Exclusive: Newcomer Rueby Wood (Broadway’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), Aria Brooks (Harriet) and Joshua Bassett (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) have signed on to star alongside Lisa Kudrow in Disney+’s musical comedy adaptation of Tim Federle’s award-winning novel, Better Nate Than Ever.

The family film written and directed by Federle centers on 13 year-old Pittsburgher Nate Foster (Wood), who, together with fellow theater kid Libby (Brooks), sneaks off to a major musical audition in New York City after not being cast in their school musical. Wood landed its title role following a nationwide search.

Bassett will play Nate’s older brother, Anthony, with Kudrow as his long-lost aunt Heidi.

Former Scandal star Bellamy Young is returning to ABC as a lead opposite John Ortiz in Promised Land, a Latinx family drama starring Ortiz and Christina Ochoa.

Written by Matt Lopez and directed by Michael Cuesta, Promised Land is an epic, generation-spanning drama about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley.

Young will play Margaret Honeycroft, a hotel magnate and longtime nemesis of vineyard owner Joe Sandoval (Ortiz).

Ochoa stars as Veronica Sandoval, along with Cecilia Suárez as Lettie Sandoval, Augusto Aguilera as Mateo, Mariel Molino as Camila Sandoval, Tonatiuh as Antonio Sandoval, Andres Velez as Carlos, Katya Martín as Juana and Rolando Chusan as Billy.

Kathleen Turner has been tapped for a lead role opposite Woody Harrelson, Justin Theroux and Domhnall Gleeson in The White House Plumbers, HBO’s five-part limited series that revisits one of the biggest political scandals in American history, Watergate.

The project hails from Veep executive producers Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck, David Mandel and Frank Rich, and Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad’s The District. The limited series is a co-production between HBO and wiip.

Created and written by Gregory and Huyck and directed by Mandel, The White House Plumbers is based part on public records and the book Integrity by Egil “Bud” Krogh and Matthew Krogh. The series tells the true story of how Nixon’s own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt (Harrelson), and G. Gordon Liddy (Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they zealously were trying to protect.

When Cobra Kai returns to the mat early next year, it’s going to have some newly upgraded cast members in tow.

Vanessa Rubio and Peyton List have been promoted to series regular ahead of the Netflix drama’s fourth season, our sister pub Variety reports. Rubio, of course, plays Carmen Diaz, Miguel’s mom and Johnny Lawrence’s love interest, while List portrays Tory Nichols, one of the fiercest and most villainous members of the Cobra Kai dojo.

After recurring on Cobra Kai, Vanessa Rubio and Peyton List have been promoted to series regulars for the upcoming Season 4 of the popular Netflix series starring Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. Additionally, Dallas Dupree Young (Cousins for Life) and newcomer Oona O’Brien have been tapped for recurring roles on the fourth season of the Karate Kid sequel series.

Rubio has portrayed Carmen Diaz since Season 1, appearing in 16 episodes. Carmen is Miguel’s (Xolo Maridueña) hard-working mother who would do anything to protect her son.

List has played Tory Nichols, since Season 2, appearing in 15 episodes. Tory is a vtroubled teen who speaks her mind and is willing to take on anyone in a fight.

Exclusive: Jacob Laval has landed the title role in The Unbreakable Boy, joining previously announced star Zachary Levi in the inspiration drama from Kingdom Story Company and Lionsgate. Meghann Fahy, Peter Facinelli, Drew Powell, Pilot Bunch, and Emmy winner Patricia Heaton are also set to co-star in the film which was written and will be directed by Jon Gunn.

“The deadline to be out of your homes is now Christmas Eve,” warns Christine Baranski in the first trailer for Netflix’s “Christmas on the Square.” Boasting 14 original songs by the film’s star and executive producer Dolly Parton, the movie musical finds Baranski’s Regina Fuller threatening to sell her entire hometown to a property developer before Parton’s Angel inspires in her an emotional and spiritual reawakening. Watch the trailer above.

The trailer offers a first look at the film’s large ensemble, which features Jenifer Lewis as the local hairdresser, Treat Williams as the general store owner and Regina’s old flame, and Josh Segarra as the town’s pastor. Directed and choreographed by Emmy-winner Debbie Allen (“Fame”), the movie promises an endless holiday mirth, heart, and even a few tears when it drops on the streaming service on Nov. 22.

Going from the fairytale character to taking on The Right Stuff‘s Gordon “Gordo” Cooper was an “opportunity to play somebody who was a real person and was a test pilot and then went on to be an astronaut,” O’Donoghue enthuses to TVLine, “and he’s got quite some clout. Just the idea of getting to play somebody like that was a dream for me.”

Mac Davis, whose music career included recording 20 albums, writing the Elvis Presley hit “In The Ghetto” and starring in films like North Dallas Forty with Nick Nolte and on his own TV show, died Thursday in Nashville. He was 78.

His manager and longtime fried Jim Morey said Davis died after complications from a recent heart surgery.

The Lubbock, Texas-born Davis recorded 20 albums and charted 40 singles and was as prolific a songwriter, with song titles to his credit including “In the Ghetto” and “A Little Less Conversation,” both made famous by Elvis Presley. Other Elvis hits included “Memories” and “Don’t Cry Daddy.” Davis’ songs also included “I Believe in Music,” “Something’s Burning,” “It’s Hard to Be Humble.”

NBC is developing God’s Country, a drama inspired by Blake Shelton’s hit song of the same name. The project hails from the long-time Voice coach Shelton, Las Vegas creator Gary Scott Thompson and Universal Television.

Written by Thompson, in God’s Country, when the patriarch of a hardworking Midwestern farm family dies mysteriously in a car accident, his grown children discover he was keeping a devastating secret they could never have imagined.

Shelton’s song “God’s Country”, written by Devin Dawson, Hardy and Jordan Schmidt, was released in March 2019. It has gone triple platinum and won Single of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards last week. The song’s official video has been viewed more than 114M times on YouTube alone. Netflix’s Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings anthology series, released last November, featured eight installment, each inspired by a Parton song. During a PaleyFest LA panel discussion about the series, executive producers Parton and Sam Haskell were asked whether there will be a second season.

“Netflix wants to continue with us,” Haskell, Parton’s long-time producing partner, said. “Dolly and I have several other things in development that we are excited about that we hope you see in later years as we get through this pandemic and try to figure out how are we going to be able to deal with production as we look at all these protocols we have to meet in order to make production happen. I’m spending a lot of time getting scripts written now so that we will be ready to go when it’s safe.”

“Black Mirror” is the three-time reigning champion in Best TV Movie, an Emmy race ostensibly for one-off productions. The dystopian satire was expected to contend to extend its record, which it set when it won for the second time, but its victories were so controversial that the academy amended eligibility requirements. Movies (and episodes entering as movies) now must have a minimum 75-minute runtime to qualify for Best TV Movie. This disqualified all episodes from the fifth (and probably final) season of “Black Mirror,” which had already been produced when the academy announced the change.

Dolly Parton has developed a new Netflix anthology series called “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings,” which dramatizes many of her beloved songs. The final episode of the season, titled “These Old Bones,” is being submitted at this year’s Emmys under the TV Movie category.
