Projects from creators in Europe, Taiwan, Japan, Israel and the UK are among those to have been shortlisted as part of Series Mania Forum’s Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, which takes place next month.

An international jury of industry professionals will determine the best project among the 15 shortlisted, with the winner taking home €50,000 to help develop the series.

The shows – full details of which can be found below - were selected from 406 applications from 72 countries, including new territories such as New Zealand, The Philippines, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Uganda and Eswatini.

In 1980, outlaw horror author Jack Ketchum published one of the most gruesome and disturbing horror novels of all time. Off Season follows a group of friends vacationing at a picturesque cottage in Maine targeted by a clan of feral cannibals living deep in the woods. Offspring picks up the story ten years later as the feral family terrorizes a sleepy town. Writer/director Lucky McKee continues the story with The Woman, a harrowing film which reverses the concept of predator and prey. After a few days of teasing with the letters M and O on Aniplex-branded websites, the producer announced today that the Monogatari anime will be continuing with an adaptation of the Off Season and Monster Season light novels. Lido red carpets may be star-deprived this year, but that didn’t stop the Venice Film Festival from arranging a gorgeous constellation of new movies from supernova directors. (The full lineup is here.)

The SAG-AFTRA strike work stoppage means, of course, that competition directors like Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), David Fincher (“The Killer”), Sofia Coppola (“Priscilla”), Ava DuVernay, Saverio Costanzo (“Finalmente L’Alba”), and Michel Franco (“Memory”) will have to do the talking at press conferences and attend step-and-repeats without their actors, if they’re willing. It’s tricky for multihyphenates like Bradley Cooper, who directs and stars as Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro;” IndieWire hears he will sit this festival out.

The Venice Film Festival sails on in Italy — even with much of Hollywood at a standstill.

The annual cinema celebration hosted by La Biennale di Venezia and directed by Alberto Barbera runs from August 30 through September 9. Despite already having lost Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” from its opening night slot due to its SAG-AFTRA talent including star Zendaya being unable to accompany the world premiere due to strike work stoppage orders, Venice has plenty of movie goodness in store for its 80th edition.

Competition highlights include Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” Ava DuVernay’s “Origin,” Luc Besson’s “Dogman,” Michel Franco’s “Memory,” Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde,” and many more. Out of competition, Venice will screen new films from Harmony Korine, Richard Linklater, Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Roman Polanski, and William Friedkin.

The selection was announced by festival president Roberto Cicutto and artistic director Alberto Barbera. The SAG-AFTRA strike in the US has had a “quite modest” impact on the selection according to Barbera, who was forced to pull Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers as the opening film over the weekend due to the strike.

Stéphane Brizé is set to begin production in Brittany this month. Our friends at Cineuropa confirmed that Guillaume Canet and Alba Rohrwacher are indeed toplining a project about paths crossing once again. Titled Hors saison, Brizé co-wrote the project with Marie Drucker (Léa Drucker’s cousin) who appeared in Brizé’s 2021’s Un autre monde.

Hors saison revolves around Laurent, a well-known actor nearing fifty, and Hélène, a forty-something piano teacher. He lives in Paris, she in a small seaside town. They were in love fifteen or so years ago, then they separated. Time went by, and each of them followed their own path, wounds healed, and their anger dissipated.…...

The setting: a small resort, Les Cimes, in the Swiss Alps, a stone’s throw from the French border. The moment: the end of ski season, tourists have left, time seems to be suspended. The plot: a corpse is found, tied up, with an edelweiss in its mouth. The protagonist: Captain Sterenn Peiry (Marina Hands) leads the investigation. She still mourns her 15-year-old daughter, killed three years before in an avalanche.

So much for the beginning of “Off Season” (Hors saison), a Franco-Swiss police series, produced by Akka Films, Gaumont Television with Rts and France Télévisions, and beautifully filmed in CinémaScope by Pierre Monnard.
