Since we’ve already had faith-based features involving football, baseball (“Where Hope Grows”), basketball (“Slamma Jamma”), boxing (“Carman: The Champion”), competitive skateboarding (“Hardflip”) and even mixed martial arts (“The Fight Within”), it was doubtless inevitable that someone would produce a movie where the Lord works in mysterious ways on the golf course. Robert Redford’s “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (2000) didn’t quite qualify, given the nondenominational nature of its spirituality. On the other hand, “Walking With Herb” is explicitly and unashamedly upfront about depicting how an agent of God, or someone of an even higher pay grade, might directly intervene in providing a shot at redemption — and no handicap at all — for a golfer far from the fairway.

A new year has arrived but Amazon Prime is looking to the past.
That’s not a bad thing mind you, as for its list of new releases in January 2021, Amazon is bringing back some classic movies and TV shows for its host of subscribers. We’ll get to the Amazon originals in a moment but for now, feast your eyes on January’s impressive library additions for the streamer.
Jan. 1 marks the arrival of all eight seasons of Dexter…roughly four and a half of which are great! Dexter will be receiving its own Michael C. Hall-approved revival later this year and thanks to Amazon you can catch up with the first run again. Speaking of show’s with disappointing conclusions, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother will come to Amazon on Jan. 19. A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.
Thankfully Hulu’s library titles are a bit livelier this month. Jan. 1 sees the arrival of Blade Runner: The Final Cut,...

Executive produced by famously Christian retired football player Tim Tebow, “Run the Race” operates differently than most faith-based productions, in the apparent hopes of reaching a younger, wider audience that may or may not be inherently interested in religious entertainment.
Directed by Chris Dowling, this is unequivocally a message-pushing drama, but one with a subtler touch and more artistic merit than many of its thematically linked predecessors.
Its kinetic opening sequence is a sharply edited series of shots following high-school quarterback Zach Truett, as he scores nearly half a dozen touchdowns on game night to get noticed by a Florida Gators scout. All of it is set to rap music and executed with unexpected cinematic flair; in fact, the movie’s first act plays as though this were a secular sports movie.

Kristoffer Polaha has been a staple on the small screen since 2001, starring in such series as “Life Unexpected,” “Backstrom” and “Condor.” More recently he joined the Hallmark family with holiday movies (“Rocky Mountain Christmas”) and mysteries (“Pearl in Paradise”) and going forward will add even more of films to his plate. This month he can be seen in the Tim Tebow-produced “Run the Race” and next year he will boast being a part of Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984.”

The Elizabeth Banks-directed Pitch Perfect 2, the sequel to the 2012 film, became the latest number one hit of the year, as the Anna Kendrick-starring feature displaced the reigning champion Avengers: Age of Ultron with a total of $70.3 million. The Marvel feature, while falling to third place on the box office chart, still earned $38.8 million over the weekend, enough to leapfrog it above Furious 7 as the highest grossing feature of 2015 to date. The other big opener of the weekend, the George Miller-directed Mad Max: Fury Road, rounded out the top three by landing in second place with a total of $44.4 million.
Last weekend’s fifth place finisher Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 continued to hold steady in the same spot this weekend with a total of $3.6 million, tying it with Furious 7, while Hot Pursuit fell to fourth place in its second weekend, earning $5.8 million in a...

One of the most intriguing aspects of Where Hope Grows is also among the least important: Danica McKellar (that's Winnie Cooper to us mere mortals) and William Zabka ("Sweep the leg, Johnny!") play a married couple. The faith-based drama surrounding their tertiary relationship tells of a washed-up ballplayer whose unexpected friendship with a young adult living with Down syndrome yields many insights of the life-affirming variety. Writer-director Chris Dowling handles that worrisome premise with a more even hand than this genre's ill-advised predecessors, though Produce (David DeSanctis), the inspirational teen in question, is often reduced to a narrative device rather than a three-dimensional character. Calvin Campbell (Kristoffer Polaha) is a single fat...

Filmmaker Chris Dowling, an alumnus of the radio-tv-film program at The University of Texas at Austin, wrote and directed family drama Produce, which debuted at the Dallas International Film Festival last week. Although this film deals with some heavy-hearted issues, overall Produce is an engaging and entertaining story that should please viewers.
The opening sequence of a morning routine of breakfast, shower and a bike commute to work at first appears typical, until the camera angle widens and we see the character simply known as Produce (David DeSanctis), who has Down's Syndrome. It's this foundation that sets an important plot point for the film -- Produce is not defined by his condition despite the challenges and prejudices that he faces daily. He wants nothing more than to be employee of the month at the Value Market where he works as a produce clerk. Sadly his manager and co-workers don't respect him or appreciate his strengths.
