Jonas Govaerts's Cub (or Welp) might just be the nastiest backwoods slasher to come creeping out of Belgium since The Ordeal by Fabrice Du Welz traumatized moviegoers in 2004. In Govaert's 2014 directorial debut, a group of unfortunate cub scouts find themselves in the crosshairs of a demented father/son duo with a proclivity for corpse hoarding and hunting humans in the French countryside. Viewers expecting a slasher flick in a similar vein to Friday the 13th need to look elsewhere. Govaerts’s Cub is a brutally original movie with a clear identity. Yes, there are a ton of little nods to Sleepaway Camp, The Final Terror, and Just Before Dawn scattered throughout, but Cub’s direction and writing are a cut above these films. The director never resorts to the tactics we’ve come to expect from these slashers. The first thing that marks a significant departure is that he...

This holiday season’s release of Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is cause for celebration amongst slasher fans. It’s been a hot minute since mainstream horror audiences have been able to watch a wide-release slasher that feels gruesomely throwback *and* is based on a wholly original concept. Thanksgiving is a contemporary reinterpretation of cheesy 80s midnighters about masked killers and juicy, rubbery effects that hoists holiday horror back into the limelight. It’s also fair to speculate how Thanksgiving signals a possible shift in overall genre trends, but labeling Thanksgiving as the rebirth of the slasher subgenre is a bit misleading. Roth’s ooey-gooey ode to holiday horror with all the trimmings certainly sticks out in today’s horror landscape, but that’s only on surface-level evaluations.
Heck, it wasn’t even the only holiday-themed slasher in theaters this season.

Does TV news have a future outside of the existing television ecosystem? The question is top of mind for news executives as the entertainment world dramatically shifts, with linear TV channels facing steady decline and streaming on the rise.
In his 1991 book Three Blind Mice, Ken Auletta detailed how the rise of cable TV, and specifically CNN and its coverage of the Gulf War, threw the network news divisions at ABC, NBC and CBS into chaos. “Instantly, the public glimpsed the cataclysmic changes in the television industry,” Auletta wrote. “Viewers realized that CNN, not the three networks, was the ...

"Jeepers!" Screen Media has unveiled an early teaser trailer for a horror movie debuting in 2022 - Jeepers Creepers: Reborn. After three films for the original series – the first Jeepers Creepers was in 2001, and Jeepers Creepers 3 came out in 2017 – they're throwing things out and rebooting this one. I know there are many films of the original film, and The Creeper is one mean mofo. But is this going to be any good? Forced to travel with her boyfriend to the Horror Hounds festival, Laine begins to experience premonitions about with the urban myth of "The Creeper". Laine believes that something supernatural has been summoned – and that she is at the center of it all. This new horror stars Sydney Craven as Laine, Imran Adams as her boyfriend Chase, plus Ocean Navarro, Matt Barkley, Alexander Halsall, Jodie McMullen, Georgia Goodman, & Jarreau Benjamin. When it comes to writing a script, not every method is the same. Some choose isolation in order to get the script done, while others throw themselves into research to make their work authentic. Kiell Smith-Bynoe isn’t much of a Christmas person. “I don’t like the whole build-up and I despise the idea of people putting up their Christmas trees on the 1st of November. I’m horribly against it!” he tells Den of Geek over the phone. “If that makes some people happy then fine, but no, I’m not really a Christmas guy at all.”
That didn’t stop him from feeling a touch of the Christmas spirit when filming the Ghosts special in February this year. “That actually felt very festive. It really had that Christmas feel. As well as the decorations, they added in some scents that made the set smell really Christmassy.” Even the most tinsel-averse can be turned by a cinnamon and gingerbread candle.

Exploitation films were thriving in the ‘70s, and everything was excess. Why have one naked woman when you could have four, or settle for one onscreen flaying when clearly several are in order? Maybe watching Mansion of the Doomed (1976) you’d be content with a single case of eye transplant surgery instead of the six offered? Well, you’d be wrong. This is a film that leans heavy on the nihilism and nastiness of the times, with nary an existential answer yet plenty to talk about.
Doomed seems to be the key word in the title that permeates nearly every frame; other titles include Eyes, Massacre Mansion, and The Terror of Dr. Chaney, with the latter perhaps being the most apropos considering the moral dilemma lies completely on his shoulders. But Mansion of the Doomed works because, well, that mansion is packed with the doomed, protags and antags alike.

Once loaded with connotations of exoticism and movie-star glamor, Ava now ranks annually among the most popular girls’ names in America, and it seems its ubiquity is extending to the film world: Tate Taylor’s female-starring shoot-’em-up “Ava” is the third film bearing that title to crop up in as many years. It, too, has the air of something that may once have been unusual in conception only to emerge as rather generic. Built around Jessica Chastain as an ice-cool, globe-trotting assassin facing a tangle of personal and professional challenges when she returns home to Boston, the film provides than a major star vehicle.
At the very least, you’d probably tune in to the second episode — if only to further indulge the exertions of a cast way above the pay grade of this B-list material. Where else are you going to find bloody, athletic scenes of hand-to-hand combat between Chastain and Joan Chen,...

Voltage Pictures has revealed the trailer for Ava. This is a new action/thriller that seemingly has quite a bit going for it. First off, it stars Jessica Chastain leading an A-list cast. She is also reuniting with director Tate Taylor, with the two previously collaborating on The Help. But this is a far cry from their previous effort, as Chastian is going full-on John Wick this time around.
The trailer kicks off with Jessica Chastain carrying out a hit. She's clearly good at her job but there is conflict brewing, as she is viewed as a liability by one of her associates. Things devolve and Ava winds up on the run from a sizable force after a contract is put out on her. While there are certainly some major John Wick beats here, and Common even shows up. But stylistically it is quite different than the action flicks led by Keanu Reeves.

