Young Rock spanned decades of Dwayne Johnson’s life, chronicling his beginnings as a headstrong kid to playing football at the University of Miami to the early days of his professional wrestling career. Dwayne Johnson also plays a future version of himself who is running for president of the United States in the 2032 election. The series started off strong, averaging 3 million viewers per episode in its first season, but the third and now final season of the series found those numbers tumbling to an average of 1.4 million viewers per episode.

NBC has canceled “Grand Crew” after two seasons and “Young Rock” after three seasons.

“Grand Crew,” which comes from Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Goor (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), followed friends Noah, Nicky, Sherm, Anthony, Wyatt and Fay as they navigated the ups and downs of life and unpacked it all at their favorite wine bar.

The cast includes Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, Aaron Jennings, Justin Cunningham, Carl Tart and Grasie Mercedes. The hangout comedy is produced by Universal Television, with Jackson and Goor serving as executive producers.

Based on the life of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, “Young Rock” followed Dwayne as he rose from childhood to a wrestling career to Hollywood stardom. Johnson starred as himself alongside Joseph Lee Anderson as Rocky Johnson, Stacey Leilua as Ata Johnson, Ana Tuisila as Lia Maivia, Adrian Groulx as 10 to 14-year-old Dwayne aka Dewey, Bradley Constant as 15 to 17-year-old Dwayne, Uli Latukefu as 18 to 26-year-old, Fasitua Amosa as Sika Anoa’i, John Tui as Afa Anoa’i and Matthew Willig as André the Giant.

“Young Rock” premiered in February of 2021 and concluded its third season in February of this year. The series was co-created by Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang, who executive produced alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia, Jennifer Carreras, Hiram Garcia and Brian Gewirtz. Universal Television served as the studio in association with Seven Bucks Productions and Fierce Baby Productions.

Young Rock has been canceled at NBC after three seasons.

NBC revealed the cancellation today, along with Grand Crew, while a decision has yet to be made on the future of American Auto. Separately, it picked up single-camera workplace comedy St. Denis Medical, starring Wendi McLendon-Covey and David Alan Grier, to series.

Season 3 saw quite a dip in linear ratings compared to the previous season, managing about 1.4M viewers and a 0.25 rating in the 18-49 demographic, according to live + same-day Nielsen data. Compare that to Season 2, which drew an average of 2.23M viewers and a 0.39 rating. Season 1 was by far the most-watched, averaging more than 3M viewers per episode and an impressive 0.62 demo rating.

The third season premiered in November 2022 and ended its 13-episode run in February.

NBC has yet to make decisions about three of its comedies.

American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.

NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.

American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.

Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.

Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.

Spitzer executive produces via his Spitzer Holding Company with Kapital’s Kaplan.

On Thursday, NBC confirmed it had renewed “Young Rock” for Season 3.

The series stars Johnson himself as he recounts tales of his younger years, Joseph Lee Anderson, Stacey Leilua, Adrian Groulx, Bradley Constant, Uli Latukefu, Ana Tuisila, John Tui, Fasitua Amosa and Matthew Willig.

Nahnatchka Khan, Dwayne Johnson, Jeff Chiang, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras are executive producers.

“Young Rock” is produced by Universal Television, in association with Seven Bucks Productions and Fierce Baby Productions.

Additionally, NBC has renewed its comedy “Grand Crew” for a second season.

Astin will be a recurring guest star in the flash-forward segments of the NBC comedy, which returns on March 15. The character appears before election day 2032, claiming that Dwayne tried to kill him when he was a boy, an allegation that might ruin the former wrestler’s presidential bid.

Sean Astin is joining Dwayne Johnson’s “Young Rock” Season 2 in the role of The Rock’s childhood nemesis, Variety has learned exclusively.

A recurring guest star for the NBC comedy’s upcoming second season, Astin will play Dr. Julian Echo in the show’s fast-forwards. Dr. Echo, who had run-ins with Dwayne as a kid, is now a chiropractor from Minnesota who holds a grudge. He reappears two weeks before election day, claiming that Dwayne tried to kill him, a revelation that threatens to derail the Johnson presidential campaign.

Astin’s recent TV credits include playing Bob on “Stranger Things,” as well as guest stints on “The Big Bang Theory,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Supergirl.” He also served as narrator on last year’s “Playing with Power: The Nintendo Story.” The actor is also known for his roles in “The Goonies,” “Rudy” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Per the official description for the character, who will be a recurring guest star on the upcoming second season of “Young Rock,” Dany is compassionate and caring while also being a disciplined athlete and future CEO. NBC will air original episodes of all five of its comedy series — returning shows Young Rock, Kenan and Mr. Mayor – and new series Grand Crew and American Auto — during the week of December 13, ahead of their regular 2022 season premieres. The standalone holiday specials were initially announced in May before Grand Crew and American Auto had been given series orders.

