Anette Ostrø’s debut feature-length film “The Golden Swan” took the seasoned filmmaker, who has been directing documentaries for television for decades, nearly 30 years before she was ready to make it.
The film, which was first pitched at IDFA, tells the story of Ostrø’s brother Hans Christian, a Norwegian actor who was abducted and murdered by a terrorist group during a trip to India in 1995. Now in post-production, the doc was one of five films presented this week as part of the Norwegian showcase at Visions du Réel’s industry program. Variety caught up with Ostrø and her producer Beathe Hofseth in VdR’s host town of Nyon, Switzerland.
Hans Christian and five other tourists — from Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. — were abducted in Kashmir in July 1995. The kidnapping made headlines around the world at the time. Five weeks later, Hans Christian’s beheaded body was discovered.

After more than a decade of constant updates, Digital Extremes brought one of the biggest updates in Warframe. The 1999 update was announced at The Game Awards 2024 and released on December 13, 2024. The update has been so successful that the developers are already using it to move to the next big update.
For such an old game, its doing really well still. | Image Credit: Digital Extremes
The developers at Digital Extremes were initially unsure at how the playerbase would receive the 1999 update. But in hindsight, they shouldn’t have worried because the update did the job perfectly. We got the fresh new content but it also didn’t take away from the essence of Warframe. And with the Techrot Encore update coming out soon, we hope to see more of it.

The iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced more ups and downs in recent years than ever before. A large part of the ups revlves around the inclusion of MCU TV series made exclusively for Disney Plus, but those shows are also part of the reason for the downs, too. The truth is that, ever since Marvel Studios launched the Multiverse Saga, fans have been critical of the franchise's overexposure, with many feeling that the increase in quantity of titles has resulted in a decrease in quality.
And yet, the TV side of the MCU continued to produce gems, showcasing that the cinematic titan was capable of telling stories on the small screen too. Stories that spotlight underrated MCU characters who didn't often get the spotlight that they need from the movies, or new characters important to the future of the franchise. Smallville originally planned to include a female-led Justice League episode in the series' final season. One of the writers even breaks down who would have made up the team. Smallville debuted in October 2001 on The WB and reimagined the Superman mythology for the 21st century. The series ran for ten seasons, transitioning from The WB to The CW, and featured many other DC characters, including Green Arrow, Aquaman, Cyborg, and many more. Season 6 introduced the show's version of The Justice League, and it appeared the series planned to feature an all-female version of the super team in its final season.

Even the superhero movies of the MCU, the Dcu, and beyond sometimes fail at the box office, and it isn't always particularly surprising. The superhero genre has consistently proven itself one of the most profitable in the film industry, particularly with the movies of the MCU repeatedly breaking box office records since the franchise’s inception. However, there have also been times that movies adapted from the stories of comic book heroes haven’t fared quite so well in a financial sense.
Particularly in the days before the MCU’s movie timeline began, the superhero genre was something of a risk. There have been many superhero movies that failed to break even at the box office, establishing themselves a reputation as noteworthy flops. In fact, some of these flops proved completely unsurprising, as many had foreseen their box office failure ahead of their release. With that in mind, here are...

Of all the new additions to Warframe in the 1999 update, understanding the romance feature and how it works is crucial. Warframe has been a long-running game, and though it started slowly, it has grown over the last decade to be one of the most popular MMOs. Many of these changes, along with all the promises of 1999, have made 2024 a great time to get back into Warframe.
Warframe 1999's new content takes the player back to when the first Protoframes were around. Once there, the Tenno learns about how the mysterious "Man in the Wall" has also traveled back to manipulate time to his own ending. This plot point seems like the beginning of how Warframe begins to counteract this being who has been behind the majority of the game's major events. Megan Fox's divisive 2024 sci-fi thriller with a 48% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes finds streaming success on Netflix. Fox’s starring role in Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise-starter rocketed her to stardom. She later appeared in the sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, reuniting her with a director she would later accuse of dictatorial on-set behavior.
Fox followed up her Transformers double-down by exploring other roles in genre films. She had a cult hit with Jennifer’s Body, from Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody. Josh Brolin was her co-star in the bomb comic book supernatural Western Jonah Hex. Fox then joined another franchise for a pair of films, playing April O’Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. In recent years, Fox has undergone an action-star makeover, earning herself a spot alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in Expendables 4.

While Dungeons & Dragons can be played entirely without maps or character tokens, taking a "theater of the mind" approach, the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide does include rules for how to play with a map and grid. For many players, especially those who run games online, this is probably the approach they are used to. A map divided into five-foot by five-foot squares allows player characters to position themselves opposite their foes and get a more consistent visualization of the battlefield.
A square grid is not the only type that players use, however, and it's not even the only type of map with official rules in the Dmg. There are also explanations of how to use hex-style grids or even how to use maps without any kind of grid overlay. Any one of these approaches can work, but how does a party know which will work best for them?

