When "NCIS" premiered on CBS during the fall television season of 2003 (initially as "Navy: NCIS), there was good reason to expect it would be a solid performer for the network. Created by noted TV hitmaker Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill, the military procedural entered the marketplace during a moment of extreme war hawkishness in the United States, which was taking out its 9/11 frustrations on Iraq for reasons we now know were extremely dubious. Many viewers were amped up about anything relating to Americans in uniform, and they already loved crime-of-the-week dramas, so surely this would hit one if not both sweet spots.
"NCIS" also had the good fortune to land prime Tuesday night real estate at 8 Pm, where ABC and NBC were struggling to make some direly unfunny sitcoms work (like "8 Simple Rules" and "Whoopi"). The WB had solid niche performer "Gilmore Girls," while Fox would have the...

The View has long been a ratings juggernaut when it comes to popular television shows on the air. However, the popular show recently lost in the ratings to a Fox show. Can Whoopi Goldberg save the talk show and bring it back to the top following this recent fall?
The View Has Been One Of The Top Shows Around
When it comes to popular talk shows, The View is always in the conversation. With popular personalities like Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar leading the pack, it’s a show that continues to pull in viewers. So much so that most people would not think it would ever lose steam.
One of the things that makes The View so popular is the fact that the show does not tip-toe around sensitive topics. As viewers have seen for years, the famous panel on this show is notoriously opinionated, and the ladies are...

Today, the success of Star Trek: The Next Generation seems like a foregone conclusion. However, in the 1980s, TV franchises never got a second act. Patrick Stewart was told it wouldn't last two seasons, and it might have if The Next Generation didn't introduce Guinan, played by Whoopi Goldberg. The mysterious bartender of Ten Forward lent credibility to a show that hadn't yet earned it. If not for her, Star Trek's second act may have ended before it began.
It may seem an overstatement to attribute the success of a brand like Star Trek to the long-serving host of The View. Invariably, dozens, possibly hundreds, of people were responsible for the successes and failures in those first seasons of The Next Generation. Series creator Gene Roddenberry was in declining health, and the people he brought in to help him only ended up alienating the creative minds who'd been with...

Wizard! The Mandalorian Season 3 is almost upon us. We don’t want the series to fall into the hands of the undeserving, so only real fans should read on to find out how to stream the eight-episode Star Wars installment.

Perhaps Wayne Knight's most popular performance was his recurring role as Newman, a disgruntled mailman and arch-nemesis of the titular character on the NBC sitcom "Seinfeld." Newman's mysteriously bitter feud with Jerry and string of failed get-rich-quick schemes with Kramer (Michael Richards) serve up a lot of good laughs, even more than 20 years later.
As the beloved '90s show approached its final seasons, Knight found a second gig with another NBC sitcom, "3rd Rock from the Sun," which centers on four extraterrestrials who pose as humans in the fictional city of Rutherford, Ohio. Knight plays Don Orville, an incompetent police officer who has an on-again, off-again romance with one of the aliens, Sally Solomon (Kristen Johnston). Though not as revered as "Seinfeld" -- not many shows are, to be fair -- "3rd Rock from the Sun" had a successful six season run; Johnston and John Lithgow, who plays alien Dick Solomon,...

For a movie meant to start conversations, “The Problem with Apu” follows its own advice and includes plenty of its own. In his search for answers about the origins, impact, and continued inclusion of “The Simpsons” character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Hari Kondabolu gives over much of the runtime of his new truTV documentary to his talks with South Asian performers and professionals about how Apu has affected not just their careers, but their lives.
Kondabolu’s film argues that as a character, Apu isn’t just a vehicle for promoting misguided and harmful stereotypes about South Asian people. For him, it’s a symptom of a system that never had anyone at the table to explain why the Kwik-e-Mart owner might be a caricature that would fundamentally shape understanding of the South Asian-American experience for everyone from playground bullies to well-intentioned businessmen.
This need for an honest evaluation of what Apu might represent,...

The famous Pirelli Calendar has gone through many iterations since it debuted in 1964. The calendar originally began as a means of setting the tire company apart from their competition with a project that enlisted the best artists, photographers, and models of the era. Pirelli really began to make waves, however, as their annual publication became synonymous with pinup girls and nude photo shoots, but in recent years it has made an abrupt shift towards a more feminist, inclusive 21-century vision of fashion. The brand has enlisted Annie Leibowitz to shoot the women that inspire her and Peter Lindbergh to photograph...

The hilarious Broadway play is about the two comedians' longtime alter egos: the elderly Upper West Side bachelors Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland. So check out Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy) as the title role. Now the suit turned me off at first but so long as the character is upheld I’m willing to give it a chance. But also we get Griffin Newman as Arthur, Jackie Earl Haley as The Terror, Brendan Hines as Superion, Whoopi Goldberg as, well apparently Whoopi. Jackie Earl Haley is going to be a huge draw as one of my favorite villains from the series. Creator Ben Edlund is going to be a writer for the series which instills a lot of confidence from me. Look for this new series to debut August 19th on Amazon.

We all owe Whoopi Goldberg a big thank you, because if it weren't for her, Leslie Jones might not have become the superstar she is today. The Ghostbusters star paid tribute to her longtime idol Thursday on The View, telling Whoopi tearfully how seeing her onscreen as a child had a huge impact on the way she perceived herself and her own ability to pursue a career in comedy. "When I was young, my dad always let me listen to comedy album . I always knew about comedy, I always loved comedy," she recalled. "The day that I saw Whoopi Goldberg on television, I cried so hard, because I kept looking at my daddy going, 'Oh my god. there's somebody on TV that looks like me! She looks like me! Yay! I can...

Rest easy, fans of The View: Whoopi Goldberg isn't going anywhere. (For the next year, anyway.) After months of contract negotiations and public speculation, Goldberg has announced via Twitter that she will return for the show's 20th season. "Ok Now it's official, I have re-upped for 1 year returning to @TheView 4 the 2016/2017 season," Whoopi tweeted Monday. "Will continue 2 annoy some, delight others." Although media outlets reported last month that Whoopi was locked in for the upcoming season, her tweet clarifies that the deal has only just been set in stone. The confirmation means that the "Hot Topics" panel will look pretty similar to its current...

Whoopi Goldberg, who has spent the past 30 years racking up accolades and adding hyphens to her occupation, is 60 today. Sometimes I think people forget some of her more extraordinary accomplishments, even they know her as the only African-American woman to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Here are some of the most essential Whoopi moments. The classic: "You in danger, girl." In this short burst of cautionary sass, Whoopi turned the hokey caper "Ghost" into a lovable phenomenon. The scene where she hands a check for $4 million to unsuspecting nuns is a gem too. She wasn't getting the roles she wanted, so she wrote a dynamite one for herself. Whoopi made a name for herself on Broadway, and Bette Midler and Mike Nichols were among the first to notice. She made Comic Relief edgy. (Nsfw) I forget sometimes that Lorena Bobbitt was such a shocking topic. I also forgot...

The View just began its 19th season and already it's off to an awkward start! There are some new and some old faces joining Whoopi Goldberg at the table, including Candace Cameron Bure, Joy Behar and Michelle Collins. But there's also something very different about the table: the mugs. "Well, hell guys it's nice to be back," Whoopi began Tuesday morning's show. "I do think though that cups would be nice." Confused, Behar asked Whoopi what was wrong because there were obviously coffee cups on the table. "They're cups, but where are the pictures of the faces?" asked Whoopi in response. "We used to have faces because people stuck...
