The script writing is under way and the new Ryo Saeba has already been selected for the second live movie adaptation of the detective manga series ‘City Hunter’. Cheng Jiake, the acclaimed mystery writer who penned the script for the Chinese blockbuster ‘Detective Chinatown’, is working on the script for ‘City Hunter’.

Huang Xiaoming (IP Man 2, American Dreams in China) will play the role of the “one-hole shot” expert, Ryo Saeba. The movie is expected to be released in China Quarter 3 , 2018.

The story is about a private detective, Ryo Saeba, who is heavily into solving crime mysteries and seducing beautiful women.

Wong Kar Wai to direct two web series as part of the production deals.

Hong Kong filmmakers Wong Kar Wai and Peter Ho-sun Chan have both signed six-year production deals with Dong Ping’s Huanxi Media Group, which include two web series to be directed and produced by Wong Kar Wai.

The two filmmakers will become shareholders in Huanxi Media, which will be given preferential investment rights in their upcoming film and TV productions. They will also serve as members of the company’s artistic advisory committee.

Huanxi has exclusive 10-year online rights to the two web series, which mark the first time that Wong Kar Wai has produced and directed an internet project.

The first season will comprise 12 episodes, part or all of which are expected to complete production in 2017. The second series will be completed during the six-year cooperation period.

The company also has rights to invest up to 60% in two to four films directed...

Hong Kong filmmaker Peter Ho-sun Chan will produce and direct a biopic of Chinese tennis player Li Na, based on her best-selling autobiography Li Na: My Life.

Li Na, who was ranked world number two in 2014, will serve as a consultant on the project, which is scheduled to start shooting in autumn 2015 for release in 2016.

Li Na is the only Asian tennis player in history to win two Glam Slam singles titles (at the French Open 2011 and Australian Open 2014). She retired from professional tennis following a knee injury at the end of 2014.

“I am honored to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to tell my life story through a film and work with such an accomplished film director as Peter Ho-Sun Chan,” said Li Na in a statement.

Chan plans to shoot the film in locations such as Germany, France and Australia, as well as Chinese cities including Wuhan, where Li Na grew up, and Beijing...

ChinaVision Media Group, which will soon be renamed Alibaba Pictures Group, has signed production deals with Wong Kar Wai’s Block 2 Pictures, Angie Chai and Giddens Ko’s Star Ritz International Entertainment and Peter Ho-sun Chan’s We Pictures.

The deals emerged in a profit warning filed by ChinaVision on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday. ChinaVision is being rebranded as Alibaba Pictures Group, following ecommerce giant Alibaba’s acquisition of a controlling stake in the company in April.

Alibaba has also reportedly hired China Film Group vice president Zhang Qiang to head Alibaba Pictures Group. However the company has not confirmed or responded to the reports.

ChinaVision reported expected losses of $12.5m (Hk$97m) to $23m (Hk$180m) for the six months to June 30, 2014. However it added that losses were due to a lack of films released during this period, and that business was expected to pick up in the second half of the...

Hong Kong – Director Peter Chan unveiled the English title of his new film to be Dearest. The film, a drama about the search for a missing son, will be released in China on Sept. 26. Richie Mehta’s Siddharth was awarded best film at the close of the Beijing International Film Festival (Bjiff), while Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster picked up three prizes including best director.

The Grandmaster also scooped best actress for Zhang Ziyi and best cinematography for Philippe Le Sourd at the festival’s Tiantan Awards on Wednesday night. Wong Kar Wai and Zhang both won prizes for the film in the same categories at the recent Asian Film Awards in Macau.

Best actor at Beijing’s Tiantan Awards went to Guillaume Gouix for French director Sylvain Chomet’s Attila Marcel, which also won best music. Korean director Lee Joon-ik’s Hope won best supporting actress for the performance of child actor Lee Re. Alan Rickman won best supporting actor for his role in Patrice Leconte’s A Promise.

Rajkumar Hirani will be part of the 7-member Tiantan Award International Jury at the 4th edition of Beijing International Film Festival. Richie Mehta’s Siddharth is one among the fifteen films in competition for the Tiantan Award.

The Beijing International Film Festival will be held from April 16-23, 2014.

