Israeli surrogacy drama “A Body That Works” has been renewed for a second season.

“A Body That Works” (titled “Goof Shlishi” in Hebrew) was Israel’s highest rating drama of 2023. The series, which stars Rotem Sela (“The Baker and the Beauty”) and “Fauda’s” Lior Raz, tells the story of a couple struggling with infertility who enlist a surrogate.

Season 2 will pick up directly after the last season, with Ellie (Sela) and Ido (Yehuda Levi) separated and co-parenting their son, who was delivered via surrogate Chen (Gal Malka). Raz plays a love interst.

Sela and Malka jointly won Series Mania’s best actress award at last year’s festival for their roles in the series.

All four leads return for the six-episode second season along with the creative team, comprised of director Shay Capon (“The Writer”) and executive producers Shira Margalit and Elad Koperman.

Exclusive: UTA has signed actor Abigail Cowen for representation in all areas.

Cowen stars in Netflix’s teen drama series Fate: The Winx Saga, which topped the streamer’s Top 10 Movie and TV series for the entirety of its premiere-week run. Based on Winx Club, Iginio Straffi’s animated series for Nickelodeon, the show follows Cowen’s Bloom Peters — a fairy adjusting to life in the Otherworld, where she must learn to control her dangerous magical powers. It returns for Season 2 on September 16.

Cowen has been seen on such notable series as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Stranger Things, Wisdom of the Crowd, The Fosters and The Power Couple.

Exclusive: CBS is developing Married With Friends, a multi-camera comedy inspired by and starring real-life married couple Blake Lee and Ben Lewis (Arrow).

Written by Julia Meltzer, with Fam and In the Dark creator Corinne Kingsbury supervising, Married With Friends is an ensemble about a millennial friend group navigating life, friendships, and romantic relationships (or lack thereof) with Arthur and Bo – a gay, married couple, played by Lee and Lewis, – as the glue that holds them all together.

Kingsbury executive produces via her Eighty-Two Cents productions. Lee, Lewis and Meltzer is co-executive producer. CBS Studios produces in association with Eighty-Two Cents.

Universal Television and Keshet Studios, which co-produce “La Brea” for NBC, have renewed their first-look programming deal for a third term.

The two studios are developing two scripts for two U.S. adaptations for NBC — “The A Ward,” based on Keren Margalit’s “Yellow Peppers” with Arika Mittman, in addition to a remake of Seven Studios’ “Secret Bridesmaids’ Business” with Deirdre Shaw, which is currently titled “Ties That Bind.” They are also producing a spinoff of Keshet’s feature “Save Yourselves!”

“We’ve had an incredibly fruitful relationship with Keshet Studios since 2014 and are excited to continue our collaboration,” said Universal Television president Erin Underhill. “They have a keen eye for distinct and commercial material and terrific talent relationships, and we look forward to creating emotionally resonant and successful projects together in the years ahead.”

Keshet Studios, the company behind series including ABC’s The Baker and the Beauty and NBC’s The Brave, has extended its first-look deal with Universal Television.

It marks the third term for the deal between the NBCU studio and the LA-based production arm of the Israeli media giant.

As part of the deal, the two companies are developing a TV adaptation of sci-fi comedy feature Save Yourselves! The film, which premiered at Sundance last year, comes from writer-directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson.

Neve Campbell is returning to the small screen.

The actress will co-star in The Lincoln Lawyer, the forthcoming Netflix series from David E. Kelley.

Campbell is set to play Maggie McPherson, a passionate Deputy District Attorney who was previously married to Mickey Haller, played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo.

Campbell was also approached to star when the series was in the works at CBS.

The Lincoln Lawyer was shelved at CBS last year, but Netflix swooped in last month to confirm it was picking the show up with a straight-to-series deal.

Novel writer Michael Connelly revealed the news at the time.

Almost eight months after being shelved at CBS, the streamer has announced a series order for the project.

In a statement today, novel writer Michael Connelly wrote, “Today, I’m excited to announce that after a bit of a journey, Mickey Haller will come to life once again on screen — this time in the TV series adaptation of The Lincoln Lawyer coming to Netflix and starring the wonderful and talented Manuel Garcia-Rulfo."

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is set to star in Netflix’s “The Lincoln Lawyer” series from David E. Kelley, the streaming service said Monday.

The series, which hails from A+E Studios, was first given a series commitment at CBS in August 2019, but the broadcaster scrapped the project last May.

Based on Michael Connelly’s “Lincoln Lawyer” book series, the drama follows Mickey Haller (Garcia-Rulfo), an iconoclastic idealist who runs his law practice out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, as he takes on cases big and small across Los Angeles. The 10-episode first season of the Netflix show will be adapted from “The Brass Verdict,” the second book in Connelly’s series.

“The Lincoln Lawyer” will be written by Kelley and Ted Humphrey. Both will executive produce the show, with Humphrey serving as showrunner. Additional executive producers include Connelly and Ross Fineman.

Rachel Kaplan has signed a multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, Variety has learned.

Kaplan, the former head of scripted for Keshet Studios, is also launching her own production company — Absecon Entertainment. Under the deal, she will develop and produce original scripted programming to be produced by Absecon in association with Warner Bros. Television for streaming services and cable, as well as the broadcast networks.

