Warner Bros. unveiled a first look at Maggie Gyllenhaal's upcoming The Bride during their CinemaCon presentation. The forthcoming feature will center on the bloody romance between Christian Bale's Frankenstein and Jessie Buckley's Bride. In the footage shown (via Variety), which is not available to the public, Buckley's character is seen falling down a staircase. She requires surgery, but her recovery has very little to do with her own well-being. She is being crafted as a companion to Bale's monster. They both seem to relish the union, as Frankenstein is heard saying "'Till death do us part," with Buckley adding: "There is nothing left to do now but live." The film's tagline? "Here comes the mother f---ing bride."
During the presentation, Gyllenhaal appeared alongside Buckley, who called the director's take on the love story between Frankenstein and The Bride "the punkest love that's ever existed," before elaborating:...

John Oliver kicked off Last Week Tonight with an extended segment on the natural disasters that have hit the eastern coast of the United States in recent weeks amid hurricane season.
Throughout the introductory bit, Oliver joshed about everything and everyone from Dancing With the Stars to president Joe Biden, with a number of minutes dedicated to Southern breakfast food joint Waffle House, the Index of which serves as an unofficial but much relied-upon metric by Fema categorizing the severity of extreme weather storms.
First off, he played a clip of Alfonso Ribeiro introducing a number set to Scorpions’ classic “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” a line the host delivered somberly as he said the choice was made “weeks in advance” of Hurricane Milton’s path toward Florida.
“Yeah, that’s not great,” Oliver said. “While I’m sure the song was decided weeks in advance, it’s also the...

The red envelope is return to sender. On Tuesday, Netflix boss Ted Sarandos revealed the company’s DVD-by-mail business will shutter in September after 25 years.
“Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members but as the business continues to shrink that’s going to become increasingly difficult. So we want to go out on a high, and will be shipping our final discs on September 29, 2023,” Sarandos said in a statement posted by Netflix.
“Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home — and they paved the way for the shift to streaming,” he added. “From the beginning, our members loved the choice and control that direct-to-consumer entertainment offered: the wide variety of the titles and the ability to binge-watch entire series. DVDs also led to our first foray into original programming — with Red Envelope Entertainment titles including ‘Sherrybaby’ and ‘Zach...

Netflix DVDs are going the way of Blockbuster. The company’s DVD rental business, formerly its main stream of revenue, will end this fall, with the final DVDs being shipped out September 29.
The news was announced Tuesday via a letter posted on Netflix’s newsroom, signed by the company’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos. In his letter, Sarandos attributed the decision to shrinking demand for DVDs but credited the company’s mail-order service for paving the way to its eventual streaming empire.

Founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, Netflix changed the game when they started shipping out DVD rentals to subscribers, and they later changed the game again when they transitioned into a video streaming service in 2007. Believe it or not, Netflix has still been shipping out DVDs in red envelopes to this day, but all things eventually come to an end.
Netflix has announced today that the Netflix DVD era is over. After 25 years, Netflix has decided to wind down their physical media branch, which had been set up at DVD.com.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is calling on the federal government to “do its job” on gun safety after two mass shootings in his state in the span of just three days.
“This is on everybody, we’ve chosen this,” he told CNN on Tuesday. “This is our decision to live in these conditions. It doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world. So we’ve chosen this, we’ve accepted this.”
At least 11 people are dead and nine others are injured following a shooting on Saturday at a dance club in Monterey Park, California, during a Lunar New Year’s Eve celebration. In addition, seven people were killed in two shootings in Moon Bay on Monday, including four at a mushroom farm where the suspect was an employee and three at a trucking facility located about two miles away.

Following Saturday’s shooting in Monterey Park, California, in which 10 people were killed and 10 more were wounded, “Morning Joe” co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough led a segment Monday breaking down the continued and historic gun violence in the United States.
Introducing the segment, Brzezinski broke mass shootings down by the numbers. In 2023, there have been 33 mass shootings. Noting that a mass shooting is defined by having at least four people injured or killed, Brzezinski added that there were 648 cases in 2022, doubling the number since 2018.
Saturday’s mass shooting in Monterey Park was the deadliest since the horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May 2022. In all, citing Pew Research, Brzezinski concluded that gun deaths have spiked massively in recent years and have seen a 49 increase in the last five years and a 75 increase in the last 10.

Tamron Hall came out in defense of her interview with disqualified “Drag Race” contestant and admitted sexual predator Sherry Pie (real name Joey Gugliemelli) on Tuesday, telling her audience that the segment should not be interpreted as promoting the disgraced drag queen.
“I’ve been a reporter for 30 years, and I’ve conducted and watched interviews with people who have done bad things. I’ve interviewed rapists, I’ve interviewed murderers … it’s not giving away your platform; it’s called an interview. And people who do bad things are interviewed,” Hall said, responding to former “Drag Race” contestants, among others, who said that hosting Gugliemelli on her show amounted to elevating a perpetrator over his victims.
Gugliemelli competed on Season 12 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” as Sherry Pie, but was disqualified from the VH1 competition after multiple men publicly accused him of posing as a casting director online to coerce them into sexually compromising positions.