Director of three critically acclaimed features- Munna Bhai Mbbs, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots- Rajkumar Hirani is the only Indian on the jury. His film 3 Idiots, featuring Aamir Khan, was a major commercial success at the Chinese box-office. Besides, it was screened at the inaugural edition of the Beijing International Film Festival in 2011.

Headed by Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo, the international jury at the festival comprises of Spanish producer Andrés Vicente Gómez; Irish director, scriptwriter and producer Jim Sheridan; Chinese director, scriptwriter and executive producer Lu Chuan; Italian actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta; and French director, scriptwriter and producer Philippe Muyl.

Beijing-based Huayi Brothers is launching sales on Pang Ho Cheung’s romantic comedy Women Who Flirt and Mabel Cheung and Alex Law’s $12m historical drama A Tale Of Three Cities at Filmart.

Starring Huang Xiaoming (American Dreams In China) and Zhou Xun (Cloud Atlas), Women Who Flirt is currently in post-production for a tentative July release.

Zhou plays a besotted graduate who takes flirting lessons to take her friendship with a former classmate to the next level. Pang, director of Hong Kong International Film Festival opener Aberdeen, will produce the $7m film with Subi Liang.

The 33rd Hong Kong Film Awards is expected to be a hell of a show with some great films going head to head. Leading the way with nominations is The Grand Master with 14, followed by Unbeatable (Dante Lam).

There were complaints last year, that the show didn’t live up to expectations, mainly due to the fact the movie Cold Wars, won nearly every award. Best actor award see the likes of these guys going head to head, Tony Leung (The Grandmaster), Louis Koo (The White Storm) and also Anthony Wong (Ip Man: The Final Fight).

Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox has bagged six nominations at the 56th Asia-Pacific Film Festival including Best Film and Best Director.

Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui have secured nominations in Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor categories respectively.

Rajeev Ravi has been nominated in Best Cinematography category for Monsoon Shootout.

Hong Kong director Peter Chan grew up as a teenager in Thailand and went to college in America, and now he is working with Beijing film producers to tell a tale of ”American Dreams in China.” It’s not a ”Hong Kong” movie at all, and it’s not really Chan’s film, since it was produced and written by Beijingers who are a bit more interested in propaganda than pure storytelling. But that’s China today, and that’s what Chan — veteran director of ”Comrades: Almost a Love Story” and ”The Warlords” — has gotten himself into. He even gets America wrong.

Steve McQueen’s historic drama 12 Years a Slave is to open the Stockholm International Film Festival (Nov 6-17) and is nominated in the Stockholm Xxiv Competition.

Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, the drama about free black man kidnapped from his family and sold into slavery in the 1850s debuted at Telluride and has received positive reactions throughout its festival tour of Toronto, New York and London among others.

It will be released in Sweden on Dec 20 by Ab Svensk Filmindustri.

Screenwriter John Ridley, who will be present during the festival, is nominated for the Aluminum Horse in the category Best Script.

McQueen’s Hunger won Best Directorial Debut at Stockholm in 2008.

With each passing year, Tiff is becoming more and more prominent on the film festival circuit, with more and more Oscar-primed films making their debut out in Canada. And with the initial line-up announced for the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the trend is definitely continuing.

Amongst the many, many films making their presence felt out in Toronto will be Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated 12 Years a Slave, which launched a powerful first trailer earlier in the month. The film sees Chiwetel Ejiofor lead a fantastic cast, with Michael Fassbender returning to work for his Hunger / Shame director, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, and many more.

Opening the festival will be Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, alongside Daniel Brühl, Laura Linney, Anthony Mackie, and Stanley Tucci.

One thing is for certain: There will be a little something for everyone at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. On Tuesday morning, the renowned festival released 70 titles set to hit the fest.

The titles with the most buzz include the Allen Ginsberg/Jack Kerouac/William Burroughs biopic Kill Your Darlings, which premiered at Sundance; August: Osage County, starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and based on the Tony-winning play; the musical romance Can a Song Save Your Life?; and Steve McQueen’s slavery opus 12 Years a Slave, starring Chiwetel Ejofor, Michael Fassbender, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

As we hit the halfway stage in 2013, I'd like to pause for a moment and take stock of the Asian films I have seen so far this year and throw a little light on my favourites.
