Fumi Kitahara, the animation publicist who guided award-winning campaigns for DreamWorks, Aardman, Laika, Netflix, Disney and independent studios during her distinguished 30-plus years in the industry, has died. She was 56.

Kitahara died Monday in Los Angeles of complications related to her long battle with a rare blood cancer, a spokesperson for Walt Disney Animation announced.

Among the many acclaimed animated features she helped to publicize are the first three Shrek films, Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, How to Train Your Dragon, Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings, Over the Moon and The Sea Beast.

She also oversaw the awards campaigns for numerous Oscar-winning shorts, including such recent titles as The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse and War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John and Yoko.

Born on March 2, 1968, Kitahara graduated from California State University Northridge with a degree in business marketing.

Theo James was in a London park when he learned he was nominated for his first Emmy for his role as chaotic finance bro Cameron on HBO’s The White Lotus, and when the British actor got on the phone with THR, he hadn’t yet had a chance to talk to any of his co-stars — many of whom were also nominated. Overall, The White Lotus racked up 23 nominations during the July 12 announcement.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has inked a deal with U.K. theme park and resort Chessington World of Adventures Resort to bring “Jumanji” to life.

“World of Jumanji,” a £17 million (20 million) entirely new land, is set to open at Chessington in spring 2023.

It will be the first “Jumanji”-themed land on the planet.

First-look images, showing the proposed designs for the land, give fans a glimpse of a jungle-like entrance portal including a 17-meter high Jaguar Shrine. Details of the rides, attractions and experiences that will populate “World of Jumanji” are set to be unveiled in the coming months.

Filmmakers Max Lang and Daniel Snaddon are no strangers to the world of adapting the vividly illustrated children’s books of Julia Donaldson for animation. They’ve adapted “Room on the Broom,” “The Gruffalo” and “Stick Man,” and this time they’re vying for Oscar short animated film and Annie Awards consideration with another beloved story, “The Snail and the Whale.”

Produced in a stop-motion/CG hybrid style, the story is a simple one — a snail yearns to see the world, so it catches a ride on the back of a whale.

In one sequence, the snail is looking up at the night sky filled with stars. Lang says, “This shot pretty much sums up for me what our film is about: confronting the vastness of the universe and our feelings of insignificance, with a little help from our friends.”

When adapting “The Snail and the Whale” into a short film, Max Lang and Daniel Snaddon had to find ways of stretching out the very short story into a nearly 30 minute short film. Both of them found different ways of bringing more to the story. For Lang, he added a scene where the snail initially tries to hitch a ride with on a boat but nearly gets eaten by seagulls. “What that helped us to establish was that she was trying, she had the drive to go out there. But it’s a dangerous world and this establishes stakes as well. She’s a little snail but she’s also brave,” he tells us in our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above). Snaddon echoes these thoughts and adds that he wanted to help accentuate the beauty of the story as well as the characters. “It’s not really a comedy.

Best Animated Short Film

Awards Prediction Commentary: The Academy announced the shortlist for the animated short contenders, and they produced an interesting crop of selections. Netflix is placing all their power and influence behind the emotional “If Anything Happens I Love You.

Netflix has confirmed that 44 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in Ju;y including: season 3 of “Stranger Things”; season 4 of “Queer Eye”; season 7 of “Orange is the New Black”; and season 11 of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”

Among the new films on offer are: several installments of “Bangkok Love Stories”; a remake of “Point Blank” starring Anthony Mackie; the documentary “The Great Hack”‘; and the mockumentary “Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein.”

Netflix has everyone’s Fourth of July entertainment covered.

Hitting the streaming platform on July 4 is “Stranger Things” season three, which is finally returning two years after its predecessor. Martin Scorsese fans are also sure to be excited once they see four of the director’s films (“Taxi Driver” “Mean Streets” “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and “Who’s That Knocking at My Door?”) ready to stream on the first day of the month.

Additionally, Fourth of July celebrants can look back on history with Netflix’s own revisionist features such as “Inglourious Basterds” before enjoying some family fun with more kid friendly options like “Megamind” and “Princess and the Frog.”