Following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, “Some Kind of Heaven,” a fascinating documentary about the largest retirement community in central Florida, is set for release in early 2021 courtesy of Magnolia Pictures. Making his feature directorial debut, Lance Oppenheim follows four residents of The Villages, known as the “Disneyland for Retirees,” as they seek new purpose, search for love and navigate mental deterioration within the confines of a palm tree-lined fantasy land.
While most of “the Villagers” seem to revel in the daily activities available to them, Barbara, a no-nonsense widow from Boston, remains skeptical and inserts a jolt of humor as she rolls her eyes in a tambourine class. She seems flabbergasted by the joy others exude from such menial hobbies, but as her story continues, Barbara’s demeanor transforms from hopeless to optimistic after she makes a connection with a local golf cart salesman.

Brian Koppelman and David Levien, series co-creators and showrunners, join the Variety After Show, presented by National Geographic, to break down the season premiere and offer some insights about the rest of the season ahead. The opener, “The New Decas,” was penned by Koppelman and Levien and directed by Matthew McLoota.
In the Q&a with Variety business editor Cynthia Littleton, Koppelman notes that the challenge of steering a new season is always to take the characters to new places while continuing the overarching storylines.

Exclusive: Sugar23 and Short of The Week have teamed up to launch the online charitable film series “Shelter Shorts” which will support World Central Kitchen’s Covid-19 relief efforts.
The initiative, which starts today, features short films by filmmakers shot inside their homes. Because of this, they tested their creativity and were limited to crew, cast, and materials available to them at their homes. Created by Some Kind of Heaven director Lance Oppenheim and filmmaker Max McGillivray, the initiative hopes that the series draws attention to Covid-19 relief efforts. Creatives from around the world are invited to participate by sharing their own work to the platform of their choice by using the hashtag #sheltershorts, and encourage donating to World Central Kitchen’s #ChefsforAmerica Covid-19 response.
“Shelter Shorts emerged from the fact that we were stuck at home and our productions were halted. We were itching to make things and find ways to help those in need,” said Gillivray and Oppenheim. “What began as an idea shared between two friends has snowballed into an exciting partnership with Sugar23 and Short of the Week. We hope this initiative will inspire anyone at home to make use of their pent-up creative energy and create art that can make a difference.”
Founder and CEO of Sugar23, Michael Sugar adds, “I’ve always believed that creativity flourishes from constraint, and being safe at home with little to no production resources poses an outstanding challenge to creatives right now who are desperate to get those juices flowing. We are thrilled to be supporting World Central Kitchen to bring some good to the world in this time of intense need and couldn’t think of better partners than Max, Lance and Short of the Week to make this happen”
“We’re proud to bring Shelter Shorts to filmmakers around the world during these difficult times,” said Jason Sondhi and Andrew Allen, Founders of Short of the Week. “Creativity is about rising to meet a challenge. In that spirit, we’re challenging our favorite film directors and the larger film community to come together and celebrate short filmmaking (while staying safe) to raise funds for those working on the front lines. We’re excited to see what you create from your shelter!”
World Central Kitchen was a non-profit founded by Chef José Andrés. The organization uses the power of food to strengthen communities through times of crisis and beyond. Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer along with Imagine Documentaries recently announced that they were working with National Geographic Documentary Films for a feature docu spotlighting Andrés and his humanitarian efforts through World Central Kitchen, which has transformed the field of disaster response to help devastated communities recover and establish resilient food systems.
World Central Kitchen’s Covid-19 Relief Efforts consists of a team of food first responders, mobilizing with the urgency of now to get meals to those who need them most. We’re activating restaurants and kitchens to feed marginalized and vulnerable communities and our brave medical professionals on the front lines, in order to make a meaningful impact in the fight to keep everyone fed, and to support the distressed restaurant industry.

Lance Oppenheim didn’t set out to make an 83-minute documentary when he started chronicling a group of senior citizens living in a retirement community in central Florida. But after 18 months and hundreds of hours of footage, he began to see the outline of his first feature-length film, “Some Kind of Heaven,” which premieres this week at the Sundance Film Festival.
“I think the movie could have been so many different things,” says Oppenheim, who is 23 and has directed six short films. “I wanted to push the movie in a certain direction, away from the more informational. I wanted to make it something that was much more about how in life’s final chapters, things aren’t resolved.”
Instead of urging him to think tidier — and perhaps more commercially — one of the film’s producers, Kathleen Lingo, supported that vision. But she doesn’t work at a movie production company or a TV network.

