Rip Bruce French

Soap opera veteran Bruce French has passed away at the age of 79. Best known for his Passions character, playing Father Lonigan on the daytime drama, The Hollywood Reporter has noted the actor died this past Friday, in L.A. due to Alzheimer’s complications. French was diagnosed with the condition four years ago.

French was married to Days of Our Lives alum Eileen Barnett (ex-Brooke Hamilton). The two were wed on January 20, 1991.

The actor was born in Reinbeck, Iowa on July 4, 1945, and earned a degree from the University of Iowa. French also served in the U.S. Army and fought in the Vietnam War. In addition, he studied acting at The University Tisch School of the Arts in New York.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that French passed away on Friday in Los Angeles due to complications from Alzheimer’s. He was diagnosed with the disease four years ago. French was born on July 4, 1945, in Reinbeck, Iowa. He earned a degree from the University of Iowa, and he served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Finally, French studied acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

On Passions, French portrayed the blind Father Lonigan for the show’s entire nine seasons from 1999 to 2008. On the soap, baddie Alistair Crane (David Bailey; John Reilly) caused the Father to lose his sight.

He began his acting career in 1972 in the off-Broadway play, The Shadow of a Gunman.

Bruce French, the dependable character actor who did lots of work for the theater and portrayed Father Lonigan, the blind priest on the soap opera Passions who somehow could sense that evil was imminent, has died. He was 79.

French died Friday in Los Angeles of complications from Alzheimer’s, his wife of 34 years, longtime Days of Our Lives actress Eileen Barnett, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The Iowa native, who has more than 150 acting credits on IMDb, guest-starred for David E. Kelley on such shows as L.A. Law, Picket Fences, Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Public and Boston Legal, and he appeared on three Star Trek series — The Next Generation, Voyager and Enterprise — and in the 1998 film Star Trek: Insurrection.

Plus, he played the wealthy neighbor of Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver’s shifty characters on both seasons of the 2007-08 FX drama The Riches.

For us 90s kids, Dick Tracy was an interesting monster of a movie. It seemed to take a lot of cues from Tim Burton’s Batman, which was released the previous summer, but it definitely had a distinct voice of its own. Dick Tracy was another classic pulp adaptation of an urban enforcer that had very dynamic visuals and an over-the-top rogues gallery. It even sported a score by Danny Elfman, which would have his signature atmospheric sound. The movie would introduce a generation of young audiences to the 1930’s film noir/ detective movie genre. Additionally, the movie brought back Warren Beatty after a three-year absence when his last film, 1987’s Ishtar, was a big flop. Having a star like Beatty in a big-budget franchise like this was an enormous asset for the re-budding intellectual property. And the star power wouldn’t even stop there.

Shannon Wilcox, a prolific actress who appeared in Dallas, several Garry Marshall films and dozens of other movies and TV shows, has died. She was 80.

A post today on Legacy.com said she died September 2 in Los Angeles.

Wilcox racked up more than 75 credits during her 45-year screen career. Her TV guest roles range from Hawaii Five-o, Cagney & Lacey, Magnum, P.I. and L.A. Law to NCIS, The Neighborhood and Grey’s Anatomy. Her many films include Marshall’s Frankie and Johnny, Exit to Eden, Dear God, The Other Sister, Raising Helen and The Princess Diaries and its sequel. Other films include Runaway Bride, Seven, For the Boys, Legal Eagles and playing the mother of Elisabeth Shue’s character in The Karate Kid.

Wilcox’s death was confirmed by her talent agent Peter Young.

Douglas C. Hart, an assistant camera operator on more than 50 feature films including Kramer vs. Kramer and such Woody Allen movies as Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Purple Rose of Cairo and Zelig, died Tuesday while under hospice care at an assisted living facility in New York City. As Top Gun: Maverick arrives in theaters this week, it will be almost 36 years exactly since the original Top Gun was released. That first movie became not only the biggest hit of 1986, but one of the signature films in the career of Tom Cruise and a permanent part of the cultural zeitgeist.

Inspired by an article called “Top Guns,” written by Ehud Yonay for the May 1983 issue of California magazine, the film detailed the lives of pilots at the Navy’s elite Fighter Weapons School (known as Topgun) in Miramar, California. Written for the screen by Jack Epps Jr. and the late Jim Cash, the Tony Scott-directed movie starred Cruise as Lt. Chicago – He helmed some of the most beloved comedies of the last three decades of the 20th Century, including “Meatballs,” “Stripes,” “Twins” “Kindergarten Cop” and of course “Ghostbusters” (and its sequel). Ivan Reitman passed away on February 12th, 2022. He was age 75.

