Furthermore, the movie netted awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Recording from Golden Horse and was screened in Cannes in the competition section, among numerous other festivals around the world.

Taiwan cinema has presented some of the best entries in the realistic/arthouse gangster film genre, with movies like “Dust of Angels”, “The Great Buddha+” and “Godspeed” highlighting the fact quite eloquently. Another standout of this approach is definitely “Goodbye South, Goodbye” a film, however that was the last of the Taiwanese auteur that was not successful.

Gao, an entrepreneur/gangster, rides the train to Pinghsi to set up an illegal gambling parlor, along with his friend Hsi. Also with them is his acolyte Flatty and his girlfriend, Pretzel, who works in a nightclub. Ying, Gao's girlfriend works in the same club but she does not like the people he associates with, considering them dangerous. Gao has already agreed with Hsi to open a nightclub in Shanghai but Ying pressures him to stay in Taiwan, to open a restaurant together.

The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television has brought a delegation of companies to Busan’s Asian Film Market for the first time, including leading producers such as Galloping Horse, Stellar Megamedia and Desen International Media.
The delegation also includes Hairun Pictures, Hs Media Co, Goldsome Pictures, Forbidden City Film Co, October Days Culture Media Co and The Mirage Culture & Media. The Beijing International Film Festival (Bjiff) and Beijing Film Market (Bfm), which are both organised by Beijing Sapprft, are also attending the market.
Zhao Zhiyong, assistant director of Beijing Sapprft and executive deputy secretary of Bjiff’s organising committee, said a major reason for attending the market is China’s growing interest in working with Korea.

Arclight Films’ Asian label, Easternlight Films, has picked up international rights to The Queens, directed by and starring Taiwanese singer and actress Annie Yi.
Produced by Beijing-based Desen International Media, the romantic comedy also stars Korean actress Song Hye Kyo and Chinese actress Vivian Wu. Chinese release is scheduled for November 7.
The film follows three cosmopolitan women, an actress, a PR specialist and a gallery manager, all wrestling with the ups and downs of their romantic lives. “We want to present the mystery, desires, sorrows and pain in urban relationships”” said Desen’s Ann An. “The motto for women from the film is ‘Don’t be a slave, and don’t be a queen, just be yourself’. The characters go through the transformation from ‘being a queen’ to purely ‘being themselves’.”