She made her name in a drama about sadomasochism – and broke the mould again as a porn director in The Deuce. But it’s her hotly debated new film that might prove to be her most transgressive yet
Nearly two decades ago, Maggie Gyllenhaal came crawling on her hands and knees into James Spader’s office, a memo clutched between her teeth – but it may as well have been a calling card. Gyllenhaal’s performance as Lee, the gagged and manacled office assistant/S&M sex slave in the now-notorious Secretary, set the tone for a career that has rarely lacked for daring.
In the years since, she has racked up a number of complex, even contradictory, roles: the defiant, self-absorbed ex-con in the indie film Sherrybaby; the capable, conflicted businesswoman drawn into the grubby world of arms dealing in the BBC thriller The Honourable Woman; and Eileen, the sex worker...

"I think it's best if we forget about this weekend..." A trailer has arrived for an indie film titled Furlough, which went under the working title Emergency Furlough while filming, made by director Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby). The film stars Tessa Thompson as a rookie correctional officer at a prisoner. She spends half of her time caring for her mother, played by Whoopi Goldberg, and working at the prison. She gets a chance to prove her mettle when she's tasked with accompanying a hell-raising inmate, played by Melissa Leo, on an emergency furlough to visit her dying mother, ending up on a hilarious road trip together. The cast includes Anna Paquin, Édgar Ramírez, and La La Anthony. I haven't heard about this film before, but it looks good. It's more of a dramedy than a drama, but seems to have plenty of heart driving the story. Here's the first official trailer for Laurie Collyer's Furlough,...

When Jessica Chastain condemned cinematic portrayals of women after spending 10 days as a Cannes Film Festival juror, Maggie Gyllenhaal had deja vu: She had a similar experience as a member of the Berlin International Film Festival’s jury in February. After watching 25 movies in two weeks, the actress grew frustrated.
“There were some amazing performances by women, but one of them was about this woman obsessed with her lover, and in two others, the women were mentally ill,” she said. “So I really related to what Jessica Chastain said. In my life, I think there have been very few representations of women that feel like something I can actually recognize as relating to my experience.”
Now, as a producer on both of her upcoming projects, she’s finding a new way to address that challenge.

In our ever-more-fragmented media landscape, we're seeing fewer and fewer recognizable brand-name stars for *everybody*, but we're probably getting more and more recognizable brand-name stars for *somebody*. And that means that people who, to certain individuals, are clearly stars of a certain stature are virtual unknowns to great masses, possibly to majorities. And that's even the case with culture-watching professionals. Take Britt Robertson. I didn't see many "Tomorrowland" reviews calling her an unknown or even a newcomer, thankfully, but plenty of critics are still bending over backwards to reference credits like "Dan in Real Life" or "Delivery Man" as if audiences may struggle to place her. I hear her name and I think of an actress who has been the unquestioned star of at least two network TV shows and one of the stars (if only for a for a season) of a bona fide hit. In the sphere of what I do,...

Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s Pippin Billy Boyd, Captain America squeeze Hayley Atwell, and Silent Bob’s buddy Jay aka Jason Mewes.

Year in Review. Two yummy lists each day. Here's Matthew Eng on "Entertainers of the Year"
Let’s face it: Jimmy Fallon is an okay if utterly predictable choice for Entertainment Weekly’s annual “Entertainer of the Year” title, which can occasionally become more of an honor for being widely-known and well-liked than, you know, being consistently entertaining. (Have they made a truly interesting choice since that three-year, Oscar-certified run of Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, and Denzel Washington from 2000-02?)
Rather than continue to pat the backs of those like Ben Affleck, Taylor Swift, Robert Downey, Jr., and J.K. Maggie Gyllenhaal knows a thing or seven about taking on audacious roles. Since she broke out as James Spader's submissive assistant in the 2002 film Secretary, she's played heroines in major blockbusters (The Dark Knight) and heroin addicts in indie sleepers (Sherrybaby). The Oscar nominee has also shunned the typical Hollywood-celebrity scene, instead living a quiet life in Brooklyn with her husband, actor Peter Sarsgaard, and their two daughters. For her series-television debut, she's chosen The Honorable Woman, an eight-episode SundanceTV drama about the very real, very violent, and very current troubles between Israel and Palestine.

Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon bring standout performances to working class drama Sunlight Jr. The spotlight burns red hot this fall for actress Naomi Watts thanks to luxury sets, international locations, a familiar designer wardrobe and arguably the world’s most famous haircut. I’m talking about Watts’ starring role as “the people’s princess,” Diana, the Princess of Wales, in director Oscar Hirschbiegel’s bio-drama Diana. Yet, the true spotlight role, the better movie that showcases Watts’ impressive dramatic skills takes place far away from the red carpet and unfolds on the opposite of the tracks in Florida in the couples dramaSunlight Jr. Watts joins writer/director Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby), and Matt Dillon in a grounded and heartfelt blue-collar story about Melissa and Richie, a working poor Florida couple expecting their first child while experiencing financial difficulties. Watts is something of an expert at melodramas thanks to her roles...

