Avis à la une
I usually am not so fond of romantic movies, but this romance is told with so much credibility and without all the usual cheesy sentimentality that I am touched by it every time I see it. It never becomes dull even if the movie stretches well over 2 and a half hour.
Any bad? Well, no, but most likely it is not suited for those who dont like slowburning romantic movies, but for those who do like this genre, this movie is excellently suited and recommended. Can be seen by young (children) and old, because it is a wonderful, profound, credible tale about the love for family bonds...
I won't go into plot, and things like that, I'll just say it's exquisitely shot, beautifully acted by all with young Scarlett Johannson being a standout. But of course, Robert Redford deserves special mention for this is not only one of his best directed films, but also he gave himself one of his better roles. He's very good here. There's a close-up on him at the end of this film that has to be seen to be believed. Everything his character is feeling at that moment is revealed perfectly on his face. It's one of those moments that happen every once in a while. One of those moments that make you glad there is a thing called film.
As others have mentioned the experience not only changes the horse but most of the "supporting" characters.
The cinematography was powerful - while I am not a student of the discipline I could see that the angles chosen for the subject, the landscape scenes of the beautiful Montana ranges and sunsets - one could watch and understand the movie without the dialog.
I believe Ansel Adams - if he were alive - would love some of these scenes.
I vote this as a "must see" for everyone. It not only has a powerful plot but beautiful cinematography...

- AnecdotesThis was the first movie directed by Robert Redford in which he appeared on-screen. However, he previously served as the narrator of Et au milieu coule une rivière (1992).
- GaffesBooker is in the corral alone trying to "hook on" with Pilgrim. Just before he squats to remove the lasso from Pilgrim if you look under the horses neck you can see the lower half of a man dressed exactly the same as Booker.
- Citations
Tom Booker: There was a boy from the Blackfeet reservation, he used to do some work around here for a while. Sixteen, strong kid, good kid. He and I were really, really good friends. One day he went swimming and dove headfirst into the lake... and right into a rock. And it snapped his neck, paralyzed him. And after the accident I'd look in on him from time to time. But he wasn't there. It was like his mind, his spirit, whatever you want to call it, just disappeared. The only thing left was just anger. Just sort of as if the... the boy I once knew just went somewhere else.
Grace: I know where he goes.
Tom Booker: I know you do. Don't you disappear. You do whatever you have to do to hold on.
- Versions alternativesThe film formats the early scenes at a 1.85: 1 aspect ratio, and the Montana scenes at a wider 2.35: 1 aspect ratio. The Blu-ray release keeps everything at a 2.35: 1 aspect ratio, because if one tried to reproduce both aspect ratios on a Blu-ray, the picture would get smaller during the Montana scenes instead of wider. The screen on an HDTV cannot expand.
