Saw at ssxp - film review of The Surfer starring Nicolas Cage

What at first begins as though a run of the mill revenge thriller starring Nicolas cage soon becomes a story about nostalgia, toxic masculinity, fear and anxiety. And the film is better all for it. As usual Nicolas Cage gives this movie his all and which may be one of his best performances in his career. Supporting players manage to match cage keeping this story relatively grounded. Cage keeps The Surfer from going off the rails with his bonkers, anxiety ridden performance while keeping a grounded, layered feel throughout. Without Cage this movie would be an entirely different experience. One of Cage's best in recent times.
