“Star Trek” hasn’t been recognized by the Emmys for acting since the original series aired in the 1960s. Back then Leonard Nimoy earned three bids for his iconic role as Spock. But no actors from the franchise have been nominated since. Will that change with the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard”? The Paramount+ series submitted the following 12 actors for consideration on the Emmy ballot.

Think this year’s outstanding TV movie category is a bit weird? It’s always been a category with an identity problem. Flash back for a moment to 1972, the year that the ABC TV movie “Brian’s Song” won five Emmys. “Brian’s Song” is considered one of the seminal TV movies of all time, a tear-jerker starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams about Chicago Bears player Brian Piccolo (Caan), who discovered he had cancer soon after turning pro.

Nominated for 11 Emmys overall, “Brian’s Song” was so popular, and so successful, that it helped put the ABC “Movie of the Week,” as the franchise was called, front and center — cementing the TV movie as a network staple. The “movie of the week” idea was so groundbreaking that the entire industry continued to call TV movies “MOWs” long after ABC had ditched the name.

Cinematographers guild board also votes in officers for 2017-18 term.

The American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) has re-elected Kees van Oostrum for a second term as president.

The Asc board met on Monday night and also voted in the officers for the 2017-18 term.

They are: Bill Bennett, John Simmons and Cynthia Pusheck as vice-presidents; Levie Isaacks as treasurer; David Darby as secretary; and Isidore Mankofsky as sergeant-at-arms.

“As an organisation, we are focused on education, international outreach, diversity and preservation of our heritage,” van Oostrum said. “Over the past year, we expanded our Master Class programme internationally to Toronto and China. We launched a Chinese version of American Cinematographer magazine. We are preparing for a third International Cinematography Summit, which sees attendees from several other societies around the world.

The director that epitomized the 1970’s, Joseph Sargent, has sadly passed away. (1925-2014)

With a career lasting 50 years, Sargent brought to the big screen such thrilling cinema as The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three, MacArthur, White Lightning and Colossus: The Forbin Project.

Directors Guild of America President Paris Barclay made the following statement upon learning of the passing of director Joseph Sargent:

“When it comes to directing Movies for Television, Joe’s dominance and craftsmanship was legendary – for the past 50 years. With eight DGA Awards nominations in Movies for Television, more than any other director in this category, Joe embodied directorial excellence on the small screen. He was unafraid of taking risks, believing in his heart that television audiences demanded the highest quality stories – whether chronicling uncomfortable historic events like the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study in Miss Evers’ Boys, or compelling personal stories about inspiring individuals like...

Joseph Sargent, the director of the original film adaptation of “The Taking of Pelham 123,” died on Monday at his home in Malibu, California as the result of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 89.

A prolific director who got his start in the 1950s, Sargent has more Emmy wins for television films or mini-series than any other director. He took home four Emmy awards for directing out of nine total nominations. He also won four Directors Guild of America awards out of nine nominations.

TNT’s hit series The Closer has been looked upon for a potential spin-off. The network has decided to further milk the successful cop drama by getting creator and executive producer James Duff to spawn a new series based on The Closer, which stars Kyra Sedgewick as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a skilled detective and officer at the Priority Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The yet-untitled spin-off is currently code named The Fixer, and is being co-written by The Closer co-executive producer Adam Belanoff and Michael Berchem. However, it is still unclear whether the spin-off will focus on an existing Closer character, or an entirely different individual. Nonetheless, TNT confirmed that they have ordered a script, without disclosing any more details. Additionally, Greer Shephard and Michael Robin will executively produce the yet-untitled new show.

Maureen Stapleton, the Oscar-winning actress who was revered for her roles on the stage and screen, passed away today in Lenox, Massachusetts, from chronic pulmonary disease. She was 80. Stapleton's matronly appearance belied a fiery emotional core, one she used to devastating effect in her most recognized dramatic roles. She began her career in the theater, attending the Herbert Berghof Acting School, then the Actor's Studio which she parlayed into her Broadway debut in nothing less than Burgess Meredith's 1946 production of "The Playboy of the Western World." She appeared in numerous stage productions including Lillian Hellman's "Toys in the Attic," and several Tennessee Williams efforts, including "The Rose Tattoo," for which she won her first Tony in 1951 for her role as Serafina Delle Rose. Her first film role was no less auspicious and presaged a storied career on film. She received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination in 1958 for her part in Lonelyhearts, opposite another Broadway lion, Montgomery Clift. She was nominated again for Best Supporting Actress in 1971 for her role as the unsuspecting wife of the despondent bomber in Airport and again in 1978 for her role as Pearl in Woody Allen's first "serious" film, the dour Interiors. She finally won the Oscar for her role as the brusque, radical anarchist Emma Goldman in Warren Beatty's Reds. Her second Tony was awarded to her for her part in Neil Simon's "The Gingerbread Lady" in 1971. She also won notice for her television roles, including winning the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Lead for Among the Paths to Eden and nominations for All the King's Men, Queen of the Stardust Ballroom, The Gathering, B.L. Styker, Miss Rose White and Road to Avonlea. Stapleton was also notable in Bye, Bye, Birdie, Plaza Suite (with another long-time collaborator, Neil Simon), and Cocoon. She is survived by her son, Daniel Allentuck, a daughter, Katharine Bambery, and a brother, Jack Stapleton.
