Exclusive: Monica Dolan, the double-bafta-nominated star of Mr Bates vs the Post Office, has raised concerns that the TV industry is “plagued by fear” due to the drama funding crisis.
Dolan, who last Thursday became the first actress this decade to be nominated for two TV BAFTAs in one year, said “creativity has to come from risk, belief and bravery” as she reflected on the outsized success of local stories like ITV’s six-time BAFTA-nommed Mr Bates.
“I think really what we are plagued by is fear and unfortunately in a lot of rooms that are supposed to be creative there’s talk that we’re scared of it being this or that or don’t want it to be X, Y or Z,” she told Deadline. “But if you are starting from a place of fear then you might as well forget about it really.”

Like cicadas gestating or a wild animal migration, Hollywood dusts off the Robin Hood IP every seven years for another swing at the Sherwood bandit story. Perhaps with wealth inequality at an all-time high, the tale of the legendary crusader for the poor will strike a chord with today's audience. Although in the new film, The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Michael Sarnoski, Hood's men might be a little less merry as this promises to be a darker take on the fiscal redistributor.
According toDeadline, the film just added to its roster Bill Skarsgård of Nosferatu, Murray Bartlett (who had a star-making turn in The White Lotus) and Noah Jupe, who was also in Sarnoski's A Quiet Place. Robert Harris’ novel “Conclave,” a political papal thriller set in the Vatican as cardinals jostle and conspire to elect a new Pope, was released in September 2016, coincidentally just weeks after House Productions, which would produce the film adaptation, had been officially launched by Tessa Ross and Juliette Howell.

ITV has officially announced its drama about the U.K.’s phone-hacking scandal and investigation, a seven-part series now entitled “The Hack” and written by multi award-winner Jack Thorne.
The unveiling of the first look from “The Hack” — which shot last year — comes just a week after the hacking controversy concerning Rupert Murdoch’s U.K. tabloids reached a new peak, with his News Group Newspapers making a historic apology to Prince Harry and agreeing to pay substantial damages.
David Tennant — who himself accepted damages from Ngn over a phone-hacking claim against the now-defunct News of the World — plays Nick Davies, the investigative journalist who uncovered evidence of hacking. Toby Jones plays his former editor-in-chief at The Guardian newspaper, Alan Rusbridger, while — in a story running parallel to the hacking expose — Robert Carlyle plays former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, who led an investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan.

Matt Smith goes full bad boy in the first look at Sky’s six-part series “The Death of Bunny Munro,” based on Nick Cave’s cult novel.
In the debut image released from the series, Smith — who is playing the title character — sports only his underwear as he gets ready to light up in a laundromat. By Smith’s side is newcomer Rafael Mathé as Bunny Munro’s son, Bunny Junior.
Described as a “wild cautionary tale” and “tender portrait of a father and son,” “The Death of Bunny Munro” takes place after Bunny’s wife, Libby, dies by suicide. According to its official synopsis: “Sex-addicted door-to-door beauty product salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro finds himself saddled with a young son and only a loose concept of parenting. Together with 9-year-old Bunny Junior he embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control road trip across Southern England as the two...

The Witcher season 4 doesn't have a release date yet, which is no surprise given how the show has recast its lead role with Liam Hemsworth. Geralt of Rivia's mentor will also look different, as Vesemir's actor also won't be returning due to scheduling conflicts. But according to Netflix, the rest of The Witcher's regular cast will be returning, barring those who died during the climactic end of season 3.
The Witcher season 4 will also be bringing on several new cast members, such as fan-favorite vampire Regis, who will be played by Laurence Fishburne, as well as Danny Woodburn as Geralt's friend, the Dwarf swordsman Zoltan Chivay. With these additions, The Witcher's next outing will have a star-studded cast as the Netflix show reaches a tense point of adapting Andrzej Sapkowski's books.

“Nothing happens in a vacuum,” notes Dcs Ian St. Clair (David Morrissey) in one of several police press conferences which punctuate the return of gritty crime drama “Sherwood” to BritBox (November 14). “There is such a thing as a mood or a culture that is hard to see, hard to define. But it can grip a place.” On this occasion, it’s not the deep-seated divisions stemming from a 1980s miners’ strike that has the stranglehold, but a middle-aged matriarch hellbent on exacerbating a bitter turf war.
It’s a pivot which both justifies a second helping – most of its BAFTA-nominated predecessor’s loose ends appeared to have been tied up – and helps fill the void opened up by another naturalistic, nail-biting BBC saga. Of course, its first season already had plenty in common with Sally Wainwright’s “Happy Valley”; an instinctive grasp of its Northern England surroundings, for example, and...

The BBC has commissioned a third series of James Graham’s award winning drama Sherwood, and here are the details.
Aside perhaps from Jack Thorne, James Graham may well be the most prolific screen/playwright working today. By far his biggest runaway success is dark drama Sherwood, which recently concluded its second series on the BBC.
Showcasing a terrific ensemble cast, including David Morrissey, Lesley Manville, Robert Glenister, Lorraine Ashbourne, Claire Rushbrook and Philip Jackson, the ensemble play members of a fractured community inhabiting a small village in Nottinghamshire, as they attempt to move on from the murder of a former union activist.
The BBC has confirmed that its has recommissioned the show for a third series. It will once again be written by Graham.
Graham said “It continues to be the greatest privilege to tell stories set in and inspired by the history of my home county of Nottinghamshire.

James Graham, the creator of Sherwood, Dear England and Brexit: The Uncivil War, has urged the creation of “new universes” and greater risk taking in place of TV’s gatekeepers “falling back on tried and tested IP.”
Delivering this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival MacTaggart lecture, the prolific British scribe argued passionately for greater working class representation in the TV industry, along with criticizing commissioners’ ongoing temptation to opt for “source material, adaptations and expanded universes.”
Graham used the annual Edinburgh platform to plead for “new universes, which means – taking risks.”
He added: “New stories have to be at the heart of commissioning – scripted, non-scripted, factual, fictional … even in the most difficult climate, where the temptation, and we’re witnessing it, is to fall back on tried and tested IP.”
The industry should see “risk” as a long-term “vital” investment in the future health of the sector, Graham said, coming...

“Sherwood” writer James Graham has revealed he fought for the BBC drama to be made available in weekly episodes rather than released all at once on streaming platform iPlayer.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival on Wednesday, where Graham was delivering the annual McTaggart lecture, he revealed that the BBC’s chief content officer Charlotte Moore had included him in the conversation about how the series should be made available to viewers.
“There was of course a discussion about whether to make the entire series available on iPlayer, rather than weekly,” he explained. “I am not against that freedom of choice for an audience. A good old binge works for some shows. But I also really cherish those television experiences that stretch out, that demand we wait, so that actual, in-real-life conversations can be generated around the work. Those infamous ‘watercooler’ conversations the morning after the night before.”
