In an industry designed to give a creative elite most of the "best" opportunities, Killing Eve is actively trying something different.
It's not uncommon in this pop culture day and age for a woman-centric show to market around its on-screen feminist ideals... as it should. But it's much rarer for female-led shows to put their money where their mouth is behind the scenes, not only with women in positions of creative authority, but in systems that actively support and foster the promotion of new talent in those highest of creative roles.
This is the rare case with Killing Eve, which has intentionally had a different woman showrunner for each season. Emmy-winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge created the show and served as its head writer in Season 1 before passing the baton to Emerald Fennell in Season 2, who then passed it on to Suzanne Heathcote for Season 3, which will premiere in April.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
10 Cloverfield Lane (Dan Trachtenberg)
Forget the Cloverfield connection. The actors who were in this film didn’t even know what the title was until moments before the first trailer dropped. Producer J.J. Abrams used that branding as part of the wrapping for its promotional mystery box, but the movie stands perfectly alone from 2008’s found-footage monster picture. Hell, 10 Cloverfield Lane perhaps doesn’t even take place within the same...

It’s the conspiracies you don’t see that are the most frightening ones, and the presence of invisible enemies imbues the Slovenian thriller “Nightlife” (“Nocno zivljenje”) with a constant sense of dread. Director Damjan Kozole (“A Call Girl,” “Spare Parts”) doesn’t quite deliver the heft of similar films that have emerged from the recent Romanian New Wave — “The Death of Mr. Lazarescu” and “Police, Adjective” both came to mind as I was watching — but he and editors Jurij Moskon and Ivo Trajkov keep the storytelling suspenseful. Criminal lawyer Milan (Jernej Sugman) has just succeeded in getting his client released.

The first international trailer for the female-centric actioner, Everly, landed late last year and promised a helluva blood-soaked caper. With that memorable teaser still in mind, it seemed impossible for any future previews to tweak the footage in an even more enticing way. That, however, is exactly the case with this latest U.S. trailer that made its way online earlier today.
To catch up those who aren’t familiar with the movie, Salma Hayek plays Everly, a prostitute in the crosshairs of her dangerous Yakuza boss. After a certain event causes her superior, Taiko, to put a $50,000 bounty on her head for whoever can kill her, she must do whatever it takes to survive. From low-life drug dealers to highly-skilled assassins, the trapped woman becomes a target for anyone in the vicinity who’s keen to cash in.

Her early forays into the work of mid-90s Robert Rodriguez movies put Salma Hayek firmly on the Hollywood map. From her capable and fiery sidekick in Desperado right through to her voluptuous blood-sucking hell fiend in From Dusk Till Dawn, her inner badass has been teased for the best part of twenty years. Always relegated to the supporting roles previously, the actress now steps up to the plate to commandeer her own actioner in Joe Lynch’s Everly.
Lynch’s prior exploit - Knights Of Badassdom – failed to incur the warm reception it desired, but by the looks of it, the filmmaker isn’t dwelling on the past. In his upcoming revenge flick, Hayek plays hooker-turned-badass, Everly. Going up against her wiseguy boss by ratting him out to the police, he soon sets a price on her head that everyone in town is keen to snag. Everly’s fight...

"I know I'm gonna die tonight." If Liam Neeson can revamp his career as an aging action star, then why can't Salma Hayek do the same? Of course, the actress is only 48 years old, which makes her 14 years younger than Neeson, but you don't normally see actresses going all out like this at her age. But that's what makes this first international trailer for Everly from director Joe Lynch so damn cool. Well, there's also some killer action sequences all set within the confines of a single apartment, so that's a big selling point. At the very least, this looks purely entertaining, like Kill Bill meets The Raid, so count me in. Watch below! Here's the international trailer for Joe Lynch's Everly from YouTube: Everly is directed by Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdom) and written by first-time scribe Yale Hannon. ★★★★☆ Slovenia may not be renowned for its film industry, but with Damjan Kazole's modern day tale of prostitution and social alienation A Call Girl (Slovenian Girl, 2009), it perhaps should be. This bleak look at the state of contemporary Slovenian society offers up a mesmerising performance by Nina Ivanisin as Aleksandra, a young language student in Ljubljana. Aleksandra turns to prostitution only to be swept away into a world of crime, where she desperately attempts to hold her life together after a client dies from an overdose of Viagra.

Another week, another Monday. So it’s time for the rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s another packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, May 14th 2012.
Pick(S) Of The Week
The Sitter (DVD/Blu-ray)
When the world’s most irresponsible babysitter takes three of the world’s worst kids on an unforgettable overnight adventure through the streets of New York City, it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to make it home in one piece. Starring Jonah Hill (Knocked Up, Get Him To The Greek) and Sam Rockwell (Moon & The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), The Sitter is a new level of twisted and debauched hilarity from the director of Pineapple Express, David Gordon Green.

A thirtysomething finds his life spiral out of control after his sister moves into his apartment.
A call girl stands by a bedside table and begins removing her undergarments. "Slowly," insists Brandon (Michael Fassbender), as he takes in every detail from the bed.
This scene, coming near the beginning of Steve McQueen's Shame, certainly advertises the film's focus on Brandon's hyperactive sex life. He will be repeatedly seen having sexual encounters, presented economically but nonetheless explicitly, with strangers, prostitutes and bar pickups, or else just masturbating to...

Rating (out of 5): ***
Can you learn much about a particular society from watching a narrative film featuring a few characters from that society? My companion and I argued this point after watching A Call Girl, a Slovenian film from Damjan Kozole making its DVD debut this week and deals with the life of a college student/call girl, her family, friends, boyfriend, teacher and -- most frighteningly – two pimps who want her in their service. (Slovenia by the way, is the tiny country bordered by Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Austria and the Adriatic Sea, whose history, as is true of many eastern European countries, particularly in the area of the Balkans, is full of competing cultures, wars, border disputes and uneasy truces.)...

"Being Michael Madsen" (2010)

While not as distinguished or meta as "Being John Malkovich," expect this mockumentary about the "Reservoir Dogs" star to be equally surreal as Madsen recruits sister Virginia and "Kill Bill" co-stars Daryl Hannah and the late David Carradine to co-star in this film that sees him accused of murder. Rather than sit idly by, Madsen turns the table on the paparazzi photographer fueling the allegations by hiring a trio of filmmakers to follow his every move.
