You Never Know (1938). Opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre on September 21st. Although a
Cole Porter musical, dismal reviews resulted in
George Abbott being hired to doctor the script and co-direct (with Rowland Leigh). Additional music and lyrics by Dana Suess,
Robert Katscher, Alex Forgarty, Rowland Leigh and Edwin Gilbert were added. Cast:
Clifton Webb,
Libby Holman,
Lupe Velez,
Toby Wing and The Debonaires (see
Harry Murray). Despite the stellar cast and crew, the reviews were dismal and the production was plagued with problems (Libby Holman and Lupe Velez despised each other). Play closed after 73 performances. Clifton Webb was offered an off-Broadway tour and flatly refused.