It’s almost July. We know that because Netflix has come through with its list of new content being added in July, and what titles are being removed from the streamer throughout the month.

Most notably, “Stranger Things” Season 3 is dropping on July 4, so you can watch fireworks And be reunited with Eleven, Will Byers, Dustin, Mike, Lucas, Max, Nancy, Jonathan, Steve Harrington, Joyce and Hopper at long last, all in one day.

“Queer Eye” Season 4 is comin’ at ya July 19, along with new episodes of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” The seventh and final season of “Orange Is The New Black” comes July 26.

Annecy — At Annecy to talk audiences through “Zog,” the latest in a line of hugely popular of painstakingly crafted half-hour films for the BBC and Zdf whose lineage stretches back through “Revolting Rhymes” to the “The Gruffalo,” London-based Magic Light Pictures has confirmed a swathe of sales on its upcoming half-hour, “The Snail and the Whale.”

The film will premiere in the U.K. on BBC1 as a highlight of its Christmas schedule in 2019. Alongside core partner Zdf in Germany, further confirmed pre-sales include France Televisions; Svt (Sweden), Dr (Denmark), Rte (Ireland), ABC (Australia), Showmax (Africa), Czech Television, Noga in Israel; Vpro in the Netherlands; and Slovenia’s Rtv.

Is it possible to have sympathy for a universally recognized “bad guy” like the Big Bad Wolf? Well, “Revolting Rhymes,” one of this year’s five nominees at the Oscars for Best Animated Short Film, looks to do just that. Based on the stories by Roald Dahl, The British short marks the second bids for both Jakob Schuh and Jan Lachauer. Schuh was nominated in this category in 2010 for “The Gruffalo” and Lachauer was also nominated in this category in 2013 for “Room on the Broom.”

Gravity may be set in space, but it achieved a landslide at the 86th Academy Awards, taking seven Oscars, while 12 Years a Slave went home with three.

Through its UK producer, David Heyman, Gravity qualifies as a British film, and its Oscar wins come in the wake of the best British film award at the Bafta ceremony. Amanda Nevill, CEO of the BFI, the UK's lead film agency said: "We join the whole British film industry in congratulating Steve McQueen on the awards for his remarkable and important film, 12 Years A Slave, and Alfonso Cuarón whose astonishing film, Gravity was made right here in the UK. At last night's Academy Awards, French sci-fi short Mr. Hublot took home the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Immediately after its victory, the film became available on YouTube, where it can be streamed in full. Mr. Hublot runs for 11 minutes and focuses on adorable goggled man who lives in a futuristic city. To win its Academy Award, it beat out another film--Room On The Broom--that had also previously posted clips to YouTube. One of last year's Animated Short Film nominees, Fresh Guacamole, has received more than 3.7 million YouTube views to date. The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

It was another incredible night at the 86th Academy Awards earlier this evening (March 2), as Ellen DeGeneres hosted a wonderful show filled with fabulous moments.

Big wins went to Jared Leto and Lupita Nyong'o in the Supporting Actors categories, while Cate Blanchett and Matthew McConaughey took home the golden statues for their work as Leading Actors.

Meanwhile, the cast and crew of "12 Years a Slave" was recognized with a Best Picture Oscar and Alfonso Cuaron took home the award for Best Director.

12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.

Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

The Oscars took place on Sunday with "12 Years a Slave" ending up being the big winner of the night, with a total of three awards for best picture, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actress. But it was "Gravity" that took home the most prizes, a total of seven. Most of the awards were for achievement in the technical department, except for Alfonso Cuaron, who won in the best director category. Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey won the best actor award for "Dallas Buyers Club" and Cate Blanchett won the best actress award for "Blue Jasmine." After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.

The 2014 Oscar Awards have been handed out and it to no real surprise... there were few surprises as 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley) while Gravity, unsurprisingly, ended up taking home the night's largest number of wins with seven, none bigger than a Best Director win for Alfonso Cuaron. In the acting categories the only category that seemed up for grabs was Supporting Actress, but as I said, that went to Lupita, which may have something to do with Jennifer Lawrence wearing red... The winners of the 2014 Academy Awards will be unveiled tonight (March 2) at a star-studded ceremony from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

It's Oscars time again! With the 86th Annual Academy Awards beginning, it's finally time to find out which films the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences determined were the best of the best in the past year.

