One of the Best Jim Carrey Movies on Netflix Earned Him Close to $50M Despite Opting Out of a Salary
In the ‘90s, there was no bigger comedy star than Jim Carrey. While the In Living Color actor was a relative unknown when he was signed on for films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the runaway success of the mystery comedy made him a star like no other. In the same year, he delivered two more hits and became the biggest name in Hollywood.
While he lost some of his success with experiments like The Truman Show and Man on the Moon, a good old comedy reportedly brought him back to the top as its box office success netted him a higher payday than a lot of his other films. The actor was reportedly not paid a salary for the 2008 comedy Yes Man, which was consistently in Netflix’s top 10 list in the UK.

Did Jim Carrey take a major chance with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was a risk, far from his usual slapstick comedies. Yet, it became one of his most celebrated performances. After his breakout year in 1994 with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, Carrey jumped to the A-list. A year later, he played the Riddler in Batman Forever and returned as Ace Ventura in When Nature Calls. Both films were huge hits.
By 1996, Jim Carrey made history. He became the first actor to earn a $20 million paycheck for The Cable Guy. The film, a dark comedy, was divisive. It earned only $60 million at the box office, making Carrey’s salary nearly half the production budget. But his price tag was set. He remained one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors.

Few television shows have captured the hearts of fans the way Modern Family has. Running for over 11 successful seasons from 2009 to 2020, the show has garnered critical reviews and has had a huge cultural impact through its unique mockumentary style.
A 22-time Emmy-winning sitcom, Modern Family not only redefined family-based comedy but also became a favorite for its witty storyline, relatable characters, and heartwarming moments.

While the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker did a good job at keeping the audience entertained with their unusual, hilarious antics, what makes the show even more special is the countless surprise guest stars who popped in every now and then for unforgettable cameos. Throughout its run, there have been multiple actors and celebrities who have made an appearance, becoming a hit among fans. However, there have also been plenty of blink-and-you-miss-it cameos that perhaps even die-hard fans would have a hard time remembering.

Me, Myself & Irene is a Jekyll and Hyde story where Jim Carrey hams it up as a character struggling with his sanity. The film played out dark themes for comedic effect, provoking protest over its depiction of mental health.
Hulu is streaming Me, Myself & Irene on Apr. 1. This film added to Jim Carrey's repertoire of slapsticks, including Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Liar Liar. The Truman Show and Man on the Moon proved he has the range for serious dramas, but he returned to form with the 2000 comedy. Carrey went all out with Me, Myself & Irene; his character's suppressed rage led to a psychotic breakdown, consequently manifesting a second, more aggressive personality. Critical reception for the film was mixed, but it was a box office hit (earning $149.3 million against its $51 million budget).
Carrey confirmed he did all of his stunts in Me, Myself & Irene.

The bro comedy found a resurgence in the early 2000s thanks to the Frat pack and Paul Rudd. With a series of flicks trading leads and supporting actors, the genre felt a boom before it slowly faded away again. However, the genre had a legitimate hit inbound in Friendship, which not only stars Paul Rudd but adds Tim Robinson’s anachronistic humor to the fold. The marrying of the two styles creates a surprisingly powerful message about male bonding while also critiquing aspects of the genre. The resulting comedy is not only very funny, but absurd in the best ways.

With Tim Robinson’s first starring film role in writer-director Andrew DeYoung’s A24 debut Friendship, the comedian hits every cringe note with assistance from Paul Rudd and Kate Mara.
The anxiety-inducing dark bromance stars Robinson as suburban family man Craig, who quickly develops a man crush on his new neighbor Austin (Rudd), a beloved local weatherman with his own rock band and an eclectic collection of ancient artifacts.
But his desperate attempts to impress his new pal only makes things disastrously awkward, reverberating through his life and impacting his marriage, job and entire wellbeing as he gets recurring nosebleeds throughout, which Robinson uses as a hilarious physical comedy device.
“This is why guys shouldn’t have friends,” Craig gripes in one scene, which feels like a good thesis for this film who’s desperate for connection but keeps getting in his own way.

