Varya Malina and Geoffrey Paschel appeared in 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days but later, he went to prison for domestic violence charges. It follows the ever-changing Doctor as he explores time and space, while he meets a variety of new companions and enemies along the way. Numerous stars have appeared in the show throughout its run, including Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother).
While on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) reflected on his own experience with the show. Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to the neo-noir The Long Game, based on the acclaimed short story by New York Times bestselling author Janet Fitch (White Oleander), slating it for release in theaters and on demand in 2025.
Marking the directorial debut of Jace Anderson, who wrote the script with husband Adam Gierasch, The Long Game sees Oscar nom Kathleen Turner return to the genre in which she burst upon the scene with Body Heat, alongside Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children), and newcomer Sekai Abenì.
Abenì plays Holly Sloan, who needs a break. When she meets and falls for grifter Richard Metzger (Haley), it’s not quite love at first sight, but perhaps an opportunity to help her career. And all Holly has to do is pull a little con on ’80s starlet Mariah McKay (Turner), a rich recluse who has faded into a Norma Desmond-like obscurity.

You Gotta Believe stars Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear as the coaches of an underdog Little League baseball team. This rag-tag group makes it to the Little League World Series in this semi-uplifting sports movie based on a true story. Unfortunately, You Gotta Believe doesn't transcend or subvert the well-worn genre, opting to tell a disorganized narrative that doesn't develop its characters enough to earn its climactic ending. Doctor Who is widely regarded as one of the most successful franchises in history, and with its new home on Disney+, it seems that this success will grow exponentially. Whether they became fans in the early 1960s or tuned in during the 2005 reboot, Doctor Who is a very accessible show, and fans have a lot of content to sink their teeth into. The Boys ascended to its highest mark ever in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of its fourth season finale, and Netflix’s movie Hillbilly Elegy had a resurgence after Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance — whose memoir is the source material for the film — became the Republican nominee for vice president.

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

The Long Game tells the story of the San Felipe Mustangs golf team's triumph over discrimination and prejudice in 1957 Texas. The film dramatizes the personal relationships and struggles of the team members, showcasing their journey to victory. The movie highlights the central role of Jb Pea, played by Jay Hernandez, in leading the underdog team to success.
Although The Long Game is an underdog story, it's also a movie that draws on the real-life experiences of a group of young men who overcame huge obstacles to do what they love. The film draws from Humberto G. Garcias 2012 book Mustang Miracle. Mustang Miracle is about the events that unfolded in 1957 in Del Rio, Texas when a group of Mexican-American high school students formed a golf team and won the state championship. They were initially barred from playing, and their interest in golf stemmed from caddying at a country club that denied entrance to people of color.

Vindication for critics who thought Kevin Costner’s epic “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1″ (Warner Bros.) felt more like a TV drama: It was an immediate #1 on VOD top 10 lists.
The first of a planned four-film series, with the second already completed (and now delayed after the postponement of its August release), it showed poorly in theaters with $28.5 million in U.S./Canada after its fourth weekend. Its rapid transition to home viewing after 18 days (standard for Universal beyond its biggest hits) looks like a smart move: It suggests there is an audience, although perhaps not one eager to watch the 181-minute epic in a theater.
This could help the troubled project gain traction, get it out of the red, and increase interest for “Chapter 2,” wherever/whenever it plays.

There’s been a lot of media commentary recently about an independent film called “The Long Game” that unseated “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” from its No. 1 slot on Netflix in the U.S. “The Long Game,” a period feel-good drama starring Jay Hernandez, Cheech Marin and Dennis Quaid, has also grabbed attention by ranking as Nextflix’s sixth most popular film on a global basis.
In my view, none of the various headlines spurred by “The Long Game” really understood the data aspect that drove what happened with the movie. They didn’t give credit where credit is properly due. The headline I would write would be “Small-Budget, PG, Period, Indie Film with U.S. Latinos Portrayed as Heroes Dethrones $150 Million Hollywood Franchise.” Yes, it’s a bit long but hopefully you get my point.

While Netflix has a lot to answer for after forging a world in which Kevin Hart's Lift becomes the number one most-watched film in the world, it's also got a lot to be proud of. Arguably the best thing to happen as a result of Netflix's domination of the streaming game has been the way in which global audiences have been exposed to films outside of their native countries. It happened when Spanish historical drama "Society of the Snow" -- which did what no other portrayal of the Andes disaster could -- was released on the streamer. Prior to that, "Dark," the German version of "Stranger Things" also became a global hit.

By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

The star-studded world premiere of The Substance brought A-list glamour to the 77th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night. Leading the red carpet charge were acting legends Demi Moore and Dennis Quaid, joined by rising talents Margaret Qualley and director Coralie Fargeat.
All eyes were on Moore, 61, who defied age in a champagne Schiaparelli gown. The ageless beauty exuded confidence as she posed fiercely for photographers on the famed Palais des Festivals red carpet.
Moore’s co-star Quaid, 69, looked dapper in a classic tuxedo. The veteran actor flashed his trademark grin alongside his younger on-screen love interest, the 28-year-old Qualley.
Qualley, the daughter of Andie MacDowell, has been earning raves for her breakout performance in the psychological thriller. She stunned in a pretty white and pink dress with finely embroidered designs and feathers along the bottom edge.
French director Fargeat, who turned heads in a pale pink dress, rounded out the film’s glamorous quartet.

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

Theaters are in a slump longer than they should be. The last five weekends averaged about $70 million total, while in 2019, the same five weekends with lower ticket prices averaged $190 million. That means success in VOD revenue is all that more important for studios. Even so, on the two top 10 lists from iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), half the slots are taken by companies other than the usual top five.
Results overall reflect the cutback in releases due to last year’s strikes, some longer windows for bigger-grossing studio releases, and, in most cases, a weaker response to other films that made little theatrical impact. All that made it easy for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), by far the year’s biggest hit, to repeat as #1 on both charts for the third week. And that’s with a higher price than usual.

Who doesn’t love an underdog story in sports, especially if it’s based on true historical accounts? In the 1950s, five young Mexican-American boys made history with golf clubs in their hands. Julio Quintana’s docudrama The Long Game talks about the racial discrimination Mexican-Americans faced in the last century and how a group of caddies earned the respect their community deserved.
