Exclusive: It was the place where American viewers were always glad they came — and now the Cheers bar is hoping to open its doors to Brits.
Deadline can reveal that Big Talk Studios, the producer behind Stephen Merchant’s BBC/Amazon series The Outlaws, is pitching a UK version of NBC’s iconic comedy. Thirty years after Cheers’ last orders, Big Talk has enlisted Simon Nye, the British writer known for Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells, to adapt the series for a UK audience. Nye will be showrunner if Cheers is greenlit.

In times of crisis, it can be easy to stand still and do nothing. This has been the choice of many Russians in light of the invasion of Ukraine, avoiding uncomfortable conversations and wanting it to simply blow over. Nonetheless, if anything is going to change at home, resistance to the regime might be crucial. With Everybody Knows, Russian Director Daria Geller – last seen on Dn with fractious relationship short Him & Her – counts the tragic cost of complacency, reducing everyone to a victim eventually. Shooting in a disused, brutalist-looking care home in Tel Aviv, her group scenes thrum with tension, warm 16mm images showing the mixture of emotions playing off idle, unspeaking rubberneckers. Featuring a new cover of Leonard Cohen’s classic song, it shows how the horrors are known by everyone, and how it can easily get worse if people refuse to speak up and make a difference, despite...

In what is likely to be considered a major poach, Sony Pictures Television has hired Mathew Justice — a seasoned U.K. industry vet and currently managing director of the ITV Studios-owned Big Talk — for the newly created role of executive vp, head of U.K. and Europe.
Reporting to Spt president of international productions Wayne Garvie, Justice will directly manage the company’s International Studio operations and European co-productions business, as well as work closely with Spt International Production’s wholly owned and joint venture production companies in the region, which include Bad Wolf (His Dark Materials, Industry), Eleven Films (Sex Education) and Left Bank Pictures (The Crown). He joins later this year.
“Joining Wayne and the team at Spt is an opportunity that dreams are made of,” said Justice. “The Spt labels are outstanding, so it is a rare honor to get to work with them and the people behind them.

Cunk on Earth is a BBC series directed by Christian Watt in which Philomena Cunk (played by Diane Morgan) asks questions which are sometimes uncomfortable, other times surrealistic and sometimes intelligent about inventions of Humanity and, how, centuries later, we have ended up the way we are today.
The screenplay has been written by Charlie Brooker among others, whom you are all familiar with (the guy from Black Mirror).
This is an interesting series that follows other batches of Cunk, which are a series that is a mix between educational series and entertainment that are ironic and atractive, above all, thanks to the presence of Diane Morgan who is just great with her British style that knows how to deliver this… irony.
If you are interested in civilization and spending a good and intelligent time in the company of this woman who has so many questions for the experts… here you have Cunk on Earth,...

Steve Coogan and Sarah Solemani are writing and co-starring in a comedy-drama about sexual politics in the wake of the #MeToo movement for Britain’s Channel 4.
Produced by Coogan’s Baby Cow Productions, Chivalry stars Coogan and Solemani as filmmakers put together by a cynical studio executive to salvage a failing movie.
Coogan plays successful producer Cameron, who is known for dating a string of young women. Solemani stars as woke writer and director Bobby, a mother of one who has tasted success with a low-budget feminist film.
The odd couple are brought closer by a creeping attraction and a feeling that they are just pawns in the studio’s agenda for a Saudi Arabian buyout.
Solemani, who starred in BBC comedy Him & Her and Bridget Jones’s Baby, said the show came about after she and Coogan had a series of “fiery debates” about sexual politics.

From the creator of Him & Her, BBC Two comedy Mum returns tonight for its second series starring Lesley Manville and Peter Mullan...
Screenwriters often say their characters are inspired by people they’ve met in real life. If that’s the case for Stefan Golaszewski, he’d better hope that none of them ever watch his shows and recognise themselves. That’s hardly a risk of course. Golaszewski’s best—and by best, I mean worst—comic creations are so lacking in self-awareness they’d never notice the similarities.
