The 2023 cyber thriller Missing tells the twisty tale of a teenager investigating her mother's disappearance using the power of the internet. The movie interrogates the ways in which personal bias can make even the most innocent things seem sinister and obscure truths that hide in plain sight. Case in point: the instant message the heroine receives halfway through the movie, telling her what really happened to her mother — sent by Missing producer Sev Ohanian.
With the rise of Covid-19, many filmmakers have tried their hand at the screenlife genre, in which the drama plays out entirely on device screens and computer monitors. Missing is one of the most ambitious examples, amounting to a mosaic of overlaid applications from a dizzying array of recognizable brands. These busy compositions enabled Sev Ohanian to sneak a major spoiler into his movie where only the most sharp-eyed fans will catch it.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is one of the most infamous found footage movies of all time because it seems chillingly real. Urban myths and legends surround The Poughkeepsie Tapes and the story of serial killer Edward Carver. Ever since its 2007 release, rumors have persisted that The Poughkeepsie Tapes are real, and director John Erick Dowdle somehow got a genuine snuff movie put into circulation. Dowdle stoked this reputation by marketing The Poughkeepsie Tapes as being based entirely on real events.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes aren't real, but they are based on true stories. The Poughkeepsie Tapes starts with a police raid on a house in Poughkeepsie, New York, where the disturbing discovery of over 800 videotapes filmed by serial killer Edward Carver. The horrifying mementos document everything from his abduction process to the post-mortem mutilation in excruciating detail. While the titular "Poughkeepsie Tapes" the movies focus on don't exist, they are incredibly brutal...

Back when Unfriended was still going by the title of Cybernatural, director Leo Gabriadze said he came onto the project because he was attracted to the story’s subject matter. Nelson Greaves’ script demonstrated how personal harassment had since changed in the digital age; in particular those younger people whose torment went beyond the classroom. The internet had not only made a bully’s reach greater but also unavoidable. And in true horror fashion, Unfriended provided an unsettling portrayal of victimhood as well as sadistic retribution from beyond the grave.
Unfriended immediately broke tradition by staying close to home as opposed to traveling to the deep, dark woods or anywhere else teens tend to go and die in horror. More unusual was the unexciting premise of these characters video-chatting all night instead of meeting in person at an ominous social event of some kind. After years of critics reproaching the...

There's something alluring about found footage movies that keep people interested. Maybe it's the way they blur the lines between reality and fiction, leaving viewers to speculate about whether they just witnessed a real murder on screen or if the effects were simply super realistic. For this reason, then it's no surprise that 2011’s Megan Is Missing found itself in the spotlight quite some time after its initial release. A found footage film that chronicles the kidnapping and murder of two young girls, Megan (Rachel Quinn) and Amy (Amber Perkins), Megan Is Missing made the rounds online as netizens showed their reactions to the movie, eventually earning it the title of the “most disturbing movie ever.” Found footage films are meant to make people believe that what they’re seeing is real, and Megan Is Missing made people do just that, given its frighteningly realistic subject matter and striking similarities to certain real-life cases.

Found footage is one of the most popular subgenres of horror. Still, while some films like The Blair With Project, Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield found great success, one entry, Megan Is Missing, was overlooked by the general public. Only the most hardcore horror fans saw it when it was released in 2011. However, during the pandemic, the movie got a second wind when it became a viral TikTok trend. Writer and director Michael Goi's film was actually filmed in 2006 at the cost of a mere $35,000, and the low-budget nature worked to its benefit. Where other found footage movies were about witches, ghosts, and monsters, Megan Is Missing is something darker because of how real it feels. It tells the story of 14-year-old Megan Stewart (Rachel Quinn) and her best friend Amy Herman (Amber Perkins) as they start talking with a boy online who isn't who he says he is. When both girls disappear,...

Every now and then, the internet becomes obsessed with a fictional movie that it believes to be real. Back in the early days of the World Wide Web, The Blair Witch Project's marketing campaign convinced everyone and their parents that three film students had indeed gone missing in rural Maryland. During the pandemic, TikTok users found themselves obsessed with the 2011 found footage horror Megan Is Missing. To many, the images shown in the movie looked way too real to be faked. Not long after that, the phenomenon repeated itself, now with the 2007 mockumentary The Poughkeepsie Tapes at its center. As is the nature of TikTok, videos in which users talk about watching the movie quickly went viral, and it soon became clear that not everyone was fully convinced it was all just a story.

