The fascination with legal dramas and lawyer shows is a worldwide obsession, one that has only continued to grow in popularity as TV audiences have shifted to streaming services like Netflix. Series like Law & Order and its many spin-offs, as well as hit comedies like Ally McBeal and Boston Legal, have humanized the public servants who work in the legal system. Whether it’s a murder trial, a sexual assault case, or attempting to take down a mob boss, the dramatic suspense inside a courtroom is just plain undeniable.
Because lawyer shows are such guaranteed crowd-pleasers, there are a plethora of them in various genres across all kinds of networks. Streaming has been a revolutionary medium in how much it’s changed the way people watch TV, so there’s no surprise that Netflix is the king of digital entertainment, including shows about lawyers. Providing not only the classic...

Welcome to Samdal-ri, the Korean drama starring Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun ended last month. Released in December 2023, the Kdrama received a lot of love from viewers worldwide. Even though it has been 2 weeks since the last episode aired, fans can’t stop discussing the beauty of the show’s storytelling, the characters and the performances.
However, actor Ji Chang-wook recently faced flak from some fans for smoking. On January 26, the Welcome to Samdal-ri team released a behind-the-scenes video featuring Chang-wook and other actors. In the video, the Healer actor smokes an electronic cigarette on the set. To the uninitiated, it is not legal in South Korea to smoke or vape in public places. Smokers must smoke only in designated smoking areas.
In South Korea, fans don’t spare celebrities for breaking rules. Hence, after the video was released, many expressed their disappointment on social media.

There’s no way anybody beats Jeon Hae-woong (Cho Jin-woong) in a hometown election—everyone loves him. Walking down the street means shaking hands and bowing to applause when the people know he’ll fight for them. He is one of them, after all. Thinking as much only proves naïve if the world in which he exists is corrupt and, per the President—also up for re-election—this will be the most transparently legal ballot box since Korea became democratized. He’s therefore a shoo-in upon earning the Democratic party’s nomination. And that’s in the bag, considering his political mentor Kwon Soon-tae (Lee Sung-min) operates as puppet-master for all of Busan’s interests within the capital. Jeon’s victory awaits.
Except, of course, it doesn’t. If you believe it when any politician (especially one at-risk of losing power if the regional elections don’t also swing left...

Korean thriller The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil, hot off the press from its debut premiere at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, hit Fantasia 2019 as a Quebec premiere. The film earned relatively positive reviews all round from several critics and publications. However, any film plays drastically different to paying audiences members, especially against the claustrophobic intensity of the Cannes worldview. Lee Won-tae directs only his second feature with The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil after his directorial debut Daejang Kimchangsoo (Man of Will). The director delivers a hard-hitting and at times, brutally vicious thriller that follows a thin definition of entertainment that is not too far from sadistic pleasure.
Both films from Lee Won-tae have a staggering amount of sadistic qualities concerning their plots. His sophomore effort, however, takes the cake with how far it is willing...

Korean director Won-Tae Lee’s previous film was Man of Will, a period drama about the mistreatment of Korean prisoners. This latest outing is a whole other genre, a classic kick-ass cop movie with the great Dong-seok Ma in one of the lead roles.
As you might have gathered from the title, the three leads are Dong-seok Ma as the Gangster, a lumbering solid mass of trouble who runs illegal slot machine arcades and has his fingers in other pies across town. The Cop is Mu-Yeol Kim, a maverick officer who plays by his own rules. He is a constant thorn in the side of the Gangster but is frustrated by his boss being in cahoots with the mob, curtailing his ability to work. The Devil (Kim Sung Gyu) is a lone serial killer, setting up his kills by bumping into the back of his chosen victim’s car and...

In action films so often it’s all about the gun or the fist, archery has taken the back seat as an inferior way of combat. There has been a slight change lately of course with The Hunger Games and The Avengers with Hawkeye and his exploding arrows; it is nice to see that when archery is featured it’s more about skill and precision than just point and shoot. The archer is skilled and a master of his art, in warfare he could be compared to the modern day sniper, having to take into consideration things like wind speed and direction. War of the Arrows is a film that takes this to a new level, showing how the archer could be the difference between victory and defeat.
