E. Niwas’ third feature film Dum, which clocked 22 years on January 24, is like a newspaper report. Grim, dark, traumatic, and yet thrilling. In the working class hero’s fight with a corrupt law enforcer, the audience might mutter: “Thank God it isn’t us.”
Protagonist Uday Shinde, played by Vivek Oberoi, takes on the immoral might of a villainous cop Shankar, played by Atul Kulkarni, a human being so degenerate and debased that he makes Sholay’s Gabbar Singh seem like a comic strip character.
There’s nothing colourful, uplifting or comforting about Dum. If you regard cinema as a form of escapist entertainment, then Niwas’s film is a no-no. But if you regard cinema as a mirror of social reality, then Dum is a hard sock in the jaw.
A corrupt cop barges into an honest colleague’s home and tries to gas his wife to death. When she escapes,...

The holiday season is here, and with it comes a whole lot of gift-worthy books, as well as — if you don’t have kids — plenty of time to do some reading. This final Film Stage books column of 2021 features a diverse mix of glossy making-ofs, some career retrospectives, and much more.
One sad note that I neglected to mention in my last two columns: J.W. Rinzler, author of the definitive making-of books about the original Star Wars trilogy, passed away on July 28. He set the standard for detailed, ever-readable studies of how some of our favorite films came to be; this column most recently featured his work in November 2020, when reviewing The Making of Aliens. As we move into a new year, it seems fitting to recognize the writing of a man whose behind-the-scenes accounts were often as memorable and noteworthy as the films themselves. (Read more about Rinzler on starwars.

Indian helmer Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show” walked off on Saturday with the top prize, the Golden Spike, at the 66th Valladolid Intl. Film Festival, one of Spain’s biggest and oldest film events and a bastion of festival-prized art film titles.
The French-Indian co-production marks Nalin’s homage to celluloid and is told through the eyes of a nine-year-old boy whose life is turned on its head after he watches his first film at the cinema. World premiering at Tribeca, it became the first foreign-language feature to score as the first runner up for Tribeca’s Audience Award.
Writer and director Pan Nalin said: “What we started in our solitude in a remote countryside of Gujarat has now started to echoing in multitudes the world over. Winning the best picture Golden Spike at the Seminci is like belonging to the rich history of cinema that Valladolid has stood for nearly seven decades.

Fans of iconic cat and mouse duo Tom & Jerry are having a good time of it at the moment. Tom & Jerry The Movie only hit theaters back in February and subsequently arrived on HBO Max, and now the pair are coming back to HBO Max with a brand new series, Tom and Jerry in New York, which will premiere July 1st. The series will see the rivals settling into a new home in the city's Royal Gate Hotel, with all kinds of madcap hijinks ensuing in and around the streets of America's best known city. While the movie received middling reviews, placing the pair on the small screen where they have always worked best could well see the duo back to their best.
Coming from Renegade Animation and directed by Darrell Van Citters, the series should be in good hands, as Renegade have been involved with the Tom and Jerry...

His last couple of films have been hard hitting affairs. Be it Shahid or Aligarh, director Hansal Mehta has stepped into a zone which has shook many a viewer, courtesy the realistic depiction of some heartbreaking tales that were waiting to be told on screen. Now with Aligarh, which is based on the real life tale of Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras from Aligarh Muslim University who was sacked from his position on charges of homosexuality in 2010, one expects nothing less, what with accomplished actors like Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao stepping into the fold.
“Well, the film is very close to me and I have been traveling with it to various film festivals. I have seen the response across the globe with different kind of audiences,” says Hansal, “In fact when I saw the first cut of the film, I told Manoj there and then that this is his finest performance till date.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one example of a man who went from rags to riches, literally! From being a small-time watchman to playing a role equivalent to the lead, the actor has surely shot to fame with hardwork.
Nawazuddin started his career with Shool (1999), where he played the role of a waiter. Surprisingly, the movie also starred Manoj Bajpayee (who was the main lead in Gangs Of Wasseypur, where Nawazuddin gained the much-deserved recognition). However, he started getting noticed from Anurag Kashyap's movie Black Friday.
Nawaz then played a terrorist in Kabir Khan's New York, and now the actor plays a sidekick in his upcoming movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan starring Salman Khan along side.
He also did minor roles in 2010 content-driven movies Peepli Live and Paan Singh Tomar, but got hugely noticed in them. He also played a major role in another Irrfan Khan starrer Lunchbox (in 2013) and Vidya Balan...

