Mel Gibson’s first movie as a director in over decade, Hacksaw Ridge had it’s world premiere, out of competition, at the Venice Film Festival, taking place on it’s long standing home of the island of Lido, last night, and, as reported by Deadline, the movie moved the audience to their feet, receiving a 10 minute standing ovation after the credits rolled. You would think this was nothing out of the ordinary, expect standing o’s are a something of a rarity for this particular festival. Six minutes in, Gibson and stars Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, Teresa Palmer, and Luke Bracey were asked to go down into the audience, where they mingled with those in attendance. Telling the true story of Desmond Doss (Garfield), the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honour, a pacifist and army medic who saved 75 fellow soldiers on Okinawa without even carrying a gun,...

Mel Gibson hasn’t stepped behind a camera since 2006’s Apocalypto, but his first directorial effort in ten years does promise to be something special, with Hacksaw Ridge telling the true story of Corporal Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), an army medic in World War II who refused to take up arms. Labeled a coward by his comrades, he ended up saving seventy five men in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of the war without firing a single bullet, earning him the honour of being the first contentious objector to receive the Us congressional Medal of Honour. This movie look nothing short of incredible, with the bulk of that resting solely at the feet of Garfield who could very well end up coming out of this with an Oscar nomination for a show stopping performance. It is also some really intriguing subject matter for Gibson to tackle, offering a refreshing twist...

Love him or hate him, Mel Gibson never makes wimpish decisions when it comes to the work. He’s handled a variety of opposing epochs, viewpoints and styles in his directorial duties. In front of the camera, he’s demonstrated a capability for comedy, drama and action. So, professionally, while his efforts may be divisive, you can’t question his unfettered commitment to film. Whether his highly-publicized private life holds any sway over your perception of him, may affect how intrigued you are by his next project – Hacksaw Ridge.

Oh EA, you really don’t help yourself do you? First you cancel a game post-development despite there being a market for it, then you absorb and liquidise a bunch of promising development companies, shoe-horn DRM into a game where it doesn’t belong, force developers to abandon their key audience by taking their franchise ‘in a different direction’, and have games edited in such a way that their quality is massively reduced. The list goes on much much longer I’m afraid, but we can probably sum up your current reputation with two small words: golden poo.
But here’s the thing: while ol’ Electronic Arts may have made a nasty habit of peeing off their consumers (and even people who aren’t their consumers come to think of it) over the last few years, it’s unfair to portray them as the Satan-worshipping Scrooge like corporation that we frequently do.

Video Gaming began in 1972 with the introduction of the instant classic Pong. Since then, the popularity and quality of video games has sky-rocketed. 40 years on and we can all but create reality. Gameplay, graphics and the entire production of games is better than ever. This is why the question stands - is this the Golden Age of video games?
Most people have their own opinion on what this age was and really it comes down to what age you are. A gamer’s age depicts which generations they have played through, and subsequently the games. [Editor's note: I've asked our team of world film correspondents to dish out their top 5 films of the year from their respective countries. Here's Marin Apostol's take on the Best in Romanian Cinema in 2010.] It was one more vintage year for Romanian films on the world cinema scene. The long-awaited film from Cristi Puiu in the Cannes' Un Certain Regard selected Aurora won over some critics (including two on our site) but those who didn;t give the film a glowing review accused the film which runs at 180 minutes of being too long. Despite this, the film has been sold to more than a dozen countries (including The Cinema Guild in the U.S.) and it will be released internationally next year, as well as domestically. Another Romanian film that received a lot of good reviews through the year has been Radu Muntean’s Tuesday, After Christmas. This was the movie that pushed La Times' Steven Zeitchik to say that, "Romanians can't make a bad film. It's, like, illegal in their country. Or at least not in their DNA." Romanians were especially proud by...

Those compiling their best of the year lists would do well to consult the roll-call of gong-winners handed out by an august band of international critics
Any perspicacious film festival-goer or festival-watcher will have noticed that one of the prizes awarded at most festivals, in addition to the Golden Palms, Golden Lions or Golden Leopards etc, is the Fipresci (Federation International de la Presse Cinematographic) – aka the international film critics' award. In principle, this should be the most prestigious and sought-after prize of all, because the juries are made up of professional film critics (usually five, each from a different country) who are paid to tell the public what is good or bad and why.
Unfortunately, the Fipresci prize does not carry with it any money but, in theory, it does help the film gain a distributor. However, on one occasion, I remember that a director, who had just won the Fipresci prize,...
