In the summer of 1959 Béla Kreuzer - a loader and gambler - is handcuffed and arrested. He is placed in detention and at first he thinks this is because his dubious activities on the racecourse but it soon turns out that the reason is his participation in the revolution in 1956. During the investigation old friends turn their backs on him as does his girlfriend. The only person he can trust is his cellmate. The ruthless prosecutor would rather have him hanged, but the detective, who is more of a Svejk-ish character, just wants the case off his hands. The prosecutor asks for capital punishment, but the judge opts for a sentence of 15 years in jail, which Béla Kreuzer serves to the last day. When he comes out is 1974 and finds the world is no longer the same.

It is 1912 and war looms on the horizon. The school year begins in a boarding school run by priests. Zoltán's father, is one of the masters and struggling with questions that challenge their faith, while waiting for news of his brother, Titanic passenger, and is a particularly problematic group of new students, many of whom have been fond increasingly heavy play each other jokes. In the summer of 1989 tens of thousands of tourists from communist East Germany came to Hungary. They were deeply disillusioned because they felt they had no future in East Germany. There was no freedom, no choice in the shops, salaries were low and they could not travel except to Eastern Europe. They wanted to go to a prosperous and free West Germany but they could not get passports, so they hoped that by travelling through Hungary, the least suppressed country of the Soviet Block, they could cross the Iron Curtain into Austria and then travel on into West Germany. For them the Hungary of twenty years ago was the new east-west passage.