Last year, director Rebekah McKendry impressed our reviewer Tyler Nichols with the horror film Glorious, which took place in a rest stop bathroom. (You can read Tyler’s 8/10 review at This Link.) Now McKendry has made another “supernatural happenings in a confined location” horror film called Elevator Game, and it’s going to be released through the Shudder streaming service very soon… just not as soon as we had previously heard. Elevator Game was once set to start streaming on August 11th, but its release date has since shifted back to September 15th. And with that date just over a month away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Elevator Game will be available for Shudder subscribers in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. It will also stream on AMC+ in some areas.

We've cracked the case: Here is where to watch Megan Is Missing online. While found footage horror movies had previously been attempted with the likes of Cannibal Holocaust, it was The Blair Witch Project that really popularized the format. One of the most controversial found footage movies to have emerged in the 2010s is Megan Is Missing. Director Michael Goi based this horror thriller on horrifying, real-life child abduction cases, with the movie centering on teenage best friends Megan and Amy. When Megan goes missing after interacting with a stranger online, Amy is determined to find out what happened, which leads to some incredibly upsetting reveals.
Goi, who frequently served as the cinematographer of American Horror Story, purposely intended Megan Is Missing to be genuinely disturbing. He wanted the film to be a warning to parents to be aware of their children's interactions online and to protect them against internet predators,...

When Megan Is Missing was released in 2011, not many people saw it. Its release by Anchor Bay Films was limited to a few screens, and at the time the controversy wasn't enough to actually make people want to see it. This didn't mean it was obscure enough to prevent its banning in New Zealand. By the standards of the time, it's pretty weird that it wasn't banned anywhere else. Yes, it is that graphic.
Almost 10 years after, a new conversation began. One fueled by TikTok users who discovered Megan Is Missing and began talking about how disturbing it was, and even challenges were created to force people to go through the horrific outcome for two teenagers who didn't see the dangers of early Internet. Its director stands by his posture of making the film as a cautionary tale for teenagers and parents.

While Modern Family wasn’t usually the most experimental sitcom, the show did feature one unique television history first. Modern Family was not, for the most part, one of the more ambitious sitcoms of the '00s. While Community was concerned with subverting television tropes in a meta, self-referential way and Arrested Development was too ambitiously layered to gain mainstream appreciation, Modern Family was content to take the tried-and-tested mockumentary format and apply it to the even more reliable family sitcom sub-genre, creating a show that felt contemporary while also hewing close to television traditions.
For most of its runtime, Modern Family cared about Haley’s romances, Alex’s professional ambitions, Cam and Mitchell’s arguments, and Phil’s latest embarrassing misadventure more than any attempts at experimentation or meta-humor. This made the series a success as Modern Family provided warm, character-based comedy in an era when sitcoms were starting to experiment with weirder,...

Thanks to the runaway success of The Blair Witch Project in 1999, found footage movies quickly became the hottest thing in horror. By relying on camcorders, surveillance footage, and other unlikely camera sources, filmmakers could not only add some verisimilitude to their stories but could also do it on the cheap. But just as quickly, found footage became the most hated subgenre, as fans and critics decried its rigid constraints, laughing at the ridiculous ways characters justified recording when they should be running.
Just as the subgenre died, a new and more relevant approach emerged: desktop movies taking place entirely on computer screens, using webcams, streaming video, and recordings to tell their stories. Not only do desktop movies offer more variety in visual style, but they also better reflect our actual lives, as we spend a lot of time staring at computer and phone screens.

Warning: Spoilers for The Simpsons season 34, episode 12.
While The Simpsons have been around for an incredible 34 seasons, the series still found another new way to break TV rules via sitcom storytelling. While The Simpsons is not as critically acclaimed as the series was at the height of its popularity, the creators of the series are not using the show’s advancing age as an excuse to forego experimental, inventive writing. The plots of The Simpsons season 34 have been surprisingly unusual so far, and the series has shown a commitment to prioritizing clever storytelling tricks to keep the show fresh.
For example, The Simpsons season 34, episode 12, “My Life As A Vlog,” is the show’s first screenlife episode (and one of the first television episodes to use the format). This would not have been possible back in the Golden Age of The Simpsons, and proves that the series can keep up...

