In director Mark Jenkin’s new Cornish folk horror film Enys Men, pronounced “Ennis Mane,” routine is unsettling. Set in 1973 on the uninhabited, eponymous “Stone Island” — as translated from Cornish — each day a nameless Volunteer (played by Mary Woodvine) starts up a generator, makes tea, checks wildflowers, measures soil temperature, and drops a stone in a mine shaft as she listens to hear it drop below. Then she records “No change” in a journal. But then things do begin to change.
The concept of time begins to fluctuate, even from the film’s early moments for the very observant viewer. Though she is meant to be on the island alone, she begins to encounter, and interact with, either strange visitors, or phantoms. Then there are the lichens. The composite organism appears on the flowers, and begins to appear on her own body. This all takes place as a large stone...

Mubi also reveals ’Portrait Of A Lady On Fire’ has become its most-viewed film in the UK to date.
Corneliu Porumboiu’s The Whistlers topped UK streaming platform Curzon Home Cinema’s (Chc) most-watched films over the weekend, after bypassing a theatrical release due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The Romanian crime thriller, which debuted in competition at Cannes last year, was originally due to receive a UK day-and-date release on June 26 via Curzon. But ongoing cinema closures meant the film launched exclusively on Chc on May 8, seven weeks early, and performed strongly as audiences look to streaming platforms for new titles during lockdown.

Festival in Wroclaw was due to launch in late July.
The 20th New Horizons International Film Festival has been postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic but plans are underway to keep its industry events on the calendar.

It marks the first time since the festival began in 2001 that New Horizons will not take place.

(L-r) Dop Ben Nott, Kriv Stenders and Jamie Leslie.
Friends and colleagues have paid tribute to film and TV first assistant director Jamie Leslie, who died on Friday from cancer. He was 62.
His final film in a distinguished 38-year career was Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.
“Not only was he an industry legend but he was an incredible mentor for me and a huge reason that film came to be,” Stenders says.
“Jamie came on early in pre-production when the film was teetering on the edge of an abyss. We weren’t bonded, we lost $2 million two weeks before shooting, we had no tanks, choppers or guns and we were running on fumes longer than I ever thought was humanly possible.
“But never once did he waver. He was my rock and every hour, every day we just worked the problem, until there was the next one.

Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” continued its run of top critics’ honors this season, scooping the Film of the Year and Director of the Year awards at the London Film Critics’ Circle kudos ceremony this evening. The victory puts extra wind in the sails of the South Korean phenomenon as it heads into the final stretch of awards season, with the BAFTAs delivering their verdict on Sunday.
Other multiple winners at the black-tie ceremony, voted on by the UK’s most high-profile critics’ group, were “Marriage Story,” recognized for Noah Baumbach’s screenplay and Laura Dern’s supporting performance, and Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir.” A melancholy memory piece inspired by the director’s film school days, Hogg’s film was named British/Irish Film of the Year, while its 22-year-old leading lady, Honor Swinton Byrne, won Young British/Irish Performer of the Year. According to our BAFTA racetrack odds, “1917” is the front-runner to win Best Picture from the British academy. We also think it’ll win the award for Best British Film, which is awarded to movies with significant contributions from British filmmakers. Can it really take both prizes? Only two films have doubled up since Best British Film was reintroduced in 1992.
Best British Film was first handed out in 1947 but was discontinued in 1968. In those first 21 years there were eight films that won both awards: “The Sound Barrier” (1952), “Richard III” (1955), “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957; also Best Picture Oscar), “Room at the Top” (1958), “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962; also Best Picture Oscar), “Tom Jones” (1963; also Best Picture Oscar), “Dr. Strangelove” (1965); and “A Man for All Seasons” (1967; also 1966 Best Picture Oscar).

Writer-director Mark Jenkin, whose feature debut “Bait” was nominated for two BAFTAs last week, has set his next project, “Enys Men” (“Stone Island”), with Film4.
Jenkin will direct from his own script. Denzil Monk is producing for Bosena. Johnny Fewings is executive producing, with Kate Byers and Linn Waite as associate producers. Film4 will co-finance the film, with senior commissioning executive Lauren Dark overseeing late stage development and production, alongside further development and production support from Falmouth University’s Sound Image Cinema Lab.
Set on a mysterious island crossed by leylines and timelines, with only an ancient standing stone for company, “Enys Men” is the story of a woman haunted by echoes of both the past and the future. Billed as an “ecosophical horror,” the film is expected to shoot in and around Cornwall in May 2020.

The horror film is planning to shoot in Cornwall in May this year. Film4 is co-financing, with senior commissioning executive Lauren Dark overseeing late stage development and production.

“Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “The Irishman” have come out on top in the nominations for the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television’s Film Awards.
“Joker” had 11 noms, and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman” scored 10 noms apiece. Off the back of its Globes success, “1917” landed nine.
BAFTA was quickly criticized on social channels for an overwhelmingly white set of nominees. Only white actors were nominated in the supporting and main categories. “Film is an incredible medium to tell the stories of our society and our world, but we need people of all backgrounds to be working in the industry to enable us to do that,” BAFTA chief Amanda Berry told the BBC. “If you look at the number of female noms this year it’s well over a third, well up from what it was, say, two years ago, but it’s still not good enough.

Following our top 50 films of 2019, we’re sharing personal top 10 lists from our contributors. Check out the latest below and see our complete year-end coverage here.
Arguably the defining film discourse this year was ignited when Martin Scorsese compared Marvel movies to theme parks. Fans got defensive, which is understandable given the passionate, apparently inexhaustible love for Iron Man & Co. But when you take a look at the box office receipts of 2019, you realize it’s the moviegoers of this world who seem to have decided (with their wallets) that everything else they find at the cinemas are not movies.
This is not to suggest that no non-Marvel films did well financially. But that is becoming more and more the exception and the general consumer preference has gotten so lopsided it’s hard not to read it as a categorical rejection of anything original, unfamiliar, not based on pre-existing IP.

Ahead of its full slate of nominations next month, BAFTA has unveiled the 10 short-listed films that will compete in the category of outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.
The nominated works include “For Sama,” a portrait of a Syrian mother’s experience of her country’s civil war, and “Blue Story,” the story of two youths caught up in a South London gang war. “For Sama,” co-directed by Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts, recently cleaned up at the British Independent Film Awards, winning the prize for best British independent film, while “Blue Story,” the directorial debut of YouTube rap star Rapman, has been in the news because of some theaters’ temporary decision to yank the film because of violence surrounding its screenings.
Other short-listed titles include “Maiden,” director Alex Holmes’ documentary about an all-female crew on an around-the-world yacht race, and “The Party’s Just Beginning” from writer-director Karen Gillan,...
