My friend Robin Browne, who has died aged 82, was a cinematographer specialising in aerial photography and special effects. His was not a name in lights, but he consistently excelled without the razzmatazz of Hollywood. I doubt there is anyone who has seen one of his films and not marvelled at the skills and dangers involved.

He started out as a clapper boy in the late 1950s, and worked on dozens of distinguished films over the next five decades, as camera assistant, operator and as director of photography leading specialist units. A few titles give a flavour: Battle of Britain (1969); Catch 22 (1970); the television series The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972-74), on which he was camera operator for all 52 episodes; three Bond movies in the 1970s; A Bridge Too Far (1977); Krull (1983); A Passage to India (1984); The Jewel of the Nile (1985); King Kong Lives (1986); Gorillas in the Mist (1988); and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009).

Lynyrd Skynyrd are celebrating their 50th anniversary with a new box set titled Fyfty, which arrives October 13th.

The collection will be available as a 4-cd box set and digitally, culling dozens of tracks to form a career-spanning audio chronology of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s recorded output.

Disc 1 opens with the original Muscle Shoals version of “Comin’ Home” before presenting the some of the band’s most well-known recordings for McA — “Tuesday’s Gone,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Gimme Back My Bullets,” to name a few — in linear fashion.

Other notable compositions are presented in live form, including a previously unreleased performance of “Free Bird” and a poignant rendition of “Gimme Three Steps,” which was recorded at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 13th of last year — guitarist Gary Rossington’s final Lynyrd Skynyrd show before his passing in March of this year.

Actresses Kimberly Elise and Peppermint have signed with Buchwald for representation.

Elise, who made her film debut in F. Gary Grey’s “Set It Off” and starred as Denver in Jonathan Demme’s “Beloved,” can next be seen in Fox’s upcoming sci-fi drama “Ad Astra” alongside Brad Pitt, Ruth Negga, Tommy Lee Jones, and Donald Sutherland. Elise has also had roles in “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “For Colored Girls,” “Dope,” “Almost Christmas,” and the 2018 remake of “Death Wish.” She’s earned 10 NAACP award nominations and won four, for her roles in “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” “For Colored Girls,” TV movie “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” and TV series “Close to Home.”

In addition to her acting career, Elise runs her own natural beauty company, “Kimberly Elise Natural Living,” which she launched in 2014. She is also the CEO of Jubilee Productions.

Standing in line at the grocery store yesterday (following proper grocery story etiquette), I noticed among the Redbox selections was a movie called Ticking Clock, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. And I thought, "That's where he's been!"

But when I returned home and checked iMDB, I learned that Ticking Clock was only a tiny fraction of the truth. In fact, Cuba Gooding, Jr. is probably one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood right now. Kimberly Elise had five gray hairs when she started working on Tyler Perry's film "For Colored Girls." By the time it wrapped, she had 50. Playing the tormented, abused Crystal was so emotionally wrenching, "my body thought Crystal's experiences had actually happened to me," Elise says. "Once it was over, I was sure my hair would grow back black. It didn't. The body doesn't know 'pretend.' "During shooting, Elise was so committed to becoming her character, she relinquished an offscreen lifestyle that includes vegetarianism, hiking, yoga, and meditation. She knew the loss would throw her off-center, "but that's where Crystal was: off-center," she says. "That was hard—not to be able to go home and meditate and come back down." Elise, who has never taken an acting class and doesn't view it as a detriment, says she can't articulate her technique, short of saying it's not cognitive but deeply emotional and spiritual.

"Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" collected six awards Friday night at the 41st NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles. Oscar hopefuls Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique took home best actress and best supporting actress prizes, respectively, while director Lee Daniels and screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher were also singled out for their Oscar-nominated work. "Precious," a film chronicling an abused, illiterate teen's steps towards independence and self-confidence, completed its Image Awards run with prizes for both outstanding motion picture and outstanding independent motion picture.

 

Television honors were led by TBS' "Tyler Perry's House of Payne," which was named outstanding comedy series and garnered acting prizes for lead actress Cassi Davis and supporting players Lance Gross and Keshia Knight Pulliam. The TNT original movie "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" won multiple honors including outstanding TV movie, mini-series or dramatic special and acting honors for leads Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kimberly Elise.

BFFs Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus each earn equally one spot at the Young Artist Awards this year under the television category. The first two are included for their roles in TV movie "Princess Protection Program" while Miley is in for her leading role on "Hannah Montana".

In terms of the number, it is Miranda Cosgrove and her show "iCarly" that earn the most. Beside the actress herself who is nominated for Best Performance in a TV Series by a Leading Actress, the whole cast are nominated for Outstanding Young Performers in a TV Series. Additionally, Nathan Kress and Joey Luthman land a nod each in supporting actor and recurring categories respectively.

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato are placed in competition against each other at the upcoming 31st Annual Young Artist Awards. As the Young Artist Foundation unveiled this year's nominees, it is revealed that the two Disney stars and best friends are vying for Leading or Supporting Young Actress title in a category for TV movie, mini-series or special.

