A total of 31 animated features, 169 documentary features and 85 international features are eligible for Oscar nominations this season, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed on Thursday.
In the animated feature category, high-profile studio films like Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Universal/DreamWorks’s The Wild Robot and acclaimed indies like Memoir of a Snail are joined in the running by longer shots like The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, a film jettisoned by Warner Bros. that wound up with the distributor Ketchup Entertainment.
The documentary feature race, meanwhile, includes titles that have dominated at the doc community’s precursor awards, including Nat Geo’s Sugarcane, Netflix’s Daughters and MTV’s Black Box Diaries; two that count Malala Yousafzai as an executive producer, Apple’s Bread & Roses and The Last of the Sea Women, and two that count Jennifer Lawrence as an EP,...

Happy Campers immediately recalls the illuminating 2020 Oscar-winning film, Nomadland, which earned Frances McDormand another Best Actress Oscar. With its simplistic yet effective and heartfelt storytelling, that film beautifully showcased a fringe side of American life that is not often brought to the screen. It was a story about everyday people, unfettered by societal pressures to constantly do, do, do and get, get, get. It was a story about the lives of everyday people that we can all relate to. Audiences will get another great chance to feel something similar with the great new documentary, Happy Campers.
Directed mindfully by Amy Nicholson, a New York-based filmmaker and commercial director, the filmmaker focuses her lens on the residents of a rundown trailer park in Chincoteague Island, Virginia, which is being forced to shut down for capitalistic interests. Its a story of loss and love, past and present, and something that cant ever...

One of the few indicators of where Amy Nicholson’s documentary Happy Campers takes place is a shot of wooden signs pointing mostly to cities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. At another point, a woman discusses moving down from the Jersey shore to join her boyfriend at the coastal trailer park at the center of the film. If you guessed that we’re in Virginia, you’d be correct, but where we are is ultimately less important to Happy Campers than celebrating the sense of community that can be fostered off the beaten path.
Throughout the film’s slim runtime, Nicholson’s camera peers into the quiet lives of the working-class individuals who reside at least part time at the scrappy trailer park. Men fish, mow lawns, fix roofs. Women and children swim. As evening sets in, families gather around picnic tables to eat and drink. Inside trailers, friends gather to play cards,...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about filmmakers! Not the films that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, as a sort of B-Side to our own recent Bruce Willis B-Side episode, we speak to screenwriter Daniel Waters about Hudson Hawk! And much, much, much more!
Daniel and I talk about the overnight success of Heathers getting made, the overnight failure of Hudson Hawk, followed by the complicated reaction to Batman Returns. Oh, and what about the three seashells in Demolition Man?
We also discuss Renny Harlin and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, that incredible Sandra Bullock performance, and his underseen directorial efforts (Happy Campers and Sex and Death 101).
Questions asked and answered include: what happened to all of the individual style in screenplays? Why does everybody save the cat these days? Is there a...

Happy Campers director Amy Nicholson with Anne-Katrin Titze: “There are times when you get lucky and you get magic.”
I first met Amy Nicholson in 2013 when I was on the jury of the inaugural First Time Fest with Gay Talese, the B-52’s Fred Schneider, and Killer Films’ Christine Vachon. Amy’s documentary, Zipper: Coney Island's Last Wild Ride, won our Outstanding Achievement in Editing Award (by John Young and Jonah Moran): “Fast-paced editing that captures, in a balanced way, a story about humanity in an age of greed. The editing works like the Zipper itself, connecting the ride with the story of Coney Island.”
Amy Nicholson often places the people side-by-side, Wes Anderson style.

An Rv park on Chincoteague Island, Virginia, faces extinction in Amy Nicholson’s lyrical, if somewhat slight, documentary “Happy Campers.” A portrait of a community in flux, Nicholson trains her camera on the inhabitants and seasonal tourists of Inlet View, a rundown park with ocean views that houses lower to middle-class residents. After the property is sold off to developers, who hope to capitalize on the waterfront location and build luxury vacation spots, the residents are forced to leave a place that many have called home for decades.

Which co-star Can Mark Wahlberg be talking about?

It's been far too long since Happy Endings fans have been able to enjoy an original episode of the ABC comedy: The show's season finale was all the way back on April 4. And because Alphabet execs seem to enjoy torturing die-hard fans, the network last week revealed that Happy won't begin its third season until Oct. 23. (We'll spare you the math: That's six months between originals). Vulture can't speed up the hands of time, but we can offer Happy campers the salve of spending a few minutes with series star Adam Pally, whose Max Blum (in full Mandonna garb) was last seen serenading his friends with a rockin' cover of Like a Prayer. When it eventually returns, producers told us we can expect to see Max paying homage to a classic Kathy Bates role, quite possibly Misery. (Pally's response when hearing of this? "Pass! If it's not a direct...

Wristcutters: A Love Story Dir. Goran Dukic (2006) A slight digression: musician and sometime actor, Eugene Hutz, best known for his work as Gogol Bordello's frontman and as Alex in the film version of Everything is Illuminated, must have the charisma of 1000 suns. Or the type of charisma that inspires people to become obsessed with him. There's a documentary on him, The Pied Piper of Hutzovina, and Madonna's debut as a director, Filth and Wisdom, is mostly centered around Hutz. Wristcutters: A Love Story, has a central character of Eugene, a Russian musician played by actor Shea Whigham, who is based on Hutz. Imagine how charismatic and interesting Hutz must be to inspire so many people's art... Mindboggling, right? And in Wristcutters, Eugene shows our hero, Zia (an all-grown-up Patrick Fugit), around the afterlife limbo for suicides where the movie is set. Based on the short story Kneller's Happy Campers...
