Simon StephensÂ’ Sea Wall premiered as a stage play at the Bush Theatre in London in 2008 to universal acclaim. It transferred with equal success to the Edinburgh Festival in 2009 where it sold out, and has now been made into a film as radical as it is humane.

The play was written for acclaimed stage and film actor Andrew Scott, most recently seen playing Moriarty opposite Benedict CumberbatchÂ’s Holmes in Sherlock on BBC1, and star of IbsenÂ’s Â“Emperor and Galilean Â“ at the National Theatre.

Blessedly Short

Andrew Scott is the latest in a line of eccentric, tic-ridden actors who inspire novelty-show enthusiasm until people realize that an imitation of Tourette's is not an acting style. His Moriarty was merely silly; his Hamlet was unwatchable. Viewing his performance in Sea Wall is like walking through a swarm of midges. The piece itself is a trifle: a small tragic anecdote inflated by gaseous references to God that do not succeed in making it rise.
