The 1981 film Love Massacre (Ai Sha) was a jarring shift in genre for Patrick Tam. After making his directorial debut with wuxia outing The Sword, Tam returned with a tale of drama and horror. Now, to the uninitiated, this collaboration between Tam and writer Joyce Chan — they would work together again — seems like the furthest thing from horror; the film’s first half is an attractive but somewhat aimless tune about the pangs of romance, the uncertainty of life, and the toils of obligation. Once you reach the other side of this cinematic compromise between arthouse and commercial, though, it becomes clear why Love Massacre has amassed such a cult following over the years.
In the vein of horror films where expats and tourists discover peril overseas, Love Massacre chronicles the grisly misfortune of several Chinese international students. Shot in California, the film begins with a foreshadowing sign of things...

Filmmaker Max Walker-Silverman’s A Love Song premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022 to much critical acclaim but little fanfare because of its low-key nature. His higher sophomore feature, Rebuilding, is such a beautiful film — both narratively and visually — that it left few dry eyes in the packed audience of its Sundance premiere, and despite having a higher profile cast, it does not sacrifice the qualities that made Walker-Silverman’s debut so special.
Rebuilding Review
Rebuilding follows a rancher who takes up residence in a Fema disaster camp after his ranch and home are completely destroyed by a wildfire, as he struggles to find and understand the meaning of home and community. While this story might seem like fodder for “poverty porn,” in the hands of a filmmaker like Walker-Silverman, it becomes something much more poetic and profound.

After previously starring in one of the most talked-about movies of the year, which has also been a smash hit on streaming, one Challengers star has officially signed on for his next project. A new report from Deadline revealed that Josh O'Connor will topline Kelly Reichardt's next film, which has been dubbed The Mastermind. O'Connor previously starred alongside Zendaya and Mike Faist in Lucas Guadagnino's spicy tennis love triangle drama, and he also appeared alongside Marvel veteran Letitia Wright in Aisha, the immigration drama written and directed by Frank Berry. Many would argue that O'Connor made a name for himself starring in the Netflix Original Series, The Crown, where he played a young version of Prince Charles in 13 episodes between 2019 and 2020.

A wide range of Egyptian films dominate the Arabic-language selection in Venice this year, including two feature debuts — from Khaled Mansour and Muhammed Hamdy — that represent new directions in Egyptian cinema.
Mansour is behind the endearing, audience-friendly “Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo.” It follows a taciturn security guard whose best friend is the canine of the title, played by two different, but similar-looking, highly trained dogs.
Operating at cinema’s more experimental edge is “Perfumed With Mint,” which also screens in TIFF’s Wavelength section. Veteran cinematographer Hamdy (“The Square”) creates a metaphorical film representing a generation that is contaminated with doubts about what a waits them.
Provocative drama “Happy Holidays” marks Palestinian helmer Scandar Copti’s (“Ajami”) first solo outing while “Sudan, Remember Us” is a political documentary from the French-Tunisian-Moroccan journalist and documentarian Hind Meddeb. Both films will also play in the Toronto Film Festival.

The CG-animated film tells the story of Aisha, a young girl living in XI-century Al-Andalus in the south of modern-day Spain. Born into a family of calligraphers, Aisha would much rather work as a pyrotechnic artist on the popular fireworks displays used to celebrate all manner of important occasions.
In addition to their roles as calligraphers, Aisha’s family also safeguards a legendary and dangerous book belonging to the caliph. When a visiting scientist offers to teach Aisha how to make the rocket of her dreams in exchange for the text, the temptation proves too much, and she agrees. Letitia Wright's powerful portrayal of Aisha brings light to the suffering and bureaucracy inherent in navigating the asylum system. Aisha's heartbreaking journey exposes the dehumanizing reality of immigrant struggles everywhere, but her friendship with Josh O'Connor's character is soul-affirming and beautiful. Aisha's one-dimensional portrait of politics is unfortunate, but it's ultimately a sobering and truthful film..
A young Nigerian woman seeking asylum in Ireland faces a looming deportation to certain death in the new film Aisha, which wounds your soul as a heartfelt, distressing, and dehumanizing journey through the bureaucratic maze of refugee resettlement. A captivating Letitia Wright gives light to the knife's edge panic and fear that an uncertain future brings. The film tackles difficult themes with a viewpoint that sometimes paints those against immigration with a generic, cruel brush. That said, there's no denying the harrowing reasons people flee their homelands for safety.

Letitia Wright in Aisha
Cinema is full of big, dramatic stories, but sometimes it’s the day to day struggles that really leave their mark. Widely praised as it travelled the festival circuit, Frank Berry’s Aisha, which opens in the US this week, tells the story of one Nigerian migrant dealing with the Irish immigration system. Afraid that she will be killed or enslaved if she returns home, she is stuck in the limbo of the asylum process, and a growing friendship with a security guard is bittersweet as she feels she has no control over her life.
It’s a film which stands out partly because of the delicate central performance by Letitia Wright, who is best known for her work in the Black Panther films. She’s a big star but, she assures me, she didn’t let that go to her head when seeking a role in this small Irish film.