Anything can happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We've said it plenty throughout the years, but the likelihood of anything happening has increased tenfold due to the limitless possibilities of the franchise's ongoing Multiverse Saga. And we do mean limitless, for the franchise has managed to find a way to bring in characters from before its own existence, merging worlds and crossing characters over to showcase the extent of the possibilities within the universes they encounter.
One thing that the MCU has always been able to do is bring some of the biggest and most beloved Marvel characters back from the dead. The seventh instalment in the long-running found footage franchise, V/H/S/Beyond, sees the series change its focus somewhat, from straight forward horror to a science fiction/horror hybrid. While it doesn’t quite follow Jason and the Leprechaun into space, most of the segments do involve aliens or other sci-fi elements.
Directed by Jay Cheel the film’s wraparound “Abduction, Adduction” begins that trend as Mitch Horowitz, host of Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction, hosts an investigation of a pair of VHS tapes allegedly found at a flea market, and said to be proof of alien visitation.
That segues into “Stork”, directed by Jordan Downey who co-wrote it with Kevin Stewart based on artwork by Oleg Vdovenko.

This week's episode of Agatha All Along, titled "Familiar By Thy Side," begins at the celebration of young William Kaplan's "Magick Mitzvah." His parents watch on proud as punch and he later celebrates becoming a man alongside his friends.
William enters a palm reader's tent and encounters Lilia Calderu. She sees that a long journey lies ahead of him, but the lights flicker when she notices his lifeline is broken in two. She puts it down to William's coming of age but after spouting another seemingly random sentence writes that familiar sigil on a small stone and places it in his jacket pocket.
An emergency alert reveals that something strange is happening with the anomaly in Westview; everyone is ordered to head home and, while the radio plays snippets of the sitcoms we saw in WandaVision, the Hex comes down...and the car William and his parents are in crashes.

According to several sources, Clint Eastwood almost played Jonah Hex in a movie based on DC Comics' popular western hero. Eastwood has frequently been fan-cast as DCs scarred bounty hunter, so it will come as a shock to many that the world-famous star may have come close to playing Jonah Hex not long after the outlaw made his comics debut.
A veteran of the Civil War with a mean streak, Jonah Hex immediately stood out from the clean-cut Western heroes seen in comics prior to his 1972 debut. He didnt shoot the guns out of the bad guys hands, and sometimes didnt even wait for them to pull their guns before blowing them away.
Hex has periodically shown up in the Dcu in some form or another ever since, including a 2010 film. Yet the plans for a Jonah Hex film stretch back to the 1970s, and may have involved the Hollywood superstar who inspired his creation.

This post contains Spoilers for Agatha All AlongDue to all the rumors surrounding the supposedly imminent return of the Scarlet Witch's son Billy Maximoff to the MCU, one has to wonder how a return is even possible in the first place. First debuting alongside his twin brother Tommy in WandaVision, Billy and his brother were the product of Wanda Maximoff's grief-based creation of the Hex, a powerful dome of chaos magic placed over the town of Westview which gave her the perfect TV life and family she always wanted. However, WandaVision's ending didn't seem to be very kind to Billy and Tommy as far as their MCU futures were concerned.
Now that Agatha All Along has begun streaming on Disney+, rumors and theories have emerged suggesting the return of Billy Maximoff in particular, especially surrounding the mysterious character in Agatha Harkness' new coven known only as "Teen" (played by Joe Locke). However,...

Since its inception, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been full of surprises. No one could have predicted the success of “Iron Man” back in 2008. Then, after the Avengers were assembled, there was no way to tell that the Guardians of the Galaxy would be the next big superhero team. Now, they’re so well known that there are two theme park attractions based on their adventures. And when it comes to “WandaVision,” the first Marvel Studios show to debut on the then-brand new streaming service Disney+, who would have thought that Agatha Harkness would be among the biggest breakout characters from the cast? Though she is steeped in Marvel history thanks to connections to the Fantastic Four and Wanda Maximoff, the powerful witch was a relatively obscure piece of the Marvel puzzle until Kathryn Hahn brought her to life in the 2021 streaming series. True Believers simply fell in love with...

The upcoming DC Universe reboot is set to include various DC Comics heroes in its shows and movies, though only a few have been confirmed. It's currently speculated that Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Josh Brolin may be joining the new Dcu, though his role is only rumored. Despite this tenuous status, there are several DC characters that are perfect for the actor.
From heroes to villains, Josh Brolin has proven that he can play a number of comic book icons. This was seen in beloved roles such as Cable and Thanos, as well as the maligned Jonah Hex movie. Given that the Dcu is a reboot with no ties to previous productions, there are all manner of good guys and bad guys for the gruff Brolin to play in the new shared universe.

“Star Trek: Picard” actor Todd Stashwick has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Vision” series, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Stashwick is reuniting with his “Star Trek” executive producer Terry Matalas, who is the showrunner for the untitled project, which will see the return of actor Paul Bettany as Vision. James Spader also recently joined the cast as supervillain Ultron.
After dying at the hands of Thanos in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War,” Vision was recreated by a grieving Wanda Maximoff’s (Elizabeth Olsen) magic. Additionally, a separate white version of Vision was rebuilt by S.W.O.R.D. after his body was recovered from Wakanda. After the two Visions battled in the “WandaVision” finale, White Vision’s memories were restored and he immediately flew off. Meanwhile, the Vision manifested by Wanda faded from existence after she chose to drop the Hex over Westview.

