out the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony Sunday, just as honorees The Grateful Dead had used Buddy Holly’s ode to enduring love to close out hundreds of concerts over the years.

The packed house danced in the aisles to the bouncy beat after a night of honoring the Dead and other recipients of the lifetime achievement award for artistic accomplishment: director Francis Ford Coppola, jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt. The venerable Harlem theater The Apollo, which has launched generations of Black artists, also was recognized.

J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings universe has a rich history that was explored in detail in his book, The Silmarillion. The book explains the vast record of Middle-earth's various periods, wars, and species. It enriches the world, but it also explains exactly why some conflicts are so fascinating that they continue to resonate today, half a century after it was published.

One of those stories will be immortalized in the upcoming animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which will be released on December 13. The story explores the origin of Helm's Deep's name, a bloody war that dominated an entire region, and a fascinating feud that led to bloodshed.

Right in the midst of their co-headlining tour with The War on Drugs, The National have announced Rome, a new live album set for release on December 13th.

The album was recorded live, without any overdubs, during a June 3rd, 2024 show at Rome’s Cavea at Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone. It’s comprised of 21 tracks and will be released as both a digital and 2xLP vinyl set. Members of The National’s Cherry Tree fan club will also be able to purchase a red, green, and white triple LP (a la the Italian flag) with five additional songs.

The War on Drugs released their first live album, Live Drugs, in 2020. Now, the Adam Granduciel-led band is back with a follow-up live album, aptly titled Live Drugs Again, due on September 13th via Super High Quality Records. Today, alongside the album’s announcement, a live cut of their 2014 song “Burning” has arrived as the lead single.

With a 11-song tracklist drawing from several of their studio albums, Live Drugs Again was recorded between February 2022 and December 2023 at shows in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia.

Lucius have joined forces with The War on Drugs frontman Adam Granduciel for their new song “Old Tape.” They’ve also shared a video for the track, which features comedian, actor, and musician Fred Armisen.

The song arrives as a standalone single ahead of Lucius’ tour opening for The War on Drugs and The National, which kicks off on the East Coast in early September (get tickets here). Built on a quick tempo and some signature yearning guitar from Granduciel, “Old Tape” is a towering, anthemic offering from Lucius. “And once in a while/ you turn up the dial/ to an old tape playing in my head,” Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig sing in unison, before belting “I’ll tune it out and live instead.”