No Safe Havens: Letitia Wright’s Breathtaking Refugee Turn
Frank Berry’s Aisha is the superbly moving record of a Nigerian refugee’s quiet fight for dignity in Ireland’s inhumane Direct Provision system for asylum seekers. Thoroughly-researched but fictional, gently-paced but absorbing, Berry’s affecting narrative is anchored by standout performances from Letitia Wright (The Silent Twins) and Josh O’Connor (Mothering Sunday). Haunted by forces they can’t control, these two unlikely soulmates form an unexpectedly tender bond; by film’s end, they embody a tragic authenticity reminiscent of Italian neorealism. Even though Irish writer/director Berry is known for socially conscious work (2014’s I Used to Live Here and 2017’s Michael Inside), Aisha is far more than an ‘important’ film bolstered by real-world injustice.…...

"I feel happy. And sometimes I feel really scared." Goldwyn Films from the US has revealed their official US trailer for the indie film Aisha, an emotional drama about an immigration made by Irish filmmaker Frank Berry. This originally premiered in 2022 and opened in the UK back in 2022 as well, debuting on Sky Cinema. It only now has a May 2024 release date (also on VOD) after years in limbo. While caught for years in Ireland's immigration system, Aisha Osagie develops a close friendship with the former prisoner Conor Healy. This friendship soon looks to be short lived as Aisha's future in Ireland comes under threat. Letitia Wright (also seen in The Silent Twins and Wakanda Forever from 2022) stars as Aisha Osagie, with Josh O'Connor, Ruth McCabe, Emmet Byrne, Joanne Crawford, Geraldine McAlinden, Tara Flynn, Joseph Palmer, and Abdul Alshareef. Emma (2020) is a decadent reimagining that balances contemporary sensibilities and progressive themes with Austen's classic tale. Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma (1996) is visually stunning but suffers from lukewarm chemistry and a staid portrayal of Mr. Knightley. Clueless (1995) remains the best and most creative modern adaptation of Austen's Emma, updating the story for a new generation.
Jane Austen's classic novel Emma has been adapted into multiple movies, some greater than others. Every few years, Hollywood dives back into the bodiced world of Regency England to resuscitate one of Jane Austen's spunky, whimsical heroines — with the most recent lavish restoration going to Autumn de Wilde's version, Emma (2020), starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the captivating conductress of romantic ruination. It's the classic tale of pride, privilege, and one irrepressibly likable heroine. Every generation has their favorite version of Austen's story and picking one Emma movie adaptation over another isn't an easy task for fans.

Female friendships and bonding is a genre that Hindi cinema has yet to crack. There are a handful of films about female bonding, but most of them have not worked on the big screen. Veere Di Wedding, Aisha, and Cocktail have explored modern female friendships, and all these films have almost rightly described how bonding works. Interestingly, three out of four are backed by Rhea Kapoor, and the woman has been instrumental in coming up with films that would put female-led storytelling at the center. Karan Bolani’s film, Thank You for Coming, falls into the same genre and revolves around a girl in her thirties who has been seeking her knight in shining armor but has been unsuccessful so far.

She was in conversation with Amish Tripathi, minister (culture and education), Indian High Commission and director Nehru Centre, who is also a bestselling author.
Kapoor said that while Bollywood is changing, the change isn’t quick enough. “The gender pay gap is humongous. And I don’t think that will be narrowing very soon, unfortunately, but the roles are getting meatier for sure,” Kapoor said, adding that her contemporaries like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone have pursued films where they could play the central character.

Andrew Legge’s Lola, a faux found footage film that plays with historical and science fiction, gives weight to an emerging idea: could this be the best year for Irish cinema? If you believe the metrics of Rotten Tomatoes, the best-reviewed film of 2022 was once The Banshees of Inisherin. At the time of writing, it’s An Cailín Ciúin (aka The Quiet Girl), a film in the Irish language. Aftersun, the most beloved of any this year, stars Kildare’s Paul Mescal. With Jessie Buckley’s turn in Women Talking leading from the front, there is the wild possibility that five of next year’s acting nominations at the Oscars could go to people from that damp Atlantic rock—one or two might even win.

Ireland saw a record-breaking €500M ($570M) production spend across film, television drama, documentary and animation in 2021, according to new figures released by national agency Screen Ireland.
That figure tops the previous record set in 2019 by a mammoth 40%.
Naturally, 2020 figures were lower due to the pandemic, which continued to disrupt production well into 2021, but not enough to stop the sector reaching a new high watermark.
As is happening in the UK, international spend is driving the figures. Such production activity, including Disney’s Disenchanted which filmed on location in Dublin and Wicklow, was up 45% in 2021.
However, local Irish production was also on the rise, increasing 52% from 2019 to 2021. Recent projects include Nocebo, Joyride, Aisha and God’s Creatures.
Irish animation is also on the up, continuing a decade of growth. Recent animated projects include feature film Tea for the Dead and TV series Lady Bird Liu.