To orient you to a filmmaker who's been away for far too long: If Wes Anderson’s central preoccupation is tightly controlled diorama-like compositions, Tim Burton’s obsession is dark, kooky misfits, and Sofia Coppola’s fixation is alienated teenagers soundtracked to exquisite pop songs, then Laurie Collyer’s main absorption is the forgotten underclass and their perils. The filmmaker behind “Sherrybaby” (and the gripping social documentary “Nuyorican Dream”), Collyer hasn’t made a movie since 2006, but her latest, “Sunlight Jr.,” could easily act as the third in a trilogy about the impoverished, the destitute and the depressed. And severely depressed, “Sunlight Jr.” is. So much so that it may be too hard to watch for some viewers. Set in the indigent, trailer-park trash areas of Southern Florida, Collyer’s latest writer/directorial effort centers on a uneducated, penniless couple struggling to get by on minimum wage. Their daily struggle...

Bleak House: Collyer Returns to the Slipping Down Life
After her fantastic 2006 directorial debut, Sherrybaby, director Laurie Collyer returns with a sophomore feature, Sunlight Jr., which sees a return to similar themes of downtrodden events in the lives of the economically disadvantaged, as crafted around a strong central female vantage point. As such, it also belongs to a certain subset of indie cinema featuring A list beauties made plain (or as plain as one can try to make them) in working class roles with lives dictated by the trap of minimum wage. Here we have Naomi Watts in another sterling performance in a role that’s the seeming antithesis to her stint as Princess Di in the anticipated biopic that drops next month. But the highest praise here should be reserved for Collyer, once again proving she’s adept at capturing a believable portrait of people living day by...

For depictions of American poverty, there's a fine line between empathy and exploitation. Sunlight Jr. repeatedly tiptoes on, around, and over that threshold, ultimately coming off as the socially conscious drama it sets out to be thanks to a roster of lived-in, relatable performances. Like her last film, 2006's underseen Sherrybaby, Laurie Collyer's newest shines a light on the fiscally downtrodden by way of a struggling working woman, Melissa (Naomi Watts), a Florida gas station cashier who also supports her wheelchair-bound boyfriend, Richie (Matt Dillon). On any given day, she narrowly fends off a sexually harassing manager, a stalker ex-boyfriend (Norman Reedus), an alcoholic mother (Tess Harper) who herself scrapes by as a foster parent of 11 small children, ...

Plot: Melissa and Richie are a couple trying to survive during hard times in a small town. She works miserable hours at a mini-market and he is a paraplegic who attempts to support her emotionally when he is able. All of it becomes too much to bear when job loss and unexpected pregnancy finds its way into their lives. Review: There is a bleak and disheartening world created in the new film Sunlight Jr. starring Matt Dillon and Naomi Watts. Writer/director Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby) gives...

Currently in theaters portraying royalty in "Diana," the upcoming indie "Sunlight Jr." is a reminder of the range Naomi Watts can deliver. Here in a completely different role, she sheds designer fashion and opulence for discount chain clothes and a grittier tale about two people just trying to make it to the next day. Co-starring Matt Dillon and written and directed by Laurie Collyer ("Sherrybaby"), the story follows Melissa and Ray, a devoted but permanently down-on-their-luck couple struggling to make ends meet and pay the bill for the motel room they live in. And even the good news of Melissa's pregnancy brings with it the knowledge that they may not have the resources to care for a child. It's tough material, but there are moments of hope too, and in this exclusive clip we share one of the lighter times between Melissa and Ray. Featuring a score from Dinosaur Jr. frontman J. Mascis,...

With Diana premiering to less-than stellar reviews in the UK, it’s perhaps kindest for us to focus on another Naomi Watts project hitting theaters just two weeks after its release in the United States – smooth move, Watts. In the Laurie Collyer (Sherrybaby) drama Sunlight Jr., Watts plays a convenience store clerk working tirelessly to support herself and her disabled partner (Matt Dillon). When she becomes pregnant, their joy is clouded by the realization that they barely have enough money to take care of themselves. Add the sudden appearance of her stalker ex-boyfriend (Norman Reedus), and everything has gone to hell. The difference between this trailer and Diana (that makes all the difference) is that you get taken in by Watts’ problems and emotional breakdown. Her story seems all too real and miserable. However, our own Caitlin Hughes reviewed the film at Tribeca and wasn’t too convinced, saying that the depiction of the lower class was...
