Earlier this year, a talented Lego designer presented their original concept for a 4,000+ piece set inspired by the many works of Studio Ghibli. With thousands of supporters now rallying behind the creator, an official Ghibli-inspired Lego set is one step closer to becoming reality.
"The World of Studio Ghibli," a Lego set inspired by several of studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki's films, is currently being featured on Lego Ideas -- a site where Lego fans can submit prototypes for official consideration by the Lego company. Originally posted on Feb. 27, 2025 by site member "Janrssx," the design features memorable scenes, architectural structures and characters from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Ponyo. On April 6, the set officially reached its target goal of 10,000 supporters, allowing it to progress to Lego's "review" phase.

Before he became known for Spirited Away and multiple Studio Ghibli films, Hayao Miyazaki made his directorial debut in 1978 with the anime series Future Boy Conan. The series has 26 episodes and is based on the 1970 novel The Incredible Tide. As Miyazaki's works continue to find love to this day, this series is finally making its way to streaming.
According to IndieWire, Future Boy Conan will be available to stream on RetroCrush this April. However, not all episodes will be available at once and will be released on a weekly basis. In addition, the show will be streamed on the Fast version of RetroCrush on April 20, 22, and 27 as part of its Hayao Miyazaki-themed marathons.
Future Boy Conan is a show about a boy named Conan, who was raised on an island by his grandfather in a post-apocalyptic world. Years later, he meets a girl named Lana, who was raised on another surviving island.

Before Hayao Miyazaki was a beloved film auteur responsible for classics like “Princess Mononoke” and new masterpieces like “The Boy and the Heron,” the Studio Ghibli co-founder was a veteran of the early Japanese TV anime industry, working as a storyboard and key animation artist for shows like “Lupin III.” And, while most call 1979’s Lupin film “The Castle of Cagliostro” Miyazaki’s directorial debut, the honor actually belongs to “Future Boy Conan,” a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series that ran for 26 episodes the year before. Now, that hidden gem of Miyazaki’s career will be available to stream in the United States for the first time ever.
IndieWire can exclusively reveal that “Future Boy Conan” will begin streaming this April on RetroCrush, a subscription service dedicated to classic anime. Roger Clark is well aware of what humanity and tragedy are; that is what Arthur Morgan, the character from Red Dead Redemption 2 he gave his voice, is about. The voiceover artist sensed something similar that’s depressing not just to him but to the entire community of artists who pour their hearts in for months, even years, to craft something: the AI trend that turns anything into Studio Ghibli’s in-house animated style images.

Hayao Miyazaki is a man of words and staunch ideas that have often stirred up controversy. He sure is the grumpy mastermind, but there’s one thing we know about him. And that is, he never backs down, especially when it comes to his movies.
For one thing, we know he isn’t merely an animator or a filmmaker; he is a storyteller and an auteur. His methods revolutionized the Japanese animation industry for decades and inspired a whole generation of filmmakers. And while there were inspirations and influences, he had rivals as well.

Studio Ghibli films come in a range of genres, sub-genres, and storytelling tones. Some are fairy tale retellings, others are inspired by historical epochs, contemporary romance manga, and magical realism novels. Plot twists come in various forms, depending on the tale, and Ghibli films master each sort of plot twist it includes.
Films like Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away are beautifully written and layered in meaning. They're worth watching over and over, even if the audience knows exactly what is coming next. Some plot points are so layered with nuance that each new viewing reveals more poignant details of the story and its characters.

One Movie Helped Robert Pattinson Land ‘The Boy and the Heron’ and Batman That’s Too Hard to Believe
Robert Pattinson’s career path is among the most fascinating in modern Hollywood. From his initial stint as brooding heartthrob Edward Cullen in Twilight to his critically acclaimed turns in independent films, Pattinson has repeatedly chosen roles that challenge traditional expectations. Though most fans acknowledge The Batman as his ultimate departure from mainstream franchise cinema, one lesser-known film was instrumental in landing him a role in both The Boy and the Heron and The Batman.

Studio Ghibli is known for crafting memorable and complex characters. Even side and minor characters in epic movies like Howl's Moving Castle and Laputa: Castle in the Sky linger in the mind. These characters have nuanced personalities, and many fans wish that these characters got more time on screen.
Exploring minor characters may not serve the movies they first appear in, but artists like Ursula and talented ladies like Lettie Hatter could absolutely support their own movies. Some side characters would make great protagonists for prequel stories. Studio Ghibli rarely makes sequels to their films, but such amazing side characters certainly would make a good jumping-off point for spin-off stories.

Princess Mononoke introduced the world to the breathtaking story of Ashitaka, who strove to see with eyes unclouded by hate as he ingrained himself into the violent dispute between San, Moro and the denizens of the forest versus Lady Eboshi and her humans from Irontown. Hailed as one of Studio Ghibli’s most profound and morally gray films, Princess Mononoke has since acquired a cult following, thanks in large part to its stunning artwork, compelling characters and poignant storytelling.
Yet even as it celebrates its much-earned status as one of the best films from Studio Ghibli, some story elements within the narrative leave fans scratching their heads. From wolf princess San’s articulate mastery of human speech to Jigo’s apparently qualmless enthusiasm in handing over the secret of immortality for mere gold, these confusing details barely make sense, with their explanations getting glossed over in the grand scheme of Ashitaka’s epic tale.