Michael Fassbender is a man of many villainous masks. Between his chilling performance as the artificial David in the Alien franchise and his well-known stint as a young master of magnetism in Fox's final X-Men movies, the actor revels in the cruelty of complex, tortured characters. More recently, Fassbender once again delved into a twisted psyche with his murderous role in David Fincher's The Killer, playing an unblinking assassin who can kill anything except his own humanity. Years before the actor began working with big names like Ridley Scott and Zack Snyder, however, Fassbender portrayed a more intimate antagonist with a very different set of superpowers in the 2004 British television series Hex.

To this day, video games based on movies are widely treated as kind of a joke. While many agree that there are a few exceptions to the rule, the general consensus suggests that they are largely awful cash grabs representative of another era when gamers and parents could be easily fooled into buying something if was attached to a familiar, non-gaming name. To be fair, that reputation has been forged by countless games fitting that description.
Yet, those games’ greatest sin may just be they have polluted the cultural waters for genuinely great (or at least incredibly interesting) games based on movies. Those games seem destined to be overlooked and undervalued because of their association with outside properties, which is a shame given that they should serve as guiding lights toward a better way to make these kinds of games that are far harder to find in the modern era.

Despite high expectations, some comic book movies like Jonah Hex and Aquaman 2 failed to live up to their potential. Ghost Rider and Green Lantern, with big budgets and star-studded casts, still underperformed at the box office and with critics. Even with major hype, Black Adam and Justice League proved to be some of the biggest failures in the history of comic book movies.
Despite many comic book movies in the MCU, the Dcu, and beyond appearing too big to fail, some were still unable to live up to expectations. Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
We’ve finally arrived at the first of ten 2023 Amityville titles! First up is writer/director Jack Hunter II’s Amityville Ride-Share, a ~60 minute found footage film featuring loosely interconnected (or not) clips.
In some ways, Ride-Share feels reminiscent of the ill-advised pandemic title Amityville Hex, which exclusively featured YouTube creators doing their take on a viral video challenge.
The difference between this and Hex, however, is that there appears to be a knowing wink of self-awareness to the material. And while that may be giving Hunter II and dialogue writer Dann Eudy too much credit, even if it is unintentional, the bizarre meta commentary about gimmicky, cash grab sequels makes Ride-Share more interesting in the long run.

The Marvels is repeating a risky Monica Rambeau decision from Disney+'s WandaVision. Monica debuted in WandaVision, revealing she was a Sword agent and the daughter of Captain Marvel's best friend, Maria Rambeau. In the series, the character developed powers after coming into contact with the Scarlet Witch's Hex dome, which was put in place by a grieving Wanda.
The Marvels' cast includes the return of Monica Rambeau actress Teyonah Parris, as well as Ms. Marvel's Iman Vellani and Captain Marvel star Brie Larson. The three heroes will team up in a plot that sees them change places every time they use their powers. The heroes will need to work together to figure out the reason behind their predicament and in doing so, Monica will get a chance to test the limits of the powers she acquired in Phase 4. In at least one way, her story will intersect with...

The upcoming summer film, The Flash, is resetting the DC Cinematic Universe. With it comes a whole new slate of interconnected films and television series, introducing more obscure DC characters to the public and giving classic ones another shot at onscreen glory. One of the upcoming projects in this new slate will be a series titled Lanterns, centered around the Green Lantern Corps. This effectively will give Green Lantern a chance at redemption after Ryan Reynolds' big-screen portrayal of Hal Jordan was met with critical and commercial failure.
However, 2011's Green Lantern hasn't been the only DC film to take a well-known character and do them injustice with their movie debut adaptation. In 2010, DC attempted to bring its rugged gun-slinging Western outlaw, Jonah Hex, to mainstream audiences with a movie of his own. Sadly, the film was similarly met with critical scorn and was largely ignored by moviegoers. With the new Dcu on its way,...

Josh Brolin has posed nude to emphasise a point regarding a new project he’s currently filming.
The Avengers: Endgame actor is currently shooting season 2 of TV series Outer Range, in which he plays a Wyoming rancher fighting to keep his land.
Brolin wants fans to know that the new episodes will “take things in a different direction”, and to highlight this, he posted a photo on Instagram showing him wearing no clothes whatsoever – save for a necklace and a cowboy hat.
Outer Range season two had a showrunner overhaul when creator Brian Watkins stepped down following the show’s renewal in October. Charles Murray, whose credits include Sons of Anarchy and Luke Cage, is now overseeing the show.
“Prepping for a scene for Outer Range season 2,” Brolin, 55, captioned the nude photo.
He added: “We are taking things in a different direction now. It’s a shifting world and we...
