International finance, production and sales company Est N8 has acquired Indonesian horror Sorop during Asia TV Forum & Market (Atf) in Singapore.

Upi Avianto, known for her work on Till Death Do Us Part, Sri Asih,and the My Stupid Boss films, directed the story of siblings who return to their hometown following their uncle’s death and experience terrifying supernatural events.

Hana Malasan, Yasamin Jasem, and Ratu Felisha star in Sorop, which is produced by MD Pictures, part of MD Entertainment, which will distribute in Indonesia on December 19.

The MD Entertainment group is behind the hits Ayat Ayat Cinta and Habibie & Ainun.

Celebrating her recovery from cancer, Purnama (Hana Malasan) invites her younger sister, Kembang (Zara Leola), to go on holiday to a newly opened natural resort in a remote place. To get there, they board a tourist train that specifically takes trips to the resort. A series of terrors and mysteries arise when, every time they pass through the tunnel, one by one the carriages disappear. Now the lives and deaths of passengers and train officers are at stake. Purnama, Tekun (Fadly Faisal) the train steward, and the mysterious passenger Ramla (Putri Ayudya) diligently try to warn people. Unfortunately, as the warning is ignored, Purnama, Kembang, Tekun, and Ramla take action to save the train from the bigger threat that awaits in the final tunnel.

Indonesian director Joko Anwar’s The Siege at Thorn High has wrapped production and is slated for a theatrical release in Indonesia in 2025.

The film is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Anwar’s Come and See Pictures, and was first announced as a Prime Video title in 2022 as part of the streamer’s Southeast Asian originals slate. No one is doing it like Timo Tjahjanto. South Korea’s Barunson E&a has boarded international sales of upcoming Indonesian horror Sorop, which it will launch at the Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm) in Busan.

The feature is directed and co-written by Upi, the Indonesian filmmaker behind 2022 superhero title Sri Asih, which was co-written and producer by Joko Anwar and screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

Timo Tjahjanto, the Indonesian genre film director who commands a fiercely loyal following, has dropped a trailer for his upcoming action thriller “The Shadow Strays.”

Audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival will get the first look at the completed film as it screens in the festival’s Midnight Madness section. It will then upload to Netflix on Oct. 17.

According to a supplied synopsis, the film “follows the story of Codename 13, a young assassin who finds herself suspended after a mission gone wrong. During her downtime, she bonds with Monji, a boy who recently lost his mother to a crime syndicate. Exclusive: Ratu Adil has been marked as a tentpole series in the burgeoning Indonesian streaming market, and here’s an exclusive clip ahead of the action series’ release.

The eight-episode crime drama is launching on local streamer Vidio tomorrow (February 29) and stars Dian Sastrowardoyo, fresh off her leading role in Netflix’s global hit Cigarette Girl, with prolific filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto as producer. The series also stars Nino Fernandez and Hana Malasan.

Indonesian genre specialist Timo Tjahjanto has begun production on “The Shadow Strays,” a new action film project.

Tjahjanto is one half of a writing-directing pair with Kimo Stamboel that are colloquially known as the Mo Brothers and previously delivered “Headshot.” However, it was as a solo director that Tjahjanto was signed to a multi-film deal with Netflix in 2022. He delivered his first picture under that arrangement later that year. “The Big 4” debuted in Netflix’s non-English language top ten.

Production of the new title is handled by Frontier Pictures with Wicky V. Olindo and Anne P. Ralie named as producers. The completion date has not been revealed.

Netflix has announced a second feature film with Indonesian action director Timo Tjahjanto, The Shadow Strays, starring a large ensemble cast of popular young actors.

Tjahjanto previously worked with Netflix on The Big 4, which charted on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English Films chart in the first week of its release.

Currently in production, The Shadow Strays stars Aurora Ribero (Like & Share), Hana Malasan (Ben & Jody), Ali Fikri (Nussa), Adipati Dolken (Posesif) and reteams Tjahjanto with The Big 4 actors Kristo Immanuel and Andri Mashadi.

The film also stars Malaysian actor Chew Kin Wah and veteran Indonesian actor Arswendy Bening Swara, who has recently won multiple awards for Autobiography and Missing Home. Production is through Frontier Pictures with Wicky V. Olindo and Anne P. Ralie on board as producers.
