Altruistic Models, Recovering Veterans, Looney Tunes and More at TheWrap’s Short Film Showcase
The directors of an eclectic array of six short films gathered at The Landmark in Los Angeles on Tuesday for TheWrap and Shorts.TV‘s Short Film Showcase, where the filmmakers discussed their inspirations and the challenges behind their work.

Joining TheWrap’s awards editor Steve Pond for a Q&a panel were filmmakers Chris McCaleb (“15 Minutes at 400 Degrees”), Bonnie-Kathleen Ryan (“Real.Live.Girl.”), Jeremy Merrifield (“Balloon”), Asher Jelinsky (“Miller & Son”), Pete Browngardt (“Curse of the Monkeybird: A Looney Tunes Cartoon”), and Mohammad Gorjestani (“Exit 12”).

When asked about the inspirations for their work, some said their shorts came from a very personal place. Bonnie-Kathleen Ryan wrote the script for her film “Real.Live.Girl.” while she was working at the rooftop watering hole Skybar while taking care of her family. From that experience, she wrote a story about a camgirl who shows herself off online to support her Alzheimer’s-stricken father.

Watch: Short Film 'Balloon' Teaches a Lesson About Toxic Masculinity
"What do you want me to say? You gotta hit back..." Or maybe you don't? A much more serious short film to watch when you can. Balloon has debuted online and it's worth a bit of your time to watch. In the brutal battlefield of junior high, Sam has always tried to stay below radar. But all that changes when he discovers he has super powers. Directed by Jeremy Merrifield, he explains that he "made Balloon for my nephew, who at twelve I see already trying to reconcile who he is with what our culture expects of the masculine." It's time to address this outdated concept. With this short film, he explains, "I give my nephew the superpowers he always wanted, and hopefully hint at the kind of hero I hope he still can become." The short stars Jonah Beres, Paul Sheer, Jaylin Ogle, and Carson Severson. We need more...

Queer Short With Oscar Prospects Tackles Toxic Masculinity and Parallels ‘Joker’ — Watch
Jonah Beres in Balloon (2019)
If “Joker” explores the genesis of a villain, “Balloon” — in which a young boy develops superpowers to fight his bullies — depicts the making of a hero.

Superhero movies have dominated mass media for the last 15 years, with no sign of slowing down. While Todd Phillips’ Joaquin Phoenix vehicle would like to position itself as an outsider of the genre, there’s no denying that its connection to DC Comics’ pre-existing intellectual property played a large part in the movie’s massive box-office success. In his emotionally vivid and delicately rendered short, queer filmmaker Jeremy Merrifield has crafted a timely critique of the superhero mythos, offering an alternative world that prizes softness and sensitivity over brute strength.

The film follows a 14-year-old boy named Sam (Jonah Beres) who is being bullied in between his school’s surreal active shooter drills. Amidst pressure to “hit back” and his closest friend abandoning him,...
