As Goldie Hawn once put it, Hollywood has only three roles for women: Ingénue, District Attorney and “Driving Miss Daisy”. The fact of the matter is, too many strong talents see the pool of good parts unfairly dry up once they reach middle age, and short of radically reshaping the American film industry (I’m for that, too!), might I suggest this temporary stop-gap – might they consider learning French?
While it doesn’t reach the heady highs of last year’s festival hit “Things To Come,” Martin Provost’s “The Midwife” once again proves that French filmmakers know how to treat actresses of a certain age. Offering plum roles to Catherines Frot and Catherine Deneuve, “The Midwife” is a minor-key crowd pleaser about friendship, forgiveness and rolling with the punches.

Photos of iconic actor Kurt Russell and his crazy sideburns did the rounds online not so long ago and if you were struck wondering what had prompted Russell's extreme facial hair, here's your answer. Russell is currently starring with Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Jena Malone, James Ransone, and Richard Jenkins in Craig Zahler's dark western Bone Tomahawk. Here's the synopsis:After an outlaw unknowingly leads a band of cannibalistic Troglodytes into the peaceful western town of Bright Hope, the monsters kidnap several settlers, including the wife of a local rancher. Despite his injured leg the rancher joins a small rescue party with the sheriff, his aging deputy and a strong-willed gunslinger. Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice came and went theatrically. Much like Spike Jonze’s Her, it seems an expensive arthouse film that didn’t connect with the public, though both were nominated for Screenplay Oscars. Vice made $8 million, while Anderson’s last film The Master only made twice as much. The filmmaker hasn’t ever scored a big hit (his biggest success was There Will Be Blood, which made $40 Million), and that’s a little sad because he’s one of the greatest filmmakers working today. This noted, Vice is destined to live on as a cult favorite. It’s too drugged out not to eventually find an audience, though its resemblances to films like The Big Lebowski and The Long Goodbye are mostly superficial. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello, who works as a sort of private investigator, and the...

Inherent Vice
Written for the screen and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
USA, 2014
Even if you were not around during the 1970s, Inherent Vice comes across as a faded, nostalgic memory. Being a faithful adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel, the film recounts the dying days of the free love era, laced with the look, feel and paraphernalia of the subculture. Anderson’s comedic thriller peppers itself with restless, almost out of place laughter, while dedicating itself to the themes of the early Seventies. One is reminded of private-eye classics such as Roman Polanski’s Chinatown and Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye, with traces of Zucker-Abrahams comedies like Airplane! and The Naked Gun. For many, the homage to 1970s filmmaking will be a very real and thrilling look down memory lane. For others, it’ll be a history lesson like no other found in modern day filmmaking.

In Paul Thomas Anderson's dizzying crime comedy "Inherent Vice" (read our review from the New York Film Festival here), characters flit in and out, each one played by a terrific actor, as shaggy dog detective Doc (Joaquin Phoenix) tries to untangle a mystery that involves his old girlfriend (Katherine Waterston), a missing hippie (Owen Wilson), a real estate tycoon (Eric Roberts), and an entity known only as The Golden Fang. One of the characters Doc meets along the way is a young woman named Hope Harlingen, played by Jena Malone, who most know from her role in the blockbuster "Hunger Games" franchise.
Hope is a recovering drug addict in 1970 Los Angeles and as such she looks pretty rough, with a mouth full of crummy veneers and skin like a citrus-deprived pirate. She's only in the movie briefly but makes a big impression. We talked about her chompers, what it...

Inherent Vice is filled with flaws, but it's all the better for it. It's a wild, silly, confusing mind-trip with hypnotic acting (and music!) and oddly, a lot of heart. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film is based on the 2009 novel by Thomas Pychon.
Taking place in the 1970s, the story follows Joaquin Phoenix's Larry "Doc" Sportello, a drug-fueled Los Angeles detective who investigates the disappearance of his former girlfriend Shasta, played by the seductive Katherine Waterston. But Shasta's disappearance is only the beginning of Doc's problems. Soon, all sorts of bizarre, albeit interesting characters start asking Doc to look into "this and that" for them: an ex-con named Tariq Khalil (Michael Kenneth Williams), now affiliated with the Warriors Against the Man Black Armed Militia, wants to find a former prison mate of his; Coy Harlingen (Owen Wilson), a sax player who faked his death and now wants...

Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice is a mess of absurdities. It investigates the ludicrous conventions of the detective genre. It rambles through the self-indulgent, dying age of the hippies. It lurches along the vainglorious, narcissistic Los Angeles culture and cityscape. Anderson wants to package everything he can from his adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel, and while the result is occasionally interesting, the movie becomes enamored of its own cleverness in how it approaches its various topics with a sense of droll mockery, straddling the border of wackiness and respectability. We're wound through a convoluted plot where the mystery may not be the point, but the points don't matter when any emotional resonance is crushed beneath the weight of smug shenanigans. Private Detective Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) is lounging around in his beachside home in 1970 Los Angeles when he’s greeted by his old squeeze, Shasta (Katherine Waterson...

I'm not a fan of Inherent Vice much but it will inspire lots of fun fan art and/or official stuff... like this banner poster starring Katherine Waterston as "Shasta Fay". (Her hair is filled with secrets characters.)
I wish P.T. still wrote memorable female characters (sigh) even the kind of vacant bimbos like Rollergirl used to be awesome. With There Will Be Blood he basically left them behind altogether. Inherent Vice has a dozen or so female roles and only two of them are halfway interesting (Yay, Jena Malone and Jeannie Berlin cameos).
Uh-oh... I feel a list attack coming on. It can't be stopped
Female Characters in P.T. Anderson films from Most Fascinating to Least
(not comprehensive but the major ones)
Amber Waves (Boogie Nights) Linda Partridge (Magnolia) Rollergirl (Boogie Nights) Gwenovier (Magnolia) Lena Leonard (Punch-Drunk Love) Peggy Dodd (The Master) Clementine (Hard Eight) Jessie St Vincent...

Since on set extras dropping scoops is all the rage now (re: Jena Malone/Robin), I got a cool tidbit yesterday. It's a tad spoilerish fyi. Check it.
.Hi El,
I have some news regarding the BvS shoot. A couple of on set people have confirmed the occasion for the party thrown by Lex Luthor. It is the reopening of Metropolis Central Library post the battle for Metropolis. Lexcorp funded the construction because “Intellect is man’s biggest strength” which seems to be a direct shot at Superman.
Other small details tied to that scene, the movie will have an almost red carpet montage where the rich and famous are asked their views about the Superman who appeared in the public eye recently. The red carpet setup is attached, and will include both Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor being asked that question by Lois Lane and Clark Kent on the carpet.

As a big fan of the original novel, I cannot wait to see what Paul Thomas Anderson brings to the big screen with his adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice.
Anderson has been developing the project for a while now, with Robert Downey, Jr. originally set for the lead of Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello. And whilst Downey, Jr. ultimately moved on from the project, with Joaquin Phoenix now set to take the lead, the anticipation surrounding it hasn’t dimmed in the slightest.
Casting has been coming along nicely recently, with Owen Wilson and Benicio del Toro coming on board the project.
And now we have a few more names to add to the list, with Reese Witherspoon, Jena Malone, and Martin Short all joining alongside Phoenix, Wilson, and del Toro.

As well as enjoying some of the year's best album sales for her latest effort, 'Red', as well as being romanced by arguably the world's most desired teenager (sorry, Beliebers), the country singing star, still only 22, has been named the top of the list of most charitably-minded stars.
She was handed the award by bosses at Do.Something.org for donating $4 million to the Country Hall of Fame and Museum in Tennessee and becoming the youngest person to receive the Ripple of Hope Award from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for her philanthropic efforts.

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles made separate exits out of their NYC hotel this morning. She attended last night's Ripple of Hope Gala in the Big Apple, decked out in a ready-for-the-holidays sequined dress. The benefit, which was organized by the Robert F. Kennedy Center For Justice & Human Rights, was also attended many of her new Kennedy pals. Taylor, who performed on stage later in the night, first said hi to Kerry Kennedy and Robert Kennedy Jr. Robert posed on the carpet alongside his girlfriend, Suburgatory star Cheryl Hines. Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas also attended, as did emcee Alec Baldwin and his wife, Hilaria Thomas, and Homeland's Mandy Patinkin. Afterward, Taylor's night wasn't over - she met up with One Direction's Harry Styles! Taylor Swift and Harry Styles have grown close, and were even seen exploring NYC's Central Park Zoo together over the weekend. The two hit the town last night,...