Turns out you don’t have to be Irish to be lucky come March. That’s right, repertory cinemas from coast to coast will be raining down four-leaf clovers in the form of cinematic gems like “Matewan,” “The Watermelon Woman,” “The Cable Guy,” and many more. And we know what you’re thinking…you just got through slamming back Oscar film after Oscar film, maybe it’s time to take a little break from the movies. After all, spring’s around the corner — it might be nice to step outside for a bit, breathe in the fresh air.
Well, you’re wrong.
Fresh air is for people who can’t appreciate a random assortment of food scents and possibly carbon dioxide from a leaking soda machine tank. You’re of a different breed and as such, we know there’s no better place for you than the comfy cozy darkness of your local cinema.

Judd Apatow has insisted an R-rated comedy could still be a huge box office hit.The 57-year-old actor - who has appeared in movies like 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up' as well as producing the likes of 'Superbad' and 'Step Brothers' and more over the years - has insisted "one person with a great idea" is all that's needed to give the genre a revival by inspiring everyone to "do it again".He told Variety: "These things kind of swing back and forth."If someone made something as funny as ‘The Hangover’ right now, it would make a billion dollars, and everyone would be trying to do that."It ebbs and it flows, and hopefully it’ll flow soon.”Apatow also dismissed the idea that political correctness makes comedy harder than it was in the past.He said: "I don't think there's a content obstacle.

As a director, Ben Stiller is a wily one. After skimming the surface of Gen-x disillusionment with his debut feature "Reality Bites," the son of comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara made his name helming silly-smart films whose zany exteriors belie their depth. Take his 1996 comedy "The Cable Guy." Though it initially proved to be something of a divisively dark curiosity (Roger Ebert actually listed it among his picks for the worst movies of its year), it's since undergone a reevaluation and is now regarded as being prescient in its satirization of the public's true crime obsession. Stiller's 2001 fashion industry burlesque "Zoolander" has likewise become a full-fledged cult classic, while his edgy takedown of Hollywood ego and excess, "Tropic Thunder," is just as audacious now as it was when it first arrived in 2008.

In the early 1990s, Jim Carrey had a run of movies that cemented his place as one of the greatest comedy actors of a generation. One that has left a lasting impression on pop culture is 1994’s The Mask, the eye-popping, Latin-dancing, Cameron Diaz-introducing spectacle based on the (incredibly) graphic novels by Dark Horse Comics. Now fans of Carrey’s wildly energetic performance have made it a streaming hit on Paramount+ over 30 years later, which asks the question of whether it is time to give The Mask the R-rated reboot it deserves.
Directed by Chuck Russell, the 1994 film is very loosely based on the comic book character who finds that he turns into a (very dubious) superhero when donning a mystical mask – see what they did with the title? The Mask follows bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), a soft-spoken nice guy who transforms into a green-faced whirlwind of mischief...

When Ben Stiller was 8, he visited his father, Jerry, on the set of the movie The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and experienced a kind of epiphany. In the 1974 thriller set in the New York City subway, Jerry, who would enjoy a late-career resurgence 20 years later as Seinfeld‘s Frank Costanza, was playing a transit cop alongside Walter Matthau, and Ben was visiting during a night shoot, as lights on giant cranes shone down on the slick city streets around the Triborough Bridge.

Jim Carrey's career has taken some interesting turns over the years. After becoming a box-office juggernaut in the mid-1990s with the blazing blockbuster streak of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask," "Dumb and Dumber," "Batman Forever," and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," he found the ditch with the commercial and critical wipeout of Ben Stiller's darkly comedic curveball "The Cable Guy." The thoughtful actor reestablished his commercial connection with mainstream moviegoers the following year with "Liar Liar," then took another risk with Peter Weir's "The Truman Show." The result was one of the best films of 1998, one that received a curious smattering of Oscar nominations for Weir (Director), Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), and Original Screenplay (Andrew Niccol). That a film as acclaimed and successful as "The Truman Show" could be denied Best Picture and Best Actor nods in a weak year felt like a rebuke of its star.

