Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

An interesting sub-genre called the Weird West has been around longer than most people think, and certainly Cowboys & Aliens won’t be the last, but it might be one of the more successful film mash-ups in the rarely talked about genre. Who doesn’t appreciate a good ol fashion monster smackdown? Roger Corman certainly does. The prolific producer’s latest is “Dinocroc vs. Supergator”, which, as you might have guessed, pits a Dinocroc against a Supergator. Two enters, but only one leaves! Or some such. 'Cowboys & Aliens' has to be one of the better movie titles to come down the pike in quite a while, hearkening back to a past era of genre exploitation ('Earth vs. the Flying Saucers') and mixed-genre mashups ('Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter' and 'Billy the Kid vs. Dracula').

But titles alone don't make the movie. That's up to the directors and stars, something 'Cowboy's & Aliens' has in spades: There's hip director Jon Favreau and an all-star cast including Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Walton Goggins, Keith Carradine and Adam Beach.

The film -- about aliens invading the Earth in 1873, with only ragtag cowboys and Apaches standing in their way -- has been getting a lot of buzz, to say the least and, now that its release date of July 29 is fast-approaching, DreamWorks/Universal has released a new trailer.

The resuscitation of the classic western genre seems to occur whenever it's fused with another genre, producing dissonant hybrids, intriguing for their anachronistic elements. These hybrids seem to negate the threat mumbled through clenched teeth that, "There's just not room enough for both of us in this here town." Whereas with Cowboys & Aliens Jon Favreau has pursued the "science fiction western"--following on the outlaw trail of such steampunk narratives as Wild Wild West (1999), Back to the Future III (1990) and the ridiculous but oddly entertaining The Valley of Gwangi (1969)--the category of the "weird west" is even richer in representation, ranging from Billy the Kid vs. Dracula and Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter (both released in 1966), through Ravenous (1999), The Burrowers...

Edward Cullen is without question the most iconic movie vampire of the 2000s. Critics cannot argue with that (go ahead, try to argue, critics; I’ll wait). However, many take issue with “The Twilight Saga’s” portrayal of vampires, complaining that it breaks many of the genre’s ”rules.”

While it’s true, does that really matter since it’s all fiction, anyway? And aren’t rules, as they say, meant to be broken? (Imagine if Batman still looked like this.) The answer depends on whom you ask.

Quick, name a good horror/Western. It’s a tough ask; from Billy The Kid Vs. Dracula to Sundown: The Vampire In Retreat to this year’s Jonah Hex debacle—too many blanks and too few bullets. As such, few would argue that author Joe R. Lansdale’s straightforward 1986 novella Dead In The West has retained this particular mashup’s championship belt for a 25-year reign, although it must be conceded that the quality of the intervening challengers has been wobblier than a three-legged horse.

No doubt looking to capitalize on the burgeoning trend of melding classic literature and historical figures with horror (i.e., Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), now America's 32nd President will be getting in on the monster fighting action in Fdr: American Badass.

Actor Garrett Brawith will make his directorial debut helming this rewriting of history from comedy writer Ross Patterson that sees Franklin Delano Roosevelt slaying werewolves, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito with his weaponized custom wheelchair. Shooting of Fdr: American Badass begins in December.

Makes you wonder where this trend will go next. Teddy Roosevelt hunting Sasquatch? Ben Franklin reimagined as Dr. Frankenstein? Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn rafting the Mississippi River fighting a Great White Shark? Billy the Kid vs. Dracula?

Oh, right, they've already done that last one.