Both Selena and Demi received the nomination for their performance as Carter Mason and Rosalinda respectively in "Princess Protection Program". Beside each other, they are also up against two other hopefuls, Tori Barban of "The Christmas Hope" and Patricia Raven of "Dear Harvard".

The two teen stars are not the only Disney's leading lady to get nominated for 2010 Young Artist Awards. Miley Cyrus has earned a nod for Leading Young Actress in TV series for her role on "Hannah Montana". Entertainment Industries Council, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in liaison with FX Network has announced the movies and TV series which may be honored with Prism Awards this year. In the movie category "Crazy Heart" earns three nods while in the TV category "Breaking Bad" leads also with three.

Prism Awards are given to media that address issues related to drug, alcohol, tobacco use, mental illness, bipolar disorder, depression and suicide. Beside TV shows and movies, Prism also honor music, public service project and comic or graphic novel.

Speaking of the nominees which were announced on Thursday, February 18, John Landgraf, president and Gm of FX and chairman of the Prism Awards Honorary Committee said, "This year's nominees are a remarkable mix of popular entertainment that also have a message." In its 14th year, the Prism Awards will announce the recipients on April 22 at a gala held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Entertainment Industries Council (Eic) has on Thursday, February 18, announced the nominees of the 14th Annual Prism Awards, unraveling that Maggie Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. will be competing in the same category. The "Crazy Heart" beauty and the leading man of "The Soloist" are both nominated for Performance in a Feature Film.

Both of them are vying for the title against their co-stars. Sony Pictures Entertainment earned 11 nods to lead all studios and networks nominated for the 14th annual Prism Awards, which honor TV shows and movies that address issues related to drug, alcohol and tobacco use; mental illness; bipolar disorder; depression; and suicide.

Among the top feature film nominees are "Crazy Heart," "Brothers," "Julia," "Answer Man," "A Single Man" and "The Soloist."

If you were disappointed by the lack of recognition given to Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds at the Golden Globes last week, you'll be happy to hear that the movie did get a little more love at the Screen Actor's Guild Awards on Saturday. Although most of the movie-related awards were virtually identical to the Golden Globes (and a lot of the TV ones were the same too), the Basterds did take home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. You have to admit, it's pretty hilarious to see Eli Roth up on stage accepting an award for acting! The SAG Awards may be just another award show that pales in comparison to the Oscars, but when all of the same people keep winning, it certainly tips the scales in their favour. Photo: Screen Actors Guild Tonight the Screen Actors Guild awarded the acting world for their 2009 contributions with the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Awards and Inglourious Basterds was the big winner of the night taking home the prized Best Ensemble as well as chalked up another win for Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor. The biggest surprise and only category that was really up in the air, however, was Best Actress. The question was whether the award would land in the arms of Meryl Streep or Sandra Bullock and to my personal surprise Bullock went home the recipient which means her chances of winning the Oscar have now sky rocketed.

There were no other surprises as Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for Crazy Heart and Mo'Nique won Best Supporting Actress for Precious. Bridges, Mo'Nique and Waltz have pretty much already assured themselves of an Oscar win, but that Best Actress category still remains something of a mystery.

"30 Rock's" perennial favorites Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin won for Outstanding Actors in Comedy, while the "Glee" cast took home another award for Outstanding Ensemble. 

On the film side, Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges can now safely be called Oscar front-runners, as both have taken home the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award for Lead Actor and Actress. "Inglourious Basterds" star Christoph Waltz took home yet another Supporting Actor award and the movie also won Outstanding Ensemble.

The DGA, which unveiled the small-screen nominations in eight categories last Friday, will announce the winners Jan. 30 at its 62nd annual awards ceremonies at the Century Plaza Hotel. AMC’s Mad Men received three Directors Guild of America TV nominations for drama series and HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Fox’s Glee each got a pair for comedy. The nominations included a trio of season finales in Mad Men, Curb and ABC’s Lost. In the comedy category, two shows — the pilot for ABC’s Modern Family and Glee — also received nominations.

Thomas Carter scored a nomination in the TV movie-miniseries category for TNT’s Gifted Hands — The Ben Carson Story along with Bob Balaban for Liftetime’s George O’Keefe, John Kent Harrison for CBS’s The Courageous Heart of Irene Sandler, Ross Katz for HBO’s Taking Chance and Michael Sucsy for HBO’s Grey Gardens.

"Mad Men" crew prove themselves that they work with the best. The AMC drama has just received three nominations at 2010 Directors Guild Awards. Three episodic directors, Jennifer Getzinger, Lesli Linka Glatter and Matthew Weiner, will compete against each other in Dramatic Series category.

The domination by "Mad Men" is almost being toppled by Fox's new series, "Glee", which nabs two under the category of Comedy Series. Similarly, HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" also has two candidates under Comedy, Jeff Schaffer and Larry Charles, who are both known as executive producers as well.

"Television directors play a crucial role in eliciting performance, advancing the story and establishing the look and feel in all genres of television," said DGA President Taylor Hackford. "The DGA Awards highlight the most outstanding examples of excellence in television each year, and our 41 nominees in eight categories have distinguished themselves with creative, compelling projects that entertained and informed a diverse worldwide audience.