Dystopia! What a place to be. Well, except when people are mulched to feed an over populated society (Soylent Green) or killed at the age of 30 to control it (Logan’s Run); and in the case of Turkey Shoot (1982), hunted for sport by society’s elite. Come to think of it, Dystopia is kind of a bummer.
Released in its native Australia in October, Turkey Shoot wouldn’t see the light of day in the U.S. until September of ’83 under the title Escape 2000. Both titles work; the former playing into the more lurid elements, while the latter highlights the cut rate sci-fi angle. And it’s the swirling combination of the two that gives this sucker its punch. Turkey Shoot is A class exploitation with a down under smile.

What is Shelf Life? I recently moved into a new apartment, which means I had to box my entire movie collection. Now I’m trying to figure out how much of my physical media actually fits here. Each and every title is now up for grabs, new or old, and it’s time to decide what goes on the shelf and what just plain goes. Title: The Final Terror Year: 1983 Director: Andrew Davis Screenwriter: Jon George & Neill D. Hicks and Ronald Shusett Format: Blu-ray/DVD combo pack Purchased Or Sent: Sent. What Is It? Deliverance The 13th. Filled with actors you vaguely recognize when they were young (including Daryl Hannah, Joe Pantoliano, Rachel Ward, and Adrian Zmed), this is a fairly dull slasher entry that leans heavily on what must have already been cliches when they did them, but which are almost unbearable to sit through at this point. Welcome Back to The Stack Holiday Gift Guide. We are approaching the end of our look at the magnificent 2014 output of Scream Factory with only one more episode to go after this one. Legend of Hell House (1973) has long been considered the poor man's The Haunting (1963) and while there is some truth in that The Haunting is clearly the superior film in most ways, that doesn't detract from the very real intensity of Hell House. The film looks good all spruced up for Blu-ray and now might be a good time for people to reconsider whether or not they think it deserves a higher place in the haunted house hall of fame. The Final Terror is also a film that should get some reappraisal....

The Final Terror is the latest 80’s slasher to be resurrected by the fine folks at Scream Factory, who give the modest cult classic a really well done high definition presentation. And while they weren’t able to restore the original film negative for The Final Terror, the fact that Scream Factory went to such great lengths to locate the next best thing (original prints from private collectors) proves why they continue to kick all kinds of ass.
The Final Terror follows a group of horn-dog fire rangers and their “special lady friends” as they head deep into the forest for a day of work and, of course, a little hanky panky (this is a slasher movie, after all). During their outing, all kinds of weird crap begins happening- people go missing, severed limbs are discovered in an ramshackled cabin- which forces the friends to come together and figure out...

This is a somewhat light week for Blu-ray releases, as far as quantity goes. In regards to quality, though, it is a pretty spectacular week. We have a Scream Factory release of a film once thought to be lost forever, and one of the most anticipated releases from Grindhouse since they started releasing Blu-ray. Also worth noting are releases of Afflicted by Sony, which is an eerily effective found-footage vampire film, and the complete first season of SyFy’s original show Helix. I realize that there are probably other titles hitting the shelves today, but this is both what I feel is worthy of your dollars, and the titles that I was sent to talk to you about. The summer releases are starting to heat up, and next week is pretty great as well.

Last year at San Diego Comic Con, Scream Factory announced that they would be putting out Clive Barker’s 1990 film Nightbreed on Blu-Ray. Let’s be honest, it rocked horror fans’ socks off. A year later, Scream Factory announces the details about the release of two editions and some of those same fans are complaining about the price tag for the limited edition. I just want to preface this article with the fact that this knowledge that I have gained over the years of not only being a fan of the genre but dealing with studios and knowing some of the ins-and-outs of home media distribution. I don’t work in the industry, I just deal with it for this site and with my own local theatrical program, Late Nite Grindhouse. So, none of this is inside information with Scream Factory and while I have reviewed one product they have sent me,...

Any week that includes a Scream Factory release could be considered a good week. This particular Scream factory release is of a film that has long eluded me. I’ve been aware of its existence, but never managed to actually acquire and consume it. Now that I’ve had that chance, I wish I had tracked it down before, so that I would have a frame of reference to compare the video and audio presentations to. From what I understand, The Final Terror was considered a “lost” film, and since it was a bucket list title, Scream Factory acquired several different sources in order to spruce it up, and splice together a master cut of the film. The Final Terror is not going to appeal to everyone, as in a lot of ways, it very much shows its age. However, if you like classic horror cinema – especially from the eighties...

The Weekend Watch is an open thread where you can share what you’ve recently watched, offer suggestions on movies and TV shows we should check out (or warnings about stuff to avoid) and discover queue-filling goodies from other Fsr readers. The comments section awaits. I’ll get the ball rolling with the movies/TV my eyeballs took in this weekend. Try, for a second, to imagine a world where the director of The Fugitive (Andrew Davis) made a film that starred Rachel Ward, Daryl Hannah, Joe Pantoliano *and* Adrian Zmed. I know. It sounds like pure fantasy. But I’m here to tell you it’s real. The Final Terror is an early ’80s “killer in the woods” flick that used to be played regularly on HBO, but I hadn’t seen it in decades. Does The Final Terror Have the Goods Out in the Woods?
Hey creeps, I just sat down with Scream Factory’s Blu-ray of The Final Terror, and I feel like it’s my civic duty to get something out in the open right from the start. Much like the lies propagated by The Neverending Story (which did indeed end after a paltry 90 minutes!) before it, The Final Terror is not what the title proclaims. I mean, there have been like hundreds of horror films made after this movie came out (in 1983)—some even have “terror” in the title!
