TORONTO -- Canadian broadcaster CTV Inc. said Monday that it has acquired Corner Gas, a 13-part ensemble comedy series starring comic Bret Butt about "a bunch of nobodies" frequenting a Prairies gas station. Corner Gas, produced by Regina, Saskatchewan-based Prairie Pants Prods., follows the success of Trailer Park Boys, a low-budget mockumentary series about dope-smoking, hard-talking trailer park residents that enjoys a cult status on Showcase Television, Canada's cable rerun channel. CTV is putting Corner Gas in a competitive time slot, on Thursday nights at 8 p.m., where it will go up against Survivor, which airs in simulcast on the rival Global Television Network and is the most-watched U.S. show on Canadian TV. Corner Gas also stars veteran Canadian actors Eric Peterson (Trudeau) and Janet Wright (The Perfect Storm), who play parents to Brent Leroy, a character played by Butt who owns and operates the rural gas station.

TORONTO -- Brendan Fletcher, Jessica Pare, Leslie Hope and Alice Krige are on board for the Canadian crime biopic The Nancy Eaton Story, now shooting in Calgary, Alberta. Directed by Jerry Ciccoritti (Trudeau, Chasing Cain), the film centers on the true-life story of the brutal 1985 murder of Nancy Eaton, a department store heiress, by an obsessed family friend. Pare plays the title role, and Fletcher co-stars as the killer. The two-hour telefilm, an official Canadian-British co-production produced by Bernie Zukerman, has already been sold to the CTV network in Canada. It's based on the book "A Question of Guilt: The Murder of Nancy Eaton," by William Scoular and Vivian Green. Executive producer credits go to Wendy Hill-Tout of Calgary's Voice Pictures Inc., Michael Prupas of Montreal's Muse Entertainment Enterprises and Jamie Brown of Britain's Studio Eight Productions Ltd. Shooting on the TV movie is set to wrap Dec. 20.

TORONTO -- Canadian producer Portfolio Entertainment said Tuesday it has acquired the exclusive TV rights to the life story of Kim Rossmo, the Canadian-born geographic profiler currently involved in the Beltway Sniper investigation. Rossmo, a Vancouver beat cop turned criminologist, was brought in by the FBI to help track the serial killer in the Washington area using his patented computer software system, geographic profiling, which tracks serial predators to their doorsteps. Toronto-based Portfolio will develop Rossmo's story as a telefilm, Tracking the Hunters, to air on the CTV network in Canada. Jerry Ciccoritti (Trudeau) has been hired to direct the project, with Lila Rose penning the script. No word on casting has been announced.