An unfairly criticized Jim Carrey movie has gotten a new streaming home. As of Jan. 1, The Cable Guy is now available to stream on Max.
Released in 1996, The Cable Guy was directed by Ben Stiller and written by Lou Holtz Jr. The movie features Sonic the Hedgehog 3 star Jim Carrey as a cable TV installer who aggressively befriends a customer played by Matthew Broderick. While it was expected to reach greater heights financially with Carrey in the lead, the film was still profitable at the box office, earning over $102 million against a budget of $47 million — $20 million of which reportedly went straight into Carrey's pocket. Its reception was also divisive, garnering mixed reviews and respective critics and audiences scores of 55% and 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Two of the best movies of Jim Carrey’s career got two of the worst sequels ever made, and they each used the same ridiculous premise to get around Carrey’s absence. Carrey has famously been trepidatious about doing sequels ever since his first one was a disaster. He prefers to explore new stories and new characters with each project instead of going back to rehash a familiar role. A lot of the sequels he’s been in, like Kick-Ass 2 and Batman Forever, have been sequels to movies he wasn’t in.
Of course, there have been a few exceptions. He reprised his role as Lloyd Christmas in the belated sequel to Dumb and Dumber, and he’s appeared as Dr. Robotnik in all three of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Ben Stiller is one of the most notable comedic talents of his generation. He is known for his ability to shine in goofy films, such as The Night at the Museum, Dodgeball, or Meet the Parents. The comedian is also known for his work in front of and behind the camera. He made his directorial feature debut in 1994 with the romantic comedy Reality Bites, which was part of his claim to fame. After Reality Bites, Stiller directed other movies and TV episodes, including The Cable Guy and Tropic Thunder.
Stiller's comedies have also gotten sequels fairly often. Meet the Parents, for example, was followed up by Meet the Fockers, which then became a trilogy with the 2010 film Little Fockers. It's now expected to have a fourth installment, with Stiller expected to return. Night at the Museum is also a comedy trilogy, beginning with the 2006 film and ending with Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb...

Jim Carrey's divisive Christmas movie has become a streaming hit 24 years after its original release. The comedic actor rose to stardom during the 1990s with a series of box office hits, starting with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber (all released in 1994), followed by Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever (both in 1995). These hits made Carrey one of the highest-paid comedic actors, starting with the slightly darker comedy, The Cable Guy, in 1996 and Liar Liar in 1997.
Carrey's success as a leading comedic actor continued well into the 2000s, starting with How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000, which became the second highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time, and continued with Bruce Almighty, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Yes Man in the following years. In 2009, Carrey played multiple characters in the 3D animated adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol,...

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are not an especially recognizable duo. Carrey is best known for his work in comedy movies, including The Mask (1994), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), and The Cable Guy (1996). He has touched on more serious work with The Truman Show (1998), but he most often prefers to remain in lighthearted and family-friendly movies. Winslet, on the other hand, is a dramatic actor, who is best known for starring in Titanic (1997), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and other serious productions. She is currently preparing to star in the upcoming Avatar: Fire & Ash.
The two actors are both critically acclaimed and have won numerous awards for their work. Winslet won an Academy Award, Primetime Emmys, and a Grammy Award. Carrey, meanwhile, earned two Golden Globes and numerous critics' awards. While both have exceptional talent, they are hardly an expected match. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe became household names, Jim Carrey made waves in the superhero genre with The Mask. Released in 1994, this quirky comic book adaptation showed Carrey’s incredible range as he brought to life a character with two wildly contrasting personalities.
That year was a career-defining one for Carrey, who also delivered two other cult classics: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber. With this trio of hits, Carrey became a comedy legend.

His superhero journey didn’t stop there, as he took on the role of The Riddler in 1995’s Batman Forever. However, it was The Mask that truly changed the game, combining humor, action, and groundbreaking effects. Despite its massive success at the box office, Carrey’s paycheck for the film was surprisingly modest compared to the fortune it raked in.

While viewers come to light comedy movies to escape the horrors of the world and enjoy a good laugh, some films cannot help but unexpectedly go to dark places. Whether it’s a kids’ comedy that suddenly introduces a shockingly bleak piece of information or laugh-out-loud movies that turn increasingly sinister as the runtime progresses, comedy movies can sometimes be surprisingly disarming. While a certain amount of darkness has its place in every genre, the results can be unnerving when audiences don’t see it coming.
Some of the best light comedy movies ever have sinister subtexts that make the movie unexpectedly dark. While wacky characters may seem to be laugh-a-minute personalities at first, the existential nightmare that often makes up comedy movie premises can’t help but feel dark as the story builds toward its grand conclusion. Although the point of a good comedy is to make viewers laugh,...