The move brings Kaplan back into the WB fold, as she was previously vice president of drama development at Warner Bros Television earlier in her career.

Rachel Kaplan is heading back to Warner Bros. Television after striking an overall deal with the studio via her new production company.

Kaplan, who has spent the last six years as Head of Scripted for Keshet Studios, has launched Absecon Entertainment, which has signed an exclusive, multi-year deal with the company.

It brings her back to the studio, where she was previously VP, Drama Development, a role that saw her develop or co-develop series including Chuck, Gossip Girl and The O.C.

Under the new deal, she will develop and produce scripted series for streaming services and cable, as well as the broadcast networks.

NBC has announced its second drama pilot pickup of the 2020-2021 season.

The broadcaster has given out a pilot order for the drama “La Brea,” which hails from writer and executive producer David Appelbaum.

In the series, when a massive sinkhole mysteriously opens in Los Angeles, it tears a family in half, separating mother and son from father and daughter. When part of the family find themselves in an unexplainable primeval world, alongside a disparate group of strangers, they must work to survive and uncover the mystery of where they are and if there is a way back home.

Along with Applebaum, Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott, and Rachel Kaplan of Keshet Studios will executive produce as will Ken Woodruff. Universal Television will produce.

Appelbaum and Woodruff previously collaborated on the NBC drama series “Enemy Within,” which Woodruff created and Appelbaum served on as a writer and co-executive producer.

2020 NBC Pilots & Series Orders

Appelbaum was most recently a co-executive producer on The Enemy Within which aired for one season on NBC. He worked on the first six seasons of The Mentalist, eventually rising to co-producer.

Exclusive: FX is rounding out the cast for A Teacher. Manhattan alum Ashley Zukerman, Marielle Scott (Lady Bird), Shane Harper (Awkward) and Adam David Thompson (Godless) are set as series regulars, and Rya Kihlstedt (Yellowstone), Camila Perez (Gotham), Cameron Moulène (Foursome) and Ciara Bravo (Wayne) will recur opposite Kate Mara and Nick Robinson in FX’s 10-episode limited series based on Hannah Fidell’s buzzy 2013 Sundance feature, starring and executive produced by Mara.

A Teacher explores the story behind the mugshot of a female high school teacher (Mara) caught in an affair with her male student (Robinson), revealing the complexities and consequences of these illegal relationships.

Fidell, who wrote, directed and produced the film, will pen the adaptation, direct and executive produce the limited series.

Zukerman will play Matt, Claire’s (Mara) supportive and loving husband with a boyish charm and a creative side that he’s been repressing for years.

The planned series adaptation of the Karen M. McManus Ya book “One of Us Is Lying” is on the move.

The project, which was originally in development at E!, has now moved to the NBCUniversal streaming service with a pilot order, Variety has learned. It tells the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Erica Saleh will write the pilot, with John Sacchi and Matt Groesch executive producing via Sacchi’s 5 More Minutes Productions. Universal Content Productions will produce. Saleh’s previous writing credits include the CBS shows “Instinct” and “Wisdom of the Crowd.” She is repped by ICM and Writ Large.

In addition, the planned reboot of “Queer as Folk,” originally in development at Bravo, is now in development at the streamer. Variety exclusively reported the new show was in the works back in December.

Cop drama The Rookie will be hitting the streets of L.A. again for ABC.

Heading into next week’s Upfronts, the Disney-owned network has decided to renew the Nathan Fillion led series for a second season.

The pick-up for another cycle comes as ratings have been strong-ish for the show. The Rookie has averaged a 1.4 demo rating and 7.59 total viewers season-to-date.

In the show that debuted last October, Castle vet Fillion plays John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the Lapd. Pending adjustment due to football overrun, CBS’ Sunday-night drama premiere is currently reporting 10.5 million total viewers and a 1.4 demo rating — an improvement on both Wisdom of the Crowd‘s year-ago opener (8.8 mil/1.3) and Season 1 average (7 mil/0.9).

If (if!) God‘s numbers hold, they would mark the most watched series launch of the new TV season and third-highest rated drama launch (trailing Manifest and New Amsterdam).

TVLine readers gave God Friended Me an average grade of “B,” with 86 percent planning to tune in again.

Due to an overrun of NFL football on CBS, expect its numbers to be subject to adjustment later today.

Earlier on CBS, the season premiere of “60 Minutes” is currently at a 2.6 rating and 13.7 million viewers, on par with last season’s premiere. The season premiere of “NCIS: Los Angeles” ticked down slightly in the demo from last season.

In a TV season that re-defined “new” and “canceled,” Roseanne was the most successful “new” series launch, ranking No. 3 in total viewers (17.815M) and in the demo (5.0). With Murphy Brown and Magnum P.I. as two of the six new series on the fall 2018 CBS schedule, it feels like a trip back to the 1980s at the network, which will feature five reboots next season.

“Stability where we are strong, change where we need it,” is how CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl described the strategy behind network’s schedule for next season. "This year, we launched four of the Top 10 new shows on broadcast, which led to a very strong roster of young series returning for their sophomore seasons.
