Dutch public broadcaster Eo has commissioned a local adaptation of Keshet Intl.’s “The A Word” from Fiction Valley.

The series is based on Keren Margalit’s hit family drama “Yellow Peppers,” produced by July-August Prods. for Keshet Broadcasting. Like the original, Fiction Valley’s six-part adaptation traces a family’s painful and often humorous journey of denial and introspection after their young son is diagnosed with autism.

The latest version of the format follows Fifty Fathoms and Keshet Prods.’ adaptation for BBC One, which has run three seasons and sold in more than 80 territories worldwide.

Known locally as “Het A Woord” and written by Karin van der Meer and Myranda Jongeling, the six-part series will be directed by Anna van der Heide and Remy van Heugten, with Fiction Valley’s Annemieke van Vliet serving as executive producer.

Community Cinema: Verhoeven’s Failed Experiment Confirms Concepts of Authorship

Four years after its premiere in his native Netherlands and a screening at the 2012 Rome Film Festival, Paul Verhoeven’s experimental title Tricked makes its way to Us theaters, available simultaneously streaming exclusively on Fandor. The director playfully refers to the film as 14 ½, referring to Fellini, since ultimately the ambitious endeavor, wherein audience participation was called upon to craft the narrative based on a four page scenario, isn’t quite feature length. Instead, the film includes a behind-the-scenes preface (called Paul’s Experience) documenting the significant pre-production travails, including thousands of scripts sent, none of which were actually used in completion. As such, the project has a rather uneven, cobbled together feel, and seems to prove the concept of the auteur.

Paul Verhoeven’s new-ish feature, Tricked — now hitting domestic shores more than three years after its international debut — is among the stranger exercises we’ve seen from genre cinema in recent years, and I doubt anyone would have my reaction if they were only treated to the final work. Here is a work of many, many contradictions, so numerous that after a while they’re practically stacked on top of each other: thinly plotted and straightforward, yet stuffed to the gills with disturbances and double-crosses; rather chaste, yet willing to indulge any opportunity to feature nudity or states of undress; clearly made for little money, yet composed with an eye for location that lends it great atmosphere. These traits signal inanity, not innovation, but could be explained by a second project — one that isn’t the Dutchman’s own work, yet still comes with your purchase.

Chiefly known for his Hollywood output, which includes films such as Robocop, Basic Instinct, Total Recall and Showgirls, Paul Verhoeven is part of a distinguished lineage of European expats who have made the dream factory great. But the latest project from Verhoeven is the furthest thing from Hollywood one could possibly imagine. This manifests itself not so much in stylistic terms — Tricked (Steekspel) is in fact a soap opera of a comedy — as in the film’s creative process, which saw it being openly crowd-scripted by whomever wanted to contribute. After the first five minutes had been written, the screenplay was posted online where contribution from the public was encouraged in order to fashion a user-generated movie. In Verhoeven’s remarkably well-crafted and likeable film, real estate mogul Remco (Peter Blok) has a weak spot for extramarital affairs, and a wife who is apparently not very concerned about it as...

Cannes - Tricked, the latest film from Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Basic Instinct), has been pre-sold to a number of territories, Film Content Company Europe said here on Monday. Fcce closed pre-sale deals with D’Vision for France, Activers Entertainment for South Korea and At Entertainment for Japan. The drama with the tag line "lies always backfire" focuses on a real estate tycoon and womanizer played by Peter Blok (Black Book). His business partners are scheming behind his back and one of his lovers shows up uninvited - and pregnant - at his birthday party thrown by his wife.