It started as a small project and turned into this magnificent animated short. The film follows a pilot in a yellow bi-plane. It reminds me of Porco Rosso of course, very similar vibes (also with Castle in the Sky), but still feels like something unique. I would love to watch more - it's this is just the intro. The future is meant to be bright but, in anime, it can be anything but. Many sci-fi anime end with some sort of tragedy. The main character meets a fatal end or is forced to leave their friends behind. Some losses cannot be prevented. Perhaps the group even splits up over a series of disagreements.
This can be disheartening to sci-fi fans who are hoping their favorite story will end on a more positive note. Everything doesn't have to be perfect, but fans' beloved characters at least deserve to be happy in the end. Luckily, though depressing endings outweigh the happy ones, sci-fi anime can end on a cheerful note if fans know where to look.

Nature as a theme and as a character sits at the very core of Hayao Miyazaki‘s films, many of which deal with the complex interdependence between humanity and the natural environment (the very meaning of the word ecology) – not to mention their destructive relationship. This is what Léo Favier’s French documentary discusses, although not always as directly, as rigorously or as thoroughly as one might wish.
“Miyazaki, Spirit of Nature”, a made-for-tv documentary, is very standardized in its formal approach to its subject matter: a traditional voiceover tells audiences about the Japanese director, his life and works, while the comments are illustrated with shots and scenes from his numerous movies. At other times, various experts are interviewed on camera to share their thoughts about Miyazaki and the way he approaches nature in his films. In the realm of anime, it is safe to say that no one can beat Hayao Miyazaki’s works. The Japanese filmmaker and chairman of Studio Ghibli has been dropping hit after hit for as long as the anime community can remember, and his projects are not only popular in Japan. He has a global fan following, and one of the main reasons behind it is that the dubs of his movies are as spectacular as the subs.

The comparison between dub and sub has been an age-old debate, and the only one who is safe from it is Miyazaki and his anime movies. His dubs and subs are almost equal in comparison, and they are true to the core message that he tries to portray through his work. Aside from that, they also work because they feature some of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Studio Ghibli knows how to weave together a rich tapestry of fantastical elements, using royal characters, political conflict, and the whimsy of fairy tale princesses and princes to create stories sure to delight children. The allure of the regal makes for a compelling reason to include the trope within stories, as far-off lands inhabited by daring damsels encourage young children — and young girls especially — to indulge their imaginations and explore emotional themes like courage, love and the strength of character to overcome challenges.
Many of Studio Ghibli’s movies — especially those that have been touched by Hayao Miyazaki — serve as an ode to childhood, which makes the inclusion of princesses and princes all the more understandable. From Sheeta’s moral defiance to using her family’s legacy as a weapon in Castle in the Sky to Asbel fighting against the Pejite’s stooping to the same brutal behavior as the...

In the eyes of many anime fans, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are the dream team. It's easy to see why this is such a popular belief, as since co-founding Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki has created several all-time classic movies with the studio, including Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro. However, Studio Ghibli is far from a single-person operation. The studio consists of hundreds of creatives, many of whom perform various roles during their time with the company.
Hayao Miyazaki is no different. Despite being the company's figurehead, he has performed several roles over his illustrious career, acting as a director, writer, producer, or animation director for many of the studio's projects. However, despite being seen as the company's central figure, he has not worked on every film bearing the Studio Ghibli logo. So, which films did Hayao Miyazaki work on, and what role did he play in each one's creation?...

Hayao Miyazaki is known for creating strong female protagonists in his movies. From the brave and vicious heroine of Princess Mononoke, the adventurous little witch in Kiki’s Delivery Service, to the two adorable siblings in My Neighbor Totoro, Studio Ghibli movies have always created exceptional female leads.

The legendary director and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki is known for crafting films that resonate across age groups and cultures. His works, such as My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, and Kiki’s Delivery Service, often explore themes of growth, environmentalism, and human connection. However, with his groundbreaking movie, Spirited Away, Miyazaki set out to do something entirely unconventional: rebel against the prevailing trends in anime culture.

Released in 2001, the story of Spirited Away follows a 10-year-old girl, Chihiro’s journey of self-discovery and resilience in a fantastical world; subverting the traditional coming-of-age storylines that are often dominated by external validation or romantic undertones. This movie became monumental in anime history, which still serves as a rebellion against the genre’s norms and a display of inner strength and authenticity.

Studio Ghibli produces a range of films, from contemporary romance to historical dramas to isekai and high fantasy tales. Ghibli fantasy films are their most well-known by far. Some high fantasy tales are dark and made for a teenage and adult audience, and other fantasy films capture the whimsy and comfort of early childhood.
The Ghibli creators take inspiration from such a wide range of source material that their fantasy stories are incredibly unique. Some draw inspiration from European and Japanese folklore, while others take cues from young adult novels. Even the fantasy films that follow the basic hero's journey storyline and incorporate classic fantasy tropes, like the happily ever after trope, still feel creative and fresh.

