John Lithgow has revealed the story that changed his mind about one of his teen movies. Lithgow is a versatile actor who has held many roles in iconic film and television projects since he began his onscreen career in the 1970s. Jeannot Szwarc, who has died aged 85, directed Jaws 2 (1978), Supergirl (1984) and Santa Claus: The Movie (1985). This could be described as a hat-trick, but only if one were talking about own goals.

Though Szwarc was a successful television director of more than 50 years’ standing, with multiple episodes under his belt of series such as Kojak and The Rockford Files in the 1970s and Ally McBeal and Grey’s Anatomy in this century, his film career was another matter.

Jeannot Szwarc, known in part for directing the first sequel to Steven Spielberg's Jaws along with Helen Slater's Supergirl movie, has passed away. He was 87 years old.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Szwarc died on Tuesday due to respiratory failure while at Central Hospital in Loches, France. Jane Seymour, sho co-starred with Superman actor Christopher Reeve in Szwarc's 1980 film Somewhere in Time, also commented on the filmmaker's passing with a statement shared on social media.

“Jeannot Szwarc was not just a brilliant director but a kind and generous soul,” she Seymour said. “He gifted us many timeless stories, including Somewhere in Time, a film that changed my life forever. May his memory be a blessing, and may his artistry live on in our hearts.”

Szwarc died Tuesday of respiratory failure at Central Hospital in Loches, France, his son Sacha Szwarc, a film editor, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Jane Seymour, who starred alongside Christopher Reeve in the 1980 time-traveling romantic fantasy Somewhere in Time, said on Facebook that the role changed her career.

“Jeannot Szwarc was not just a brilliant director but a kind and generous soul,” she wrote. “He gifted us many timeless stories, including Somewhere in Time, a film that changed my life forever. May his memory be a blessing, and may his artistry live on in our hearts.”

His other film credits included the Martin Sheen-starring Enigma (1982), the Helen Slater-starring Supergirl (1984) and Santa Claus (1985), starring David Huddleston and Dudley Moore.

Understandably, the film world is mourning the loss overnight of one of its true greats, David Lynch. Lost a little though is that a fine genre director also passed away.

French director Jeannot Szwarc died on Wednesday 15th January, it was announced, at the age of 85.

Born in Paris, Swarc moved to America and cut his teeth on popular television shows such as Kojak and The Rockford Files. But for the movie-going generation of the 1970s and 1980s, it was his feature films that drew the most attention.

His big break was arguably 1978’s Jaws 2 (pictured), getting the nod when Steven Spielberg declined the opportunity to return to the sequel (and after original director John Hancock was fired). Perhaps his most acclaimed American film followed, 1980’s Somewhere In Time, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.

Jeannot Szwarc, the French filmmaker best known as the director of the science fiction romantic drama “Somewhere in Time” (1980), “Jaws 2” (1978) and “Supergirl” (1984), died Thursday. He was 85.

His death was announced by actress Jane Seymour, who co-starred with Christopher Reeve in “Somewhere in Time.” On Instagram, Seymour wrote, “Today, we say goodbye to a true visionary. Among Szwarc’s other feature films are the Michael Crichton thriller “Extreme Close-Up” (1973), “Santa Claus: The Movie” (1985) and the 1996 family film “Hercule et Sherlock.”

He also had a long and prolific career directing for American television, beginning in the 1960s with episodes of “Ironside” and “It Takes a Thief.

’Twas the weekend before Christmas… With the holiday season upon us, many of us are starting to revisit some of our of Christmas favourites. I actually went to see a 4K re-release of the original Black Christmas last night here in Montreal. Known for his larger-than-life roles and box office dominance, Dwayne Johnson is likely headed toward another cinematic misstep with his upcoming Christmas action-comedy Red One. Starring The Rock alongside Chris Evans, the film promises a festive adventure as an E.L.F. operative and a bounty hunter join forces to find Santa Claus and save Christmas.

Despite its unique premise and star-studded cast, early reviews and box office projections suggest that Johnson’s latest action comedy might struggle to jingle the box office bells or impress critics.

Could Red One be Another Setback For Dwayne Johnson?

Dwayne Johnson is taking on the role of Callum Drift, the head of North Pole security for Santa Claus, in his latest holiday action-comedy, Red One. The film follows him teaming up with a tracker and bounty hunter, Jack O’Malley, to rescue the kidnapped Santa Claus and save Christmas.

Unlike Superman and Superman II, Superman III didn’t even bother teasing the next installment in the franchise. Really, by the time that movie’s end credits hit, did anyone even want another entry? Hadn’t the Salkinds done enough damage to the Man of Steel? And yet, as we all know, a fourth installment in the Superman series did indeed hit theaters…with a nearly unmatched thud.

If you remember from our previous instalment of What Happened to This Movie?!, Superman III was plagued with all sorts of problems both on and off the screen. So what happened this time around? Turns out, the series would be facing its greatest battles yet, with the rights being passed to another studio, its star only signing on so he could finance another movie altogether and the budget getting chopped in more than half!

Genre filmmaking legend John Carpenter has recently taken to Letterboxd to write some frank reviews of his own movies and others. The results are incredible.

Having made some of the greatest genre movies ever made, John Carpenter has quite deservedly shifted down a gear or two over the past decade or so. These days, he’s keeping himself busy with his music, playing videogames (he really loves Fallout 76), holding the occasional mercurial interview with the press – and, as it turns out, writing the odd review on Letterboxd.

Brilliantly, as spotted by Twitter’s Haunted Hippie (via our own John Moore), Carpenter has even cast his jaded eye over his own movies. Take Halloween II, for example, which he’s long admitted he wrote for the money. Here’s his Letterboxd review:

Bat Boy, the bizarre half-bat, half-boy featured in several Weekly World News stories, is finally heading to the small screen. A television series based on Bat Boy is now in development for a streaming release on Netflix.

Per Deadline, the Bat Boy show will be a live-action series that will bring the fictitious creature from the famous tabloid to life. The project is getting developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Joe Tracz. The project is reportedly in development with an original concept that won't be borrowing any ideas from the previous Off-Broadway show, Bat Boy: The Musical, which debuted in 1997.

The streaming service is ready to help fans celebrate the most wonderful time of the year by presenting an eclectic mix of television episodes, Christmas classics and other holiday-based films in what the streamer is touting as “Christmas Cheer, Some Holiday Fear, and Classic Holiday Fun.” The festivities are a part of 20 on 20: Celebrating 20 Years of Shout! Some movies from our childhood fail to live up to the size of their memory, but rarely, we rediscover an old movie we always knew was ugly and find it still ugly but also shocking or revelatory. Santa Claus: The Movie is one such secretly subtextual movie. The first act is sort of incredible, with ‘80s movie magic, including matte paintings of the North Pole, massive sets for the castle-like home of the elves, and reindeer puppets that still hold up to today’s effects. Acts two and three turn into a story about one of the elves who runs away, and it becomes Dudley Moore: The Movie.

Though Hulu might not be the first streaming platform audiences would think of when it comes to Christmas movies, it holds its own against some of the bigger services.