Waking up bright and early, Chris Hemsworth headed over to the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, CA to announce the 2014 Academy Award nominations on January 16.

In addition, the President of the Academy, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, took to the stage to kick off the day in honor the "heroes" in the film industry and read off the list with the "Thor" hunk.

Starting off the nominees list were the talented men in the Supporting Actor category including Barkad Abdi, Bradley Cooper, Michael Fassbender, Jonah Hill and Jared Leto.

As for the ladies in the Supporting Actress category, Sally Hawkins, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong'o, Julia Roberts and June Squibb each earned recognition.

When it came to the Best Picture nominees, nine films including "American Hustle," "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Gravity," "Her," "Nebraska," "Philomena," "12 Years a Slave" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" gained a nod.

12 Years a Slave won the big prize of the night, but Gravity took home the most awards overall with seven.

Slave, the historical drama based on the true story of Solomon Northup, took home Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (for Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Adapted Screenplay (for John Ridley).

Meanwhile, Gravity earned honors for Alfonso Cuaron (Best Director), Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.

Including Nyong’o, the acting awards went as predicted, with Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), and Jared Leo (Dallas Buyers Club...

The 2014 Academy Awards have (finally) arrived, and we can't wait to see what happens.

With huge international stars, like Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Matthew McConaughey up for Oscars, and some big movies, like "Gravity," "12 Years a Slave," "Captain Phillips," "Philomena," and "American Hustle," vying for the top prize, this year's ceremony is as competitive as ever.

Well folks, it’s almost over. This crazy awards season is going to come to an end tomorrow and we’ll know what that Academy thinks the best films, techs, and performances of 2013 were. It’s been tough to get a true gauge of the season and the Oscars could really go any way. So here are the final predictions that I have made for the Oscars.

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.

The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.

Welcome to Oscar Week!

From Tuesday through Saturday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences invites movie geeks each night to get an up close look at the various categories and nominees.

Kicking off the week was the “Oscar Celebrates: Shorts” event on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Actor Kevin Pollack hosted the evening with screenings of all the 2013 Oscar-nominated films in the Animated and Live Action Short Film categories, plus onstage discussions with the filmmakers.

So what exactly qualifies a film into these categories? According to AMPAS rule 19, “a short film is defined as an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits.” It goes on to say, “An animated film is created by using a frame-by-frame technique, and usually falls into one of the two general fields of animation: character or abstract.

We are now less than a week away from the 2014 Oscars and I'll be posting my final predictions soon enough and asking for you to place your votes on each category as well leading up to the March 2 festivities. But in the meantime, Bovada (via Slashfilm) have posted updated Las Vegas odds on all 23 categories and for the most part it's just as you'd expect. In Best Picture it's just as close a race as we've been saying some time though Oscar prognosticators tend to be leaning more toward Gravity as of late. Personally I'm pretty sure I'll be holding on to 12 Years a Slave by the time the show starts and it seems Vegas will agree. Some of the more interesting races include Best Foreign Film, which Vegas currently pegs The Great Beauty as the frontrunner and it certainly seems to be the film with the most juice. Currently...

What were the most challenging scenes to animate in the Oscar-Nominated shorts? I posed this to all five directors: Lauren MacMullan ("Get A Horse!"), Daniel Sousa ("Feral"), Shuhei Morita ("Possessions"), Laurent Witz ("Mr. Hublot"), and Max Lang ("Room on the Broom").In "Feral," the striking story of a wild child trying to re-integrate into civilization, the opening was the most challenging and most important for Sousa. "In it, a rustic windmill emerges from the darkness and we gradually realize that there's a naked child inside. The image of the windmill comes up from time to time throughout the film, and I never really explain its significance. It's one of those motifs that are impossible to write about in a written treatment or a script, because they are a bit surreal and hard to justify. We’re two weeks out from Oscar nominations and now it seems to be about endurance. Which film can make it through the much the cleanest? Are the front runners wavering any? Those are answers we won’t get until the Oscars but with the BAFTAs having just ended its clear that we are in for a great race to the finish.