Will the real Matt Bellamy - Muse charismatic frontman - please stand up?
Mr Bellamy is immediately and obviously a very interesting person - someone who recorded his unborn son's heartbeat in hospital and later put the sound on his band's new album (proud dad), an ethereal dreamer who came up with the title of his band's latest album while watching Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight (nerd), and the de factor son-in-law of Goldie Hawn (accredited bona fide A-lister).
The 2nd Law is Muse's sixth studio album - after 15 million records sold, Matt B says they're "evolving"
Okay, let's deal with the first, most exciting part of this lot, the unborn sounds of baby Bingham, born to Bellamy and partner Kate Hudson in July last year. Was this a planned musical collaboration?
He laughs (often).
"It was totally spontaneous, two days before the baby's arrival, and Kate was in hospital, with this.

Every year, almost as important as the Best Picture winner is the host of the Academy Awards. Both grab headlines the next day, and both are sure to endure their fair share of criticism.
With almost every host having to face the black-and-white judgments of "good host or bad host," who ranks among the best and the worst? Here's our take on the Oscar hosts worth awarding and the one's that should have been snubbed.

If someone hosts the show nine times, there's probably a good reason. Crystal carved out a niche for himself as the host of the big show starting in 1990 by keeping it light and throwing in a good song-and-dance routine for good measure.

They've tried everything. One host. Two hosts. Four hosts. 32 hosts. Comic hosts. Serious-thespian hosts. Hollywood-legend hosts. Young hosts. Old hosts. Hip hosts. Square hosts. Singing-and-dancing hosts. Every year, it seems, the Academy Awards goes back to the drawing board to figure out what sort of emcee will keep the show lively, attract viewers (especially younger viewers) and keep them from flipping channels during the slow parts. It's a thankless gig; no wonder Billy Crystal, who's done it eight times, decided to sit out for eight years before agreeing to return to host this year's Academy Awards on Sunday night. The job requires a difficult and rare set of skills: a host must entertain both the Hollywood big-shots in the auditorium and regular folks at home. They can poke fun at the huge egos in the room, but can't deflate them with too much snark, and they can't be too inside-baseball.

Diggle is a new character not found in the comic books, though the surname could be a nod to Green Arrow: Year One writer Andy Diggle. Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (Green Lantern) are producing Arrow along with Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe). Last night, Ben and I took to the red carpet in Leicester Square in London, England for the UK premiere of Zack Snyder’s new movie, Sucker Punch. Snyder has previously directed 300, Watchmen, and Dawn of the Dead (Ben would hurt me if I didn’t mention that one!) and from what we’ve seen in the trailers and clips, looks just as stunning as all his previous work.
We got to speak with Snyder and most of the leading ladies from the movie before they were whisked away into the cinema. You can see all our interviews right here.
While Ben was interviewing, I got a little snap-happy and managed to get photos of pretty much everyone who was out for the premiere including the new Superman himself, Henry Cavill. He didn’t do any interviews but I quite like some of the shots I got of him. To see the more comical ones,...

The Grammy Awards go down in Los Angeles this Sunday, January 31, but the biggest musical event of the next few days could actually come the day after. That's when Quincy Jones will be recording a new version of "We Are the World" that will be released as a charity single to benefit earthquake survivors in Haiti.
Jones is teaming up with Lionel Richie to organize the event, with "Crash" director Paul Haggis filming the session. A handful of singers are already attached to it (including Usher and John Legend), but the rest of the musicians who will show up to lend a hand (and a voice) have yet to be named officially. The original version of the song, recorded 25 years ago by an all-star lineup in support of relief in Africa, featured a veritable murderer's row of talent (along with a handful of "Oh yeah, that guy" entries). So let's...

I generally don't get into telethons. I mean, if I'm going to give, I'm just going to give—I don't need a cheesy Regis Philbin or whoever trying to cajole me into donating dollars while Howie Mandel demonstrates how many different ways he can wash his hands and Goldie Hawn revives a forgettable sketch from Laugh-In. But I must say: This Hope for Haiti Now telethon tonight is sounding like something that I can't miss, especially now that divas extraordinaire Beyoncé and Madonna have come on board.