Epistolary storytelling has been immersing readers in fiction since the very dawn of literature. Using simulated letters, diaries and other documents to craft complex tales with shifting points of view, the format inevitably ended up attracting inventive filmmakers who realized that it could be adapted into a cinematic tool to instill terror. From The McPherson Tape to The Blair Witch Project, Found Footage movies have kept the epistolary tradition alive through their use of faux home video and other diegetic media.
However, with over four decades of Found Footage experiments out there, the genre has seen quite a bit of innovation. Personally, I think one of the most interesting off-shoots of Found Footage is the ongoing trend of Screenlife films, where the entire narrative is told within the confines of digital screens. While this curious format has only recently become popular in mainstream media, it’s actually older than most people seem to realize,...

The erratic world of VOD consumption saw a lift this week with debuts of “The New Mutants” (Disney) and “Unhinged” (Solstice), films that were the first wide releases when theaters began to reopen in August. Ninety days later, normal windows dictate that it’s time for non-premium availability. (They each rent for $5.99.)
Disney’s Marvel spin-off took the top spot at Apple TV and FandangoNow, while Russell Crowe’s stalker thriller is #1 at Google Play. Two items of note: “Mutants” shows its strength by taking the top spot at Fandango, which ranks by revenue, not transactions; that’s impressive for a standard-price title. Unlike “Mutants,” “Unhinged” had a PVOD release and now sees a revival at its lower price.
These two titles were the only ones to place on three charts. (Spectrum’s weekly chart lags behind and will likely show them next week.) “Unhinged” placed #2 and #3 elsewhere, while “Mutants” was #5 on Google.

Megan is Missing (2011)Writer/director Michael Goi’s hyper-creepy found footage/faux documentary certainly starts out innocently enough. Gratuitous F-bombs, uncomfortably situations involving teenagers, kids vomiting on party-going lesbians — you know, typical unrated horror movie stuff. And then, about halfway through the film, Goi throws a curve ball, one that’s forever ingrained itself into my memory. It’s a genuinely nasty image, and it’s sure to make even the hardest of genre vets cringe. If these unforgettable moments weren’t bad enough, there’s the last 20 minutes, a sinister descent into exploitation that borderlines on overkill. Of course, “Megan is Missing” isn’t interested in saving your kids from sadistic Internet predators. All the movie really wants to do is shock and horrify the audience, though it tries its best to hide behind the supposed message to justify its content. Nice try. “Megan is Missing” is disturbing, but that’s about it.

I'd like to start this out by saying I'm not the biggest fan of 'Found Footage" films. With that being said, I have seen quite a few, mostly the more well known, or one's mentioned on the Bid,such as 'Megan Is Missing'. While not the biggest fan, it's always nice to see it done right. I am on the other hand, a huge fan of psychological movies, such as 'Bug', and 'May', and will sit and re-watch one until I think I fully understand it. 'Skew' is b…...

Told “found footage” style through a series of webcam conversations and footage from a digital camcorder, the lives of Megan and Amy, two teenage girls who are best friends, are documented in the days leading up to both of their disappearances. When Amy’s camcorder is discovered in a park trash can, the viewer witnesses their fates.
As equally thought provoking as it is heart-wrenching and brutal, Megan is Missing, should immediately become required viewing for every parent of every teenager who spends even the most modest amount of time on social networking sites such as Facebook; the film is supposedly based on true events. It begins innocently enough with a front row peek into the lives of the two teenage girls. Through their playful videotaping and webcam conversations, it becomes obvious that these are two very typical teenagers. Megan is the more popular,...

This is the time of year every movie lover worth his salt pops out their annual list of “best horror films” and such. I decided to put a twist on the list this year by offering up a smattering of films that will make any parent cower in the corner. Thankfully, this is not inspired by my own domestic plight. For reasons beyond my comprehension, my husband and I have managed to spawn two well-adjusted and happy daughters. I assure you, it is sheer luck, not inherent parenting skill that has afforded me this luxury. To ask what instigated such a list would be a fair question. I have been deeply traumatized by a book I am reading: We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. The book tells the tale of a mom whose only son grew up and committed a Columbine-like massacre. I was drawn to the...
