Mike Milligan, an American TV writer and producer whose credits include “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons,” has died. He was 77.

Milligan died of acute respiratory failure in his West Los Angeles home on Dec. 20, according to a PR representative.

Milligan was a celebrated member of the Writers Guild of America for more than 50 years. With his writing partner Jay Moriarty, Milligan wrote and produced hit TV shows such as “Good Times,” “What’s Happening Now,” “Maude,” “Dear John,” “Here and Now” and “Melba.”

Both Milligan and Moriarty received an NAACP Image Award for their writing and producing work on the Emmy-winning sitcom “The Jeffersons.” The show was among the first American sitcoms to tackle topics such as suicide, transgender identity and white supremacy.

In 1992, the pair served as co-writers and executive producers on NBC’s “Here and Now” starring Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Charles Brown, Daryl Mitchell and Rachael Crawford.

Michael Cuscuna, the three-time Grammy winner, Mosaic Records co-founder, historian and archivist who produced hundreds of jazz reissues and studio sessions during his career, has died. He was 75.

Cuscuna died Saturday of cancer at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, Grammy-winning recording artist Billy Vera, a longtime friend, announced.

Cuscuna produced the 1970 album Buddy & the Juniors, featuring Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Junior Mance, for Vanguard Records, and 1972’s Give It Up, Bonnie Raitt’s lone gold album during her time at Warner Bros.

He produced reissues and studio sessions for Impulse, Atlantic, Arista, Muse, Elektra, Freedom, Novus and virtually the entire Blue Note catalog.

“Plainly stated, Blue Note Records would not exist as it does today without the passion & dedication of Michael Cuscuna,” execs from the label wrote on Instagram.

This fall marks 30 awards seasons I’ve covered, not only as neutral observer, which is my main gig, but also as a fervent film fan, quietly cheering on my filmmaking heroes who sometimes manage to put their teams on the field. Sometimes they even manage to win.

But most of the time, I’ve spent the past 30 years hoping, not hyping.

I’ve hoped that the achievements that seem special to me also resonate with voters for the Oscars, Golden Globes, various guilds and critics’ groups. It doesn’t matter, if you care passionately about great cinema, you never hit the “off” button. But I’ve done so in the context of equal attention to everything, no playing favorites, let the fastest horse win at the gate.

I have also managed to personally avoid the predictions game, which now seems to almost dominate coverage across all publications, including this one.

A new production of Samm-Art Williams’ 1979 play Home, to be directed by Kenny Leon, will begin performances May 17, 2014, at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s American Airlines Theatre / Todd Haimes Theatre, with an opening night set for June 5.

The limited engagement – casting yet to be announced – runs through July 28.

Tony-nominated for its original 1980 Broadway run starring Charles Brown and directed by Douglas Turner Ward, Home was initially staged the year prior by the Negro Ensemble Company and was featured in 2021 as part of the initial year of Roundabout’s Refocus Project.

As described by Roundabout, Home “is a muscular and melodic coming-of-age story that gives voice to the unbreakable spirit of all Americans who have been searching for a place to belong.” The main character, Chephus Miles, “has the whole world in his callused hands – until his sweetheart Pattie Mae goes off to college and marries another man.”