You know that fake commercial in Tropic Thunder where Tugg Speedman and the Scorcher franchise keep coming back again… again… and again? That’s pretty much the Terminator franchise by 2019. Where over and over again it respawns and says “I’ll be back… but this time it’ll be different. It’ll be a re-imagining! Accompanied by another trilogy. No, this time we’re back with the old cast! And it’ll be like before!” It’s like Jim Carrey yelling at Matthew Broderick in The Cable Guy “I can fix it! I can make it cool again, Stephen!” But will they? For some! Not for all. This is the story of what happened to Terminator: Dark Fate. The film that may have killed the Terminator movie franchise for good.
When Terminator Genisys performed poorly at the domestic box office, Skydance Productions (which suspiciously sounds like Skynet) was left with a choice.

The worst movie of Jim Carreys entire career and its not even close is a grisly crime thriller that doesnt have a single positive review counted on Rotten Tomatoes. Carrey has starred in many great movies. His tenure as a movie star kicked off with a triple whammy of classic comedies, one after the other: The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Hes made great straightforward comedies, like Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty, and hes made quirkier, more outside-the-box films, like The Truman Show and The Cable Guy.
But Carrey has also had his fair share of disappointments. The long-awaited sequel Dumb and Dumber To was a massive let-down compared to its iconic predecessor; The Incredible Burt Wonderstone has a hilarious premise and a star-studded cast, but it plays it too safe; and Kick-Ass 2 is completely lacking the first movies sense of fun. The nepo baby discourse as it pertains to the arts is typically a grievance-driven undertaking that allows low- to no-talent individuals the opportunity to blame someone other than themselves for their lack of success. Though there have been instances of celebrity-adjacent people receiving seemingly undeserved gigs, these are usually one-and-not-too-many-more-done deals undone by the recipient's profound absence of skill.

Ryan Murphy's "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story" debuted on Netflix on September 19, 2024. The series recounts the details of the Menéndez brothers' murder of their parents, José and Kitty, in 1989. Those alive and watching the news at the time recall what a blazingly salacious affair their trial was. Beginning in 1993, CourtTV broadcasted extended portions of the time the brothers spent in court (they were tried separately), and the details began to sound like a daytime soap opera. The brothers said that José Menéndez was sexually abusing Erik, and that he threatened to kill them both if they told the cops. Kitty never stood up to him, so the brothers felt no other recourse but to kill them with a shotgun in preemptive self-defense. After the murders, but prior to the arrest, the brother had rather suspiciously begun living richly on their sizable inheritance.

Ryan Murphy’s latest attempt to turn real-life crimes into television gold is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story which, despite being called out on social media for some pretty glaring inaccuracies, has been attracting a lot of eyeballs. Why? Because people love horrific murders thats why — just as long as they’re on TV, or in podcasts, or celebrated on a series of collectible trading cards.
It’s pretty wild that we’re living in a time when the phrase “Based on the Horrifying True Events” is a major selling point in trailers.
But this isn’t the first time that the Menendez brothers, who were famously convicted of murdering their parents in 1996, have inspired a work of fiction. One of the first narrative allusions to the case was in a movie that came out just two weeks before the Menendez brothers were sentenced: The Cable Guy. Come to think of it,...

Ben Stiller never intended to go so long without leading a movie. The fan-favorite actor recently opened up about taking a seven-year break (save for the odd cameo) from movies, revealing that it was never the plan.
While speaking with Variety about his new comedy Nutcrackers, Stiller admitted, "I never thought Id take this much time away from acting," promising his fans that "it wasnt intentional; it was just how things evolved." The actor explained that he got busy with Severance, the Apple TV+ series he executive produces and directs, which largely prevented him from taking on other jobs. However, when the 2023 Hollywood strikes happened, delaying production of Severance Season 2, Stiller found himself unexpectedly available, leading him to board Nutcrackers, which received a waiver from the unions to shoot given that it was made outside the studio system.

