Director Atlee’s “Jawan,” starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, is the highest grossing Indian film of the year with $138.6 million. With 91%, it has also become the first Indian film to surpass the 90% level critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, above Karan Johar’s “Rocky aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani” (88%) and Khan’s own “Pathaan” (83%).

Atlee apprenticed with renowned blockbuster maker S. Shankar on “Enthiran” (2010), starring Rajinikanth, and “Nanban” (2012), starring Vijay, and made his directorial debut with Fox Star Studios’ “Raja Rani” (2013).

“Jawan” began in 2019 when Atlee received a call from Khan’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment requesting a meeting and initially thought it was a prank. It took a mutual friend – producer Aalif Surti (“Soorarai Pottru”) – to convince Atlee he wasn’t being pranked. Thalapathy Vijay, one of the most popular and highest paid actors in Tamil cinema, is known for his versatile roles and mass appeal. The actor, who is currently busy with his upcoming film Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is reportedly in talks with ace filmmaker Shankar for his next project after Venkat Prabhu project.

According to sources, Shankar has narrated four scripts to Vijay over the years, but none of them materialized due to various reasons. The first script was a multi-starrer with Vijay as the hero and Vikram as the villain, which was pitched in 2014. The second script was a sequel to Shankar’s blockbuster Mudhalvan, which was offered to Vijay in 2017. The third script was a 3D science fiction film, which was proposed in 2018. However, Vijay did not give his final nod for any of these scripts.

According to a tweet by Dt Next, a leading Tamil news portal, Shankar has narrated a one-liner to Vijay and the actor was happy with it. The tweet also claimed that the project will be a hard-hitting political thriller and it will be either Thalapathy 69 or Thalapathy 70.

Shankar, who is currently busy with Indian 2 and Game Changer, will start working on the full script once he wraps up his ongoing projects.
