When it comes to revisiting the gateway horror media that haunted our youth, we often find ourselves baffled by the silly and often laughable things that used to scare us. However, sometimes the opposite is true. Sometimes we look back on a piece of media that we enjoyed as children only to realize that it was much darker than our naïve brains could fully comprehend at the time.
A great example of this is Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, a series of Young Adult novels defined by their generally gothic tone and frequent use of gallows humor. While these books were a tremendous hit among the Scholastic crowd (and often served as a dreary substitute for kids who weren’t into Harry Potter), they also contained numerous gruesome deaths and genuinely disturbing plot points that still distress readers to this day. And with the 2000s seeing a...

Dexter: Resurrection edges closer to its summer debut, and the anticipation keeps climbing. This second sequel to the tale of America’s most salacious serial killer has incited a riot with its cast — old hands and new names alike grabbing headlines left and right.
Michael C. Hall returns as Dexter Morgan, the forensic expert by day and vigilante killer by night, a role that has long spotlighted his propensity for dark brilliance. Now, the latest addition arrives with Neil Patrick Harris, who will portray Lowell. The 51-year-old was spotted filming alongside Hall in New York City on Wednesday, donning a brown wig and moustache.
Slipping in as a special guest star, the Gone Girl actor won’t command much screen time, but his tie to Dexter — specifically through the Trinity Killer — stretches back years. A television titan, known for How I Met Your Mother,...

Famed bodybuilder and “The Incredible Hulk” star Lou Ferrigno clearly enjoyed playing a murderous, cannibalistic pig farmer in horror film “The Hermit,” marking his first creature role since the CBS TV series in which he played a raging green monster.
“This guy, he’s kind of possessed,” Ferrigno tells Variety. “So you see the pain. You see the demons in him.”
Los Angeles-based sales company Scatena & Rosner Films is at the European Film Market with the completed cut of horror film “The Hermit,” in which Ferrigno plays a gigantic pig farmer whose mother taught him how to cook humans and make them into jerky. Variety has exclusive access to its marketing trailer (watch above).
“The Hermit” is directed by U.S.-based Italian helmer Salvatore Sclafani and produced by Los Angeles- and New York-based Gerry Pass via his Chrome Entertainment shingle in tandem with Sclafani’s First Child Prods.

Writing TV is a collaborative process, which often means that seeing a writer's credit on top of a TV episode isn't as strong an indicator of their writing style as you'd think. They may have written most of the script, sure, but a lot of what happens is often decided by the showrunner and the other staff writers. Throw in the general chaos that comes with trying to make a career in Hollywood, and the result is you sometimes get writers who veer off in a surprisingly different direction after a major project is finished.
For example: Alec Berg, David Mandel, and Jeff Schaffer were all writers for the hit sitcom "Seinfeld," which went on for nine seasons and became one of the most critically acclaimed and popular shows of all time. When the series wrapped up in 1998, did these writers continue writing for Emmy-nominated, boundary-pushing sitcoms? Well, sort of,...

The most agonizing part of Hollywood is all the near-misses. For every actor who got their big break, there are dozens of actors who almost got it but didn't, often for some arbitrary reason beyond their control. It must be bad enough when this happens for any random movie, let alone one of the biggest movie series of all time. For those aspiring actors who missed out on playing Harry Potter, they had to watch Daniel Radcliffe enjoy what seemed like the time of his life for the next ten years.
The good news is that, if you were good enough to almost get the role of Harry Potter, you were good enough to get other roles. This certainly was the case for at least five of the kids who auditioned for Harry. How do they feel about it, and where are they now? Here's a quick rundown.

Allison Williams has proven herself to be one of the most exciting performers working today with several iconic roles in movies and TV across her relatively brief career. From her breakout role as Marnie Michaels on HBOs Girls to being dubbed a new scream queen due to her success in the horror genre, Williams has consistently confounded audiences' expectations and proved her hidden, often underappreciated talents. Some of the best lengthy book franchises and sagas ever are 00s releases, such as the Horus Heresy novels and The Mortal Instruments series. Titles that are geared toward the younger generations, however, are especially prominent.
Its worth noting that, like any genre, some classic kids' books from the 2000s have aged poorly. Tim Burton is back. The famous filmmaker, artist and guy who showed the world that not owning a comb isn’t a dealbreaker for Monica Bellucci technically never left, but now he’s made a movie that people actually want to see for the first time in a long while.
In addition to directing the highly-anticipated sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And it’s well-deserved, considering his long career, which found him churning out modern classics, followed by some okay stuff, and eventually, a whole bunch of joyless CGI-filled remakes featuring Johnny Depp in increasingly goofy wigs.

Just recently released by Beehive Books, following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Pinocchio: The Illuminated Edition is a uniquely immersive experience that I'd highly recommed to Daily Dead readers. Not just a traditional reprint of Carlo Collodi's work, this "Illuminated Edition" has Mike Mignola teaming up with Lemony Snicket for illustrations and handwritten commentary that create an all-together new experience for this classic tale.
Whether you're a long-time fan of Pinocchio or are reading the story for the first time, The Illuminated Edition offer something new and exciting, and Beehive Books have really produced a high-quality edition that you can proudly display in any book collection. And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

When you’re looking for more than defiant princesses, Minions, and martial arts-wielding animals, indie animation is where you can experience something outside the box. Fortunately, Madman and IFC Films are here to present the Memoir of a Snail teaser trailer, which previews a wonderfully strange-looking animated feature from Academy Award-winning director Adam Elliot.
In the Memoir of a Snail teaser trailer, Grace Pudle is separated from her twin brother Gilbert following their parents’ deaths. Unfortunately for Grace, things don’t get much better after that, and the only one who will listen to her tragic tale is a garden snail named Sylvia.