The Directors Guild of America has revealed its nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television, Drama Series, Comedy Series, Musical Variety, Reality Programs, Daytime Serials, Children’s Programs and Commercials. Despite the shit TV directors get, TV is progressing toward a greater cinematic atmosphere and TV directors are having greater relevance in the medium. DGA President, Taylor Hackford said, “television directors play a crucial role in eliciting performance, advancing the story and establishing the look and feel in all genres of television”. There’s no better example than Lost, which feels more like an hour-long, big-budget film than a TV show. The two-part season 5 finale received a nod, and Curb Your Enthusiasim director’s Jeff Schaffer and Larry Charles were nominated for their work on the last two episodes of the fictional Seinfeld-reunion that took place on the show. While usual favorites "The Office" and "30 Rock" are conspicuously absent from the Comedy category, AMC drama "Mad Men" dominates the Drama category with three nominations. "Lost" and "In Treatment" nab the other two slots.

The Directors Guild of America on Friday announced its annual TV noms, which featured multiple mentions for "Mad Men," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Glee."

For the second time in three years, Paris Barclay landed two DGA nominations.

Barclay, a winner in 1998 for "NYPD Blue," was nominated in the drama series category for the "Gina: Week 4" episode of HBO's "In Treatment" and the comedy field for the "Wheels" episode of Fox's "Glee."

In 2008, he was nominated for "In Treatment" and Showtime comedy "Weeds."

AMC's awards powerhouse "Mad Men" was the most nominated program with three noms in the drama series category: to creator Matthew Weiner for the third-season finale, "Shut the door. Have a seat," to Jennifer Getzinger for "The Gypsy and the Hobo" episode and to Lesli Linka Glatter for the "Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency."

Six  was the magic number for NAACP Image Awards nominations announced Wednesday (Jan. 6).

ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," the film "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and the TNT's telepic "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" led with six nominations apiece.

In music, however, Jay-z and Maxwell led the way with five nods each.

The nominations were announced at a press conference that featured Tay Diggs, comedian Wanda Sykes, "Brothers Star" Michael Strahan, Tatyana Ali and Kyle and Chris Massey.

The 41st NAACP Image Awards will air live beginning at 8 p.m. Et on Friday, Feb. 26 on Fox.

Anna Kendrick has really struck the gold with her Natalie Keener role in "Up in the Air". Having won the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress and been nominated at the 67th Annual Golden Globes, the actress who plays Jessica Stanley in the "Twilight Saga" series is nominated for another prestigious awards, the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

On Thursday morning, December 17, the 24-year-old has been named among the nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. For the title, she will be competing against fellow "Up in the Air" star Vera Farmiga as well as other

nominees, Penelope Cruz of "Nine", Mo'Nique of "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" and Diane Kruger of "Inglourious Basterds".

Beside Anna Kendrick, the Screen Actors Guild also put her co-star and leading

man of the drama movie George Clooney for the Best Actor category.

Next year's list of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations puts three films and three television shows under three categories. In terms of number, critics' choice "Up in the Air" is battling it out with "Inglourious Basterds" and "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" while "30 Rock" gets heavy competition from "Dexter" and "The Closer".

For starters, Colin Firth picked up a nomination for A Single Man,and Sigourney Weaver is in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries thanks to Prayers for Bobby.

Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.

And surprisingly (at least for me) the cast of True Blood is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Causing a yawn followed by sad resignation, this year’s Screen Actors Guild Award nominations are unimaginative and a depressing indicator of what we could be seeing when the Oscar nominations are announced on February 2nd. There’s not a single nominee that surprises. Even the out-of-left-field Best Supporting Actress nomination of Diane Kruger for Inglourious Basterds feels more like a comment on the lack of good roles for actresses rather than an attempt to bring attention to an overlooked performance.

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Nominations for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning just two days after the 2010 Golden Globe Nominations giving us plenty to chew on heading into the weekend. As for surprises I can say there are really only a couple.

First off, one nod that's not really a surprise is the one that went to Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker, most likely edging out Daniel Day-Lewis for Nine. Considering we are talking about actors nominating actors this seems about right. However, Diane Kruger getting a nomination for her performance in Inglourious Basterds is a bit of a surprise, especially as she's beating out her co-star in that film Melanie Laurent, not to forget Marion Cotillard in Nine, both performances I believe are more deserving. Don't expect Oscar to follow suit with that choice.

The other nominations causing me to scratch my head...

Nominees for the 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG Awards) for both film and television categories were announced this morning. Michelle Monaghan and Chris O'Donnell announced the nominees at the Pacific Design Center's Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood.

The 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live nationally on TNT and TBS on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt, 7 p.m. Ct, and 6 p.m. Mt from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center. Finalists for the 2009 Humanitas Prize, which honors writers whose work "affirms the dignity of the human person and reveals our common humanity" include the scribes behind "Slumdog Millionaire," "Milk," "The Secret Life of Bees," "Doubt" and "Wall-E."

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.

Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.

MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