A brilliant sequel idea for Bruce Almighty involving Satan's powers may have changed the fate of the franchise. Jim Carrey was on board with the pitch for "Brucifer," a sequel that sadly never made it past the planning stage. Carrey's willingness to return for this unusual sequel showcases his rare exceptions for sequels he normally avoids.
A genius sequel pitch for Jim Carrey's Bruce Almighty has come to light, and I'm pretty bummed that it never became a reality. The original 2003 film, which saw Carrey's character (the titular Bruce) gain God's (Morgan Freeman's) powers, was a smash hit, bringing in $485 million at the global box office. Bruce Almighty's success quickly inspired a unique sequel idea starring Carrey, but the pitch never came to anything. Instead, Evan Almighty hit theaters in 2007, ending the franchise with a box office bomb. Based on what we know about the Carrey pitch, things might have gone very differently.

For the past 30 years, Jack Black has made a name for himself as one of the most beloved and watchable comedic actors in Hollywood who has several underappreciated hidden gems in his varied filmography. While viewers will be well aware of Blacks breakout success as a wannabe rockstar turned substitute teacher in School of Rock, there was far more to the talented comedian than this. Others may recognize him for his musical accomplishments with his rock group Tenacious D or even his blockbuster success in the Jumanji franchise, but this was just the tip of...

It’s 1970, and as the astronauts of Apollo 13 ventured around the dark side of the moon, they faced a life-threatening crisis. Who helped save the day? Judith Love Cohen. Judith had helped create the Abort Guidance System that would ultimately rescue those astronauts.
But wait, it gets better. Judith was still working on a problem for the Apollo program, the day she gave birth to a son. She took a printout to the hospital, called her boss to say she’d finished it, and then casually gave birth to the future star of School of Rock, Po himself, the man who brought Bernie Tiede to the silver screen, the one-and-only Jack Black. Talk about multitasking!
Now, with a mom like that, you’d think Jack would be all about the math and science, right? Well, not exactly. Jack was a kid who was not great at academics, but had a knack for making people laugh.

If there's anything true about life in any town in the world, it's that there's always a local band or two that everyone knows about. Having such a band in a TV show is a great way to add reality and depth to both characters and settings, and there are many, many bands in the history of the TV medium, some of which make it from that local band start to headlines around the world. From anime to heavy dramas to sitcoms, the world of TV is full of musical acts, some of which have become not only beloved on their own show, but have even been hits in the world outside of TV.
With so very many TV bands in existence, naming the pantheon of TV musical acts is a tough job. Is it based on musical ability? Does popularity earn the distinction of "best"? Or is there an...

The first season of The Surreal Life was a hit, with fans still caring about the celebrities years later. Brande Roderick continued acting, charity work, launched an OnlyFans account, and created a business. Mc Hammer enjoyed success post-show and remains married with five children, continuing his music career.
Once someone is in the spotlight, it is only natural for fans to want to know what happened to them. For example, fans want to know what happened to Married at First Sight's Justin Hall and what is going on with Fraser Olender. Fans also want to know what happened to Heath Ledger's daughter since his passing and how Phil Hartman's kids are doing now.
Since fans still care about celebrities years later, it makes sense that the first season of The Surreal Life was a hit. However, many fans of the show have lost track of what happened to the show's original cast.

When we talk about great movie comedies, seldom does the name “Larry the Cable Guy” come up. Apart from the Cars franchise, Larry the Cable Guy’s filmography is mainly limited to forgettable turds, such as Delta Farce, as well as straight-to-video sequels to movies that starred less affordable action stars.
After all, who better to replace Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Arnold Schwarzenegger than Larry the Cable Guy, star of Tooth Fairy 2 and Jingle All the Way 2.
Weirdly, one of Larry the Cable Guy’s contributions to the world of cinema straight-up used a character from an earlier, highly-acclaimed film that in no way involved Larry the Cable Guy.
In 2008, Mr. the Cable Guy made a movie called Witless Protection, about a small-town deputy who takes off with an FBI witness, believing that the agents involved in the case are actually baddies. Amazingly, it managed to earn a 4 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