Manoj Bajpai is known for his strong characters portrayed on-screen. The actor who has won many accolades for his roles in movies like Shool, Satya, Zubeidaa and Raajneeti amongst many others has been paired yet again opposite Big B in a negative role for his upcoming movie Satyagraha.
The National Film Award Winning actor prefers to do a villainous role while sharing the screen space with the mega star. He feels that no other character stands strong enough opposite Amitabh Bachchan and thus it is better to do a negative role.
“In an Amitabh Bachchan film, there’s no other role which is better than his. In such a situation it’s only the negative role which is as good as his, so it’s best to go for the negative. I must say in films like Aks, Aarakshan or even Satyagraha now, the roles were written very carefully,” said Bajpai.

This week Raveena Tandon has much reason to rejoice. She has won the Best Actress award for her performance in Sudipto Chattopadhyay's Shobhna's 7 Nights at the Houston Bollywood Film Festival which concluded on October 7 with the announcement of Raveena's triumph.
Interestingly, there is only one acting award at the Houston Bollywood Film Festival which covers both the male and female category of nominations. Raveena therefore beat competition from Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi in Dibakar Bannerjee's Shanghai to get the award.
Squealing in delight from Houston after the announcement, Raveena said, "I've hardly received awards in my career so far. I did get the National award for Daman. But that was a one-off thing. I thought I deserved recognition for Shool and Aks. But I was seen as glamorous commercial actress. Hence, not eligible for awards. Now when I've played the most glamorous role of my life, I get the Best Actress award.

I am sure that I have said it before but I have no problem saying it again: Manoj Bajpayee is one of my favorite actors! He amazes me with how deep he gets into characters and his performances are always thrilling. He is also one of my favorite actors to interview and we always have a great conversation more than a strictly question and answer interview. This time the subject was Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur. Staying true to its real life influences, Gangs of Wasseypur explores a revenge saga through the socio-political dynamic in the coal and scrap trade mafia of Wasseypur, through the imprudence of a place obsessed with mainstream ‘Bollywood’ cinema. A two-part film, according to the director, it the story and evolution of Wasseypur. He wrote in his director’s notes, “From digging coal to killing someone over a innocuous brawl to vengeance being inherited.

Mumbai, Dec 9: Actor Manoj Bajpayee, known for his versatility, has portrayed a character inspired by myhtological demon king Raavan in his next film 'Lanka'. But he says he does not believe in the word 'villain'.
'I don't do villainous or positive roles. I do human being roles. They are positive and negative both. If you say that I do only villain roles then your research is wrong,' Manoj told reporters here.
Manoj has played negative roles in films like 'Aks', 'Road', 'Raajneeti' and 'Aarakshan', but maintains that his characters can't be called villains.
''Shool' was not villain's role, 'Zubeidaa'.

It's been a long and chequered history of disrupted and fractured association between Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap. After they collaborated on Satya, they had parted acrimoniously. But after showering scathing criticism on Varma, his ex- protégée Kashyap has mended the fences with Varma. And the first sign of a rapprochement? The trailer of Kashyap's That Girl In Yellow Boots has been attached to Ram Gopal Varma's much talked-about Not A Love Story releasing this Friday, and not without resistance from the normally-resilient Ramu. So far it was unthinkable that Ramu and Kashyap would ever come together in any way, least of all within the confines of one feature film. Ramu, it should be recalled, had launched Kashyap's career as a writer in Satya. The film got Kashyap instant recognition. But like many of Ramu's protégées, Kashyap chose to move out of the Varma camp soon after Satya.
