Dr. Shushan (Donald Sutherland) runs a work program for the mentally challenged and has done so for many years. Sadly, like too many people I have known in the field, he's so busy with work that he neglects his family. Not surprisingly, his adult son resents him for this and their relationship is strained.
When Shushan has a heart attack, it changes his outlook on life. He realizes all the things he's missed as well as how running the program actually separated him from the folks in the program. One of them, James (Matthew Fox) is a guy he takes under his wings. After all, James is the guy who found him and got help when Shushan had his heart attack. But James is NOT an easy guy to get to know. He screams all the time, has some weird notions and mostly scares people who aren't used to him and his eccentricities. So how can Shushan helping James ALSO help Shushan rebuild his family life? See the film.
While James is certainly a most unusual guy, I've worked with a few folks like him in the mental health field and Matthew Fox does a nice job with the character. The same can be said for Shushan. Overall, it's a very schmaltzy but enjoyable picture. Predictable? Sure...but still very good and worth yout time.