Reitman was born in Czechoslovakia, and moved with his family to Canada as a child. He graduated from McMasters University (Ontario) with a degree in music, but he also produced and directed several short films while there. After working in television and as a producer for stage he moved into film production. After producing a couple films for director David Cronenberg, he caught his big break as the producer of “Animal House” in 1978.

In 1984, a film about blue-collar entrepreneurs fighting a war against government bureaucracy — and an omnipotent eldritch god — solidified Ivan Reitman’s cinematic legacy.

If there’s one film that Reitman, who died Saturday at the age of 75, will probably be remembered for, it’s “Ghostbusters” — the blockbuster adventures of four misfits that blurred the lines between broad comedy, monstrous horror and working-class heroism.

But while “Ghostbusters” may have been Reitman’s biggest financial success, it’s that particular blurring of the lines that was the filmmaker’s lifelong calling card. Reitman repeatedly told stories that precariously but impeccably elevated the humor and heart in practically every genre.

This week’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are a fun bunch, as we have a lot of great new movies to look forward to, as well as a ton of killer classic titles headed home to various formats. Lou Cutell, who played the “Assman” on Seinfeld and the rainbow-Mohawked Amazing Larry in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure among 100-plus TV and film credits spanning five decades, has died. He was 91.

His friend Mark Furman announced the news on social media but did not provide details.

“After 91 years, and a great life, my friend Lou Cutell went home,” Furman posted Sunday (see it below). “A film, theater and character actor. Big Larry in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Ass Man in Seinfeld, Abe in Grey’s Anatomy S12,E4. He took me to Lucille Ball’s house in 1986. Rest in peace Lou.”

Cutell might be most recognizable to TV fans for his one-off Seinfeld role as Dr. Howard Cooperman in the 1995 episode “The Fusilli Jerry.” It featured Kramer (Michael Richards) picking up his new license plates at the Dmv, only to find that they are someone else’s vanity plate that reads “Assman.

When Dick Tracy burst onto screens in June 1990, it was heralded as the heir to the previous summer’s comics-to-page blockbuster throne, Batman. While the Disney film boasted similar star power (Warren Beatty and Al Pacino), intricate production design that evoked both colorful Sunday comic strips and classic gangster films, and even a tie-in album by one of the biggest pop music stars of a generation (Madonna’s I’m Breathless), characters like Dick Tracy and Flattop were hardly the pop culture mainstays that Batman and the Joker were, even before that 1989 film revitalized their fortunes. Nevertheless, Dick Tracy made a box office splash (albeit not a Batman-sized one), and racked up three Oscars as well as nominations for Best Supporting Actor (for Al Pacino’s scenery-chewing turn as Big Boy Caprice), Cinematography, Costume Design, and Sound Design.

The Golden Globe and Tony-winning star passed away in New Haven, Connecticut from natural causes. It's a very sad day today as legendary actor Brian Dennehy, known for his memorable roles in movies like First Blood, Tommy Boy, and dozens of others, has reportedly passed away. Noah Baumbach might as well have named his latest feature “The (Harold) Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected, But Also Mostly About Harold),” because no matter how many stories unspool in the filmmaker’s latest tale of familial disaffection (and, occasionally, actual affection), each one spins firmly around Dustin Hoffman’s surly patriarch.

While Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” is cleverly divided up into a series of chapters, mostly following the middle-aged mishegoss of Harold’s sons Danny (Adam Sandler) and Matthew (Ben Stiller), it is Harold who looms largest.

The Gruff Patriarch

That he’s basically a bastard — or, to put it more kindly, definitely not a great dad — would be an easy out in any other film, a way to explain why the Meyerowitz kids are so screwy and sad. But Hoffman brings life and levity to Harold that pushes his performance into potential awards territory.