-The BAFTAs certainly made for an interesting wrench in some of these predictions. 12 Years a Slave had a paltry showing for the majority of the day before taking Best Actor and Best Picture, whereas Gravity and American Hustle both did very well. So where does that put us for Oscars? I’m still going to stick with Gravity for now since the likelihood of a split with preferential balloting isn’t good. The winners of the International Emmys Kids Awards have been announced.

Shows that triumphed in the second annual award ceremony included Room on the Broom, which starred the vocal talents of Simon Pegg, David Walliams, Rob Brydon and Gillian Anderson.

Pet School - which is presented by Aaron Craze - and Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom also took home awards.

Canada's The Phantoms and Brazil's Pedro & Bianca and Same But Different also triumphed at the ceremony, which was held in New York City.

International Academy President Bruce L. Paisner commented: "We all know what a great challenge and responsibility it is to produce for children.

"Tonight's winning programmes demonstrate the high standard of quality programming we expect for kids television, and we are proud to recognise them with the Emmy."

As we get closer to the Oscars, ScottFeinberg.com will be breaking down some of the Oscar categories to give you the best idea of what the race will bear out. One of the categories that will differentiate the good Oscar prognosticator from the ok is Best Animated Short Film. Well folks, we’ve reached the point in the Oscar season where every scenario starts playing in Oscar watchers heads. This longer phase two has made everyone a bit jumpy and all of the categories that aren’t locked up begin to look baity. With the USC Scripter and Adg Awards to add into the equation, let’s take a look at the race.

-The Ace Eddies handed their prizes to Captain Phillips, American Hustle, and Stories We Tell. Phillips and Stories We Tell are both admirable choices, and Hustle was expected, if a bit disappointing. Where does this put us for Oscar? Well Captain Phillips has long been the threat to Gravity in many of the tech categories and they’ve gone for Paul Greengrass films in this category before. In previewing all of the short films that have been nominated for the 2014 Academy Awards this season, I must give a shout out to film programmers here and around the world.  I don't know how you guys do it, but trying to watch an amalgam of films (short and feature length) and deciding which you like best makes my brain turn to oatmeal.

Okay, so that's a little dramatic, but I have a new respect for both programmers and short filmmakers alike. To make a feature is an incredible feat, but to try and tell a story in under 20-30 minutes? The thought alone could make one's head spin. Thankfully, the Academy has already narrowed down which films they think are the cream of the crop, and it's easy to see why.

Animated Shorts

I've always been one to gravitate towards this category.

I recently chatted with the Oscar nominees for "Feral" (Daniel Sousa), the Annie-winning "Get a Horse!" (Lauren MacMullan), "Mr. Hublot" (Laurent Witz), "Possessions" (Shuhei Morita), and "Room on the Broom" (Max Lang). We discussed personal connections and challenges. Interestingly, all five of the films explore the theme of adjusting to change in our lives.What's the reaction been like in seeing “Get a Horse!,” this unique hyrbrid representation of Mickey?Lauren MacMullan: It's been great to see people react to it in a theater: they gasp at Mickey coming out of the screen; I've seen some little kids reach up into the air for the animals as they swing out. So we'e got a range of reactions from critics and cinephiles and at the same time kids whose first movie this is.The world of ‘Mr. Hublot’ reminded me of "Brazil."Laurent Witz: Ah, Brazil is definitely an inspiration.

It’s been a pretty busy week in the movie industry, especially on Saturday when three major guilds handed out prizes. Surprisingly though, nothing much seems to have changed in the race. The Oscar Predictions were due for a polish though, and so I’ve updated them to reflect the newest information.

-No film has ever lost Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Screenplay in the same night. Could American Hustle become the first? Looks like it. I wrote last week that if Her won the WGA prize for screenplay that the race could be over, so the predictions reflect that. Still seems off that American Hustle won’t win a single Oscar.
