You’ll have to excuse me. Lately I’ve been gravitating towards a particular corner of the genre room, one in which a lot of films clamor for space and I don’t always recognize the labels. Brides of Blood (1968) is in that corner, one in which Filipino exploitation meets old fashioned horror tropes to the advantage of both.
Released at the end of May stateside by the Philippines' own Hemisphere Pictures, Brides of Blood did well for the company in drive-ins everywhere - well enough that two more sequels followed, Mad Doctor of Blood Island (also ‘68) and Beast of Blood (1970). But Brides is actually the second in what came to be known as the Blood Island series; this was preceded by Terror is a Man (1959) almost ten years prior.
Rudimentary knowledge for some, no doubt; but I’m a Blood Island virgin you see, and my late arrival to...

When it comes to drive-in grindcore horror fare, there are few titles that evoke such strong memories and associations as the Blood Island films, which began in 1959’s Terror is a Man, aka Blood Creature, and continued with three yearly releases from 1968 through 1970 in the forms of Brides of Blood, Mad Doctor of […]

Before Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Herbert West, otherwise known as Re-Animator, there was Mad Doctor of Blood Island and Beast of Blood! The time has come to revive the franchise that influenced them all. The Beasts of Blood are coming back to the Big Screen.
The Blood Island films are iconic as the original drive-in grindcore B-Movie Monster archetypes. They consist of Terror is a Man aka Blood Creature (1959); Brides of Blood (1968); Mad Doctor of Blood Island (1969); and Beast of Blood (1970).
The revival of these Drive-In Grindhouse classics will kick off a year-long, nation-wide tour and merchandising blitz for drive-in theatre and Tiki bar markets across the country, courtesy of Producer/ Promoter David Sehring of Drive-In-Sanity Films.
The Blood Island films will also be coming soon to Blu-ray for the first time from Severin Films beginning November 13th, 2018, featuring re-mastered 4K scans from recently discovered film elements.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more faithful adaptation of a property from one medium to another. Apart from the fact Penny Dreadful works incredibly well in comic book form anyway, having always been a very visual show, these issues could be happily used as the storyboards for the TV show. It obviously helps that one of the creative guiding lights of the sow, Chris King, is the writer and ‘show runner’ for this title. He does a superb job and, as a huge fan of the show, I couldn’t be more impressed with how this book has been planned and published.

This second story arc, which began last issue, has not disappointed and looks like keeping up the very impressive standard of the first arc. No treading water for this title, it’s always full speed ahead, with constant plot reveals, story developments and character introductions. As a fan of the show I wouldn’t have accepted a sub standard comic cash-in, but this exceeds even what I would have settled for. It has been, and is, the TV show in comic form.
This arc has so far seen Lucifer ascendant, Sir Malcolm dead, Ethan reunited with Lily/Brona, a resurrected Vanessa Ives who’s not quite herself, a kick ass Catriona, and a very mixed up Dorian Gray. Did I mention Victor Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll/ Lord Hyde, and Renfield are also pieces on the board too. Chris King...

The drive-in/grindhouse scene has lost a true legend as Filipino filmmaker Eddie Romero, creator of some of the most infamous films to ever shine on the sliver screen, passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 88.
The man's career spanned over 60 years, and in that time he turned out several vintage horror and exploitation flicks including The Mad Doctor of Blood Island in 1968, along with Beast of Blood and Brides of Blood. He also spent a great deal of time working with the legendary B-movie icon Roger Corman on other projects such as Black Mama, White Mama and The Twilight People.
We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest of condolences to Eddie's friends, family, and constituents. God bless you, brother, and thank you for always flying that glorious freak flag which in turn has brought a huge smile to so many faces over the years.

We're sad to report that celebrated Filipino filmmaker Eddie Romero, best known among horror & exploitation fans for the “Blood Island” horror film series and his work with Roger Corman on several Philippines-based movies, passed away yesterday at 88. According to his son, Romero had been hospitalized for much of this month and lapsed into a coma shortly before his death. Romero was a highly honored filmmaker in the Philippines, and was awarded the title of National Artist for Cinema and Broadcast Arts in 2003. Over a sixty-year career, he has directed many acclaimed films in his native country, but fans of vintage horror and exploitation cinema remember him most fondly for the gory “Blood Island” series, which began with the surprise hit Mad Doctor of Blood Island in 1968, and included the sequels Beast of Blood and Brides of Blood; he's also noted for his '70s film collaborations with B-movie icon Roger Corman,...

Eddie Romero dies: Filipino filmmaker best known for his exploitation horror and action movies Eddie Romero, one of most best-known Filipino filmmakers, died of prostate cancer on Tuesday, May 28. Romero was 88. Named a National Artist of the Philippines in 2003, Romero (born on July 7, 1924, in Dumaguete City) began his film career in the late ’40s, when The Philippines were still recovering from the devastation of World War II. His international reputation rests chiefly on his low-budget horror and action movies; usually Filipino / American co-productions made in collaboration with actor-producer John Ashley. Among those are the the horror sci-fier Brides of Blood (1968), featuring veteran Kent Taylor, Beverly Powers, tropical-island natives, and radioactively mutated human-eating plants; Beast of Blood (1971), featuring John Ashley and a headless monster; The Twilight People (1972), which has no connection to either Stephenie Meyer or the Cullen Clan — in the film, reminiscent of Erle C. Kenton’s Island of Lost Souls...

"Are you ready to watch a really s--ty movie?" So asked Joel Hodgson, creator and original host of Mystery Science Theater 3000, before a packed Saturday-night house at New York City's Nokia Theatre. The occasion: a live performance of Cinematic Titanic, his MST3K follow-up project with fellow castaways from the Satellite of Love. Primed after a decade of Mst deprivation, the 2,100-strong crowd roared its assent. Before Hodgson came on stage to announce the celluloid craptacular du jour, the night's proceedings kicked off with Mary Jo Pehl, f.k.a. Pearl Forrester, who introduced Ct's guest Mc, David "Gruber" Allen.

Well, we've gone from the famine of last week to a veritable feast of DVD and Blu-ray offerings on home video this week. There's definitely something for everyone: Nazi zombies in Dead Snow, freaks galore in The Vampire's Assistant, beautiful people getting hacked and slashed in Sorority Row, and buttons being pushed in The Box.
In addition, two old favorites -- Ichi the Killer and The Crazies -- are bowing on Blu-ray. Throw in some good old-fashioned British Noir, a Ted Mikels collection, Eliza Dushku in Open Graves, the supernaturally infused Robin Hood tale Beyond Sherwood Forest, and a couple of old gems like Brides of Blood and Satan's Sadists from the late 1960's, and you'll see why we're calling February 23rd a "feast". And honestly, that's just the tip of the iceberg!