Actor Steven Hill  has died at age 94. Hill came to prominence in 1966 as the original star of the "Mission: Impossible" TV series. He played Dan Briggs, the head of the Impossible Mission Force, who led a select team of diverse members on highly dangerous espionage missions. Hill, who was an Orthodox Jew, found that the filming schedule conflicted with his religious obligations. He left the series after one season and was replaced by Peter Graves as Jim Phelps, who remained with the franchise henceforth. Hill retired from acting for almost a decade before returning to TV as District Attorney Adam Schiff on the popular NBC show "Law & Order". Ashton Kutcher’s 2004 movie The Butterfly Effect is still making ripples a decade later: The production company Benderspink filed a lawsuit Thursday claiming that it’s still owed shares of the film’s profits. The suit names FilmEngine, Highwire, Roulette, and Rhulen as the “interrelated film production companies” involved in the matter, THR reports.

Ivan Reitman's early comedies leaned heavily on the idea of the scruffy underdogs who managed to retain their personal quirks within systems designed to break them down. Whether it was the rowdy campers and counselors of "Meatballs" or the shabby soldiers of "Stripes" or the Ghostbusters, Reitman's movies seemed to celebrate these characters and the entire idea of rebellion. After those films, though, he became an A-list director whose movies seemed to lean on high concepts that were much less interesting. "Legal Eagles" and "Twins" were both dispiriting efforts that leaned heavily on movie star charisma in place of actual scripts and characters. In general, any film Reitman made with Arnold Schwarzenegger felt like a total refutation of the things that Reitman did well. The one bright spot in his post-"Ghostbusters" filmography was "Dave," which started as a sharp and funny script, and if "Draft Day" feels like any of his prior films,...

The "Psych" remake episode, "Cloudy ... With a Chance of Improvement," was a huge treat for long-time fans of the show. It took a so-so Season 1 episode and spruced up the plot a bit, plus brought back a cavalcade of "Psych" guest stars and fun references.

The Jackson Hale murder is still at the core of the episode, but this time, instead of a jealous production assistant, the murderer is a morning show anchor who thinks gigolo Jackson is sleeping with his wife -- and wannabe-weatherman Ruben Leonard gets caught in the crossfire.

Hollywoodnews.com: Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith may be carrying the baton for coarse, observational, sex-soaked comedy these days, but it was passed to them by Ivan Reitman.

And he wants it back.

Seriously, go back and watch Reitman’s early work, from “Cannibal Girls,” “Stripes” and “Meatballs,” and you’ll see the blueprint that Seth Rogen, Adam Sandler, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill and many more follow to this day. From there, Reitman moved on (and moved up) to “Ghostbusters,” “Legal Eagles,” “Kindergarten Cop” and “Dave.” A generation of classic comedies were born.

Now Reitman’s tackling a new generation, one that’s more frank with their sex talk (and more plugged in to the virtual community, where so much of that sex talk takes place).

We don’t cover computer games on HeyUGuys but we have some very good friends over at 7Outof10.co.uk who do! Tony Scott’s Top Gun movie has a new spin off computer game coming out called “Top Gun”!

Manny from 7Outof10.co.uk got to interview the Top Gun screenwriter Jack Epps Jr. and sicne he knows I’m a Jerry Bruckheimer (he produced Top Gun) nut, he asked if me if I’d like to contribute some questions which of course, I did!

At the time, would you have believed that Top Gun would still be loved 25 years after it was originally made?

When I first became inspired to write the movie I thought we had a unique visual world to write about.

A Single Man

On the posters and advertisements, it might seem like a dramatic romance between Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, but A Single Man is actually the story of a college professor struggling through life after the death of his partner (Matthew Goode). In his review, Eugene Novikov pointed out the high and low points of the film: "despite the shaky start, Ford finds an elegant, striking way of bringing this material to the screen. Much of A Single Man is an elegiac tone poem, rendered haunting by Ford's beautifully composed images, and propelled by a gorgeous, somewhat Philip Glass-like musical score by little-known Polish composer Abel Korzeniowski." Rent it on DVD or Blu-ray.

Brooklyn's Finest

Antoine Fuqua whips up a drama that digs into what happens when three New York City cops (Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Don Cheadle) are involved in a huge drug operation.

Hot Tub Time Machine opens this Friday. The high concept for this dude comedy? As you might suspect from the movie's title, a time traveling hot tub that sends John Cusack, Clark Duke, Craig Robinson, and Rob Corddry back to the year 1986.

The now 43-year-old Cusack has aged quite well, looking not much different than he did in 1986's Stand By Me. Which got us thinking: How have the other stars of 1986's most popular and enduring flicks (Top Gun, Ferris Beuller's Day Off, About Last Night...) held up? Who just needs to dip a toe in the water? And who would benefit from a long, deep soak?