Studio Ghibli has gifted the world many wonderful stories brimming with imaginative and creative elements, with a few even bordering the line between fantasy and science fiction. The floating city of Laputa and its sentry robots, for example, from Hayao Miyazaki’s early work Castle in the Sky, operate thanks to the technologically advanced use of Aetherium. However, with the exception of one, most of Studio Ghibli’s films tend to root themselves firmly in the fantasy camp, including elements such as magic and spirits in the worldbuilding and characterization.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, however, proves to be the exception to this rule, steering itself into distinctive science fiction territory through its plot, worldbuilding and characters. "My Neighbor Totoro" is undoubtedly one of the best Studio Ghibli movies. It gave the studio its mascot, and is a perfect movie that's both sweet and cuddly, like its titular forest spirit, but also carries layers of darkness and nuance. This is a movie about how fantasy helps kids cope in times of hardship, which made this the perfect salve when doing a double feature with one of the most harrowing war dramas ever made.
A very early Studio Ghibli production, "My Neighbor Totoro" follows two sisters who relocate to rural Japan when their mother gets gravely ill. While their father is away to spend time with their mother, the two girls have magical adventures with forest spirits.
The film's success is long-lasting, not just because it became the studio logo or because Totoro is arguably the most recognizable Ghibli character and generally one of the most popular anime characters ever.

The first Pokémon series to move away from its popular protagonist Ash, Pokémon Horizons: The Series delivers several significant departures from the anime’s traditional formula. Led by Liko, Horizons delivers new heroes like Roy, Friede, and the rest of the Rising Volt Tacklers, using their explorations into the histories of ancient Pokémon and their related artifacts to pivot away from the original anime’s tournaments and gym battles.
These mysterious items even bring together Pokémon Horizons’ new protagonists. Liko's pendant catalyzes her connection with Roy—wielder of a similarly mysterious Pokéball in his own right—and her fellow adventures. World-renowned filmmaker and legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki is so synonymous with Studio Ghibli that most viewers assume he directed every one of the iconic studio's movies. While this is true for the most part, especially when it comes to the studio's most critically acclaimed and well-known films, there are some notable exceptions. It's undeniable that Studio Ghibli's distinctive style and storytelling have influenced countless filmmakers, not only in Japan, but also in the West. Some examples of iconic American animated films inspired by Ghibli are Coco from Spirited Away and Luca from Porco Rosso. Because of this, it isn't strange that DreamWorks' latest hit film, The Wild Robot, has joined the club of Ghibli-inspired movies since it has the perfect aftertaste of a Hayao Miyazaki work.
The Wild Robot has captivated viewers and critics alike, becoming the best-rated animated film of 2024 and receiving praise for its unique mix of nature, technology, humanity, and found family. However, even though viewers have compared the film to other popular animated movies like The Iron Giant and Wall-e, The Wild Robots director, Chris Sanders, has made it clear it shares a deep connection to the underrated Studio Ghibli's movie by Miyazaki, Castle in the Sky.

Animators have always pushed the boundaries of their medium. Theyve stretched forms and molded shapes to create spectacular displays of narrative artistry. Sometimes, the results revolve around a realistic recreation of the world around us. Other animated films take a different route, choosing to portray whimsical worlds of magic. Alternatively, animators can straddle the fine line between these two extremes. Some of the most famous examples of magical realism hail from the Japanese icon Studio Ghibli.
While some of Ghibli's older films such as Castle in the Sky and Kikis Delivery Service revolve around European realities, many of the studios most famous works focus on Japanese history and culture. Notably, both of its Academy Award winners, Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron, are perfect examples of uniquely Japanese exercises in liminal realities. Although Western animators are more hesitant to take such bold approaches to narrative and stylistic artistry,...

Studio Ghibli's latest re-releases are perfect for model kit enthusiasts. The company's online shop has freshly replenished its stock of Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke and Laputa-themed paper crafts.
Donguri Sora's "Paper Theater" craft kits recently resurfaced on the site's digital catalog. As shown below, these paper crafts are assembled via layered pieces of laser-cut paper that is textured to resemble wood. Two of the three kits recreate iconic architectural structures from Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso. The latter is a highly-detailed blueprint-style model of Marco Rossolini's seaplane, the Savoias 21F. The former, when assembled, depicts "The Tiger Moth" -- the massive airship piloted by Dola's pirate gang. The foreground of the scene also showcases the iconic "Kodama" spirits. Including tax, each model costs...

Hayao Miyazaki, the director responsible for many of our favorite anime films, is a one-of-a-kind visionary in the industry. His Studio Ghibli movies are in a league of their own with works like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbour Totoro, dominating the anime film genre. More recently, he directed The Boy and The Heron, a work inspired by his own life and the process of grieving his mother. His career is filled with great moments with little left to explore.