Production on season two of Universal Studio Group series Young Rock will begin in Queensland this month, with filming to take place on location around South-East Queensland and Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.

The series has received a $6.3 million grant from the Federal Government’s Location Incentive Program with the expectation it will inject more than $47 million into the Australian economy and create approximately 250 jobs for local cast and crew. Screen Queensland is also supporting the NBC-commissioned comedy via its Production Attraction Strategy.

NBC is staying in business with Dwayne Johnson and Kenan Thompson.

The network has renewed comedies Young Rock and Kenan for second seasons. It marks the latest comedy renewals at the broadcaster, having ordered a second season of Mr. Mayor last month.

NBC said Young Rock, which debuted in February, is the No. 2 new comedy of the season in the 18-49 demo and that the pilot episode has been seen by 13.4M viewers. The network also noted that it is its top comedy debut across digital platforms on record through 60 days with 3.6M digital views.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s autobiographical NBC comedy “Young Rock” has found its Vince McMahon in comedian Adam Ray, TheWrap has learned. Additionally, the role of “Macho Man” Randy Savage is being played by Kevin Makely, we’re told.

Ray, who voiced Slimer in 2016’s “Ghostbusters,” will play the future WWE Chairman as he worked his way up the ladder in his father’s pro-wrestling promotional business. Makely, who starred in 2019 western “Badland,” is a spot-on casting as one of the WWF’s most colorful characters.

NBC has announced some more premiere dates, and they include the return of some beloved fan-favorites.

Manifest Season 3 is headed to Thursdays. The high-concept drama, which spent its first two seasons on Mondays, will return to the air on April 1 in the 8/7c slot.

This means that Superstore's sixth -- and final -- season, and the freshman season of Mr. Mayor, will have wrapped their runs by that point.

NBC released the full-length trailer for “Young Rock” on Tuesday, giving a glimpse of the pro-wrestler-turned-Hollywood star’s journey from young kid growing up in Hawaii to getting his start in professional athletics.

The trailer also reveals the “How I Met Your Mother”-esque framing device for the show, which has Dwayne Johnson playing himself as a presidential candidate in 2032, recalling his early life history.

“To understand me,” Johnson says in the clip, “you gotta understand where I came from.”

The series, which hails from “Fresh off the Boat” creator Nahnatchka Khan, focuses on three different chapters of Johnson’s life, from growing up in a strong and resilient family, to being surrounded by the wild characters of his professional wrestling family, to playing football at the University of Miami.

This past fall, NBC shrank its signature Thursday comedy block from two hours to one, and now the network is opening a new comedy beachfront on Tuesday.

New half-hour series Young Rock and Kenan will premiere in the Tuesday 8 Pm hour on Feb. 16. Sophomore musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, which was relocated to the time slot this season and just launched its second season to encouraging ratings, will go on hiatus after airing six episodes and will return later in the spring. It has not been decided yet where the show will return; it likely will be in another time slot as the Tuesday 8 Pm hour will be occupied by The Voice until summer.

NBC is hitting pause on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist to make room for a pair of new comedies fronted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Saturday Night Live staple Kenan Thompson.

Young Rock will premiere on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 8/7c, followed immediately by the premiere of Kenan at 8:30 pm. As these shows will be occupying Zoey’s usual time slot, the musical comedy will go on a brief hiatus after its sixth episode (Feb. 9, 8 pm) and will return in the spring.

Young Rock, the upcoming NBC series inspired by the life of Dwayne Johnson, has started in on production in Queensland, Australia, Universal Television said Monday. The division of Universal Studio Group is producing the series, which will chronicle Johnson’s formative years. NBC gave it a straight-to-series order in January.

Johnson, the actor and ex-wrestling star, is set to appear in each episode of the series, from Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan and co-executive producer Jeff Chiang, who co-wrote the pilot episode. The duo executive produce alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras. Australian natives Jeffrey Walker, who will serve as co-executive producer, and Daina Reid are directing various episodes throughout the series.

The cast includes Adrian Groulx as Dwayne Johnson (aka Dewey) at age 10, Bradley Constant as Johnson at age 15 and Uli Latukefu Johnson from ages 18-20. Stacey Leilua and Joseph Lee Anderson play Johnson’s parents.
