Not all television series are built with an eye toward earning critical acclaim and winning Primetime Emmys. Some shows are unabashedly formulaic, shuffling around tried-and-true plot turns the producers and writers know will satisfy their loyal viewers. Sure, prestige series like "Mad Men," "Deadwood," and "Succession" get all the plaudits, but hour-long franchises like "CSI," "NCIS," and the "One Chicago" universe bring in a ratings bonanza. And while networks and streamers dig awards, what they prize above all are ratings.
At best, these series combine savvy casting choices with punchy writing to concoct breezily effective procedurals that power you past their myriad implausibilities. They're akin to what we used to call "airplane reads" – i.e. briskly plotted novels that you pick up at an airport newsstand and tear through while enduring a long flight (perhaps people still do this). The Pitt may be a genuine hit for Max, but executive producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill aren’t necessarily looking to turn it into a full-blown franchise, as Dick Wolf has done with FBI, Law & Order and #OneChicago.
Though fans have been champing at the bit for even more Pitt content — perhaps, say, a spinoff set exclusively during the night shift at Ptmc that would bridge seasons of the main show — Wells and Gemmill do not wish to spread themselves too thin.

Over the past few years, the future of studios’ ability to assert First Amendment protections in casting decisions appeared to be compromised thanks to a couple of high-profile decisions from courts overseeing discrimination lawsuits filed by actors. The most recent came last year when a court rebuffed Disney’s bid to dismiss a case over Gina Carano’s firing from The Mandalorian in a ruling that explored whether free speech allows private companies to fire employees who publicly clash with their values. Before that was an order by another court advancing a lawsuit from Brent Sexton against Apple Studios, finding that the company may have discriminated against him by pulling a deal for him to star as Andrew Johnson in Manhunt for refusing the Covid-19 vaccine.
But on Friday, California’s Second Appellate District reversed that ruling under a California law that allows for the early dismissal of claims intended to chill free speech.

“Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips will return for the series’ second season.
“Dexter: Original Sin” is set in 1991 Miami and revolves around Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he goes from student to avenging serial killer. With guidance from his father, Harry (Christian Slater), the killer-in-training adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people without being discovered by law enforcement at the same time as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

With its macabre one-liners, revolving door of guest stars, and endless imagined homicides, "CSI" is one of the most recognizable network TV franchises of all time. Yet, despite well over a decade of success and extensive rerun appeal, the Anthony Zuiker-created property actually went off the air for a five year period. In 2016, the last "CSI" show that was still going, "CSI: Cyber," bowed out after just two seasons, and the TV world of the crime saga that began at the turn of the millennium went temporarily dark.
Like so many procedurals before it, "CSI" did eventually come back, offering up the Paula Newsome and Matt Lauria-led "CSI: Vegas" in 2021. That series returned to the show's trend of focusing on a different city (past hits have included "CSI: New York" and the infamously punny "CSI: Miami"), but it wasn't enough to save it. Viola Davis has left her mark in the Dcu, playing the role of Amanda Waller in various shows and films, but who would she play in the MCU? Unfortunately, her ideal role doesn't exist in the Marvel franchise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Davis was asked what Marvel character she would play if she were to join the MCU, as her character is jokingly called "Captain America" in her upcoming film, G20. Davis reveals that her daughter is a huge Marvel fan and that if she were to join the MCU, she would like to play "Iron Shaniqua Mania" or "Iron Mania" for short.

Character actor Denis Arndt, who appeared in Basic Instinct, a slate of David E. Kelley shows and earned a Tony nomination for his role in Broadway’s two-hander Heisenberg, has died at the age of 86, his family announced in an obituary published Wednesday.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our dad, Denis Leroy Arndt,” the statement read. “He died peacefully in his bed in his beloved cabin home of almost 50 years in Ashland, Oregon; he wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
Born Feb. 23, 1939 in Issaquah, Wash., Arndt served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart twice. Afterward, the soon-to-be prolific actor moved to Seattle, where a friend convinced him to audition for a local theater, paving the way to more onstage roles later in his career.
“Of course, Dad got the main role. And he was brilliant.

In the TV world, longevity goes hand in hand with spin-offs and offshoots. For Grey's Anatomy, which is now airing Season 21 with no signs of slowing, the medical drama series has spawned two spin-offs, namely Private Practice, and Station 19. Compared with other equally long-running franchises, two is a relatively small number — case in point, TV procedurals such as Chicago Fire, Law & Order, CSI, and the NCIS universes have birthed multiple more. However, this seemingly contained expansion was not due to a lack of creative ideas. Beyond the two Grey's Anatomy spin-offs that made it to screens, several others never materialized, and it was a deliberate creative choice, as now revealed by its original creator, Shonda Rhimes.
During her recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, where she reflected on the success of her Shondaland production over the last two decades, Rhimes revealed that she hatched a couple of spin-off ideas that fans never got to see.

There's no denying that police procedurals are popular in the world of television. These shows manage to showcase the intensity of crime scenes without becoming stale or boring. Not to mention, a lot of these shows manage to find a particular niche, providing fans with a ton of diversity and nuance.
While fans don't necessarily want these shows to be realistic, a few hiccups can cause a procedural to seem more like a sitcom than a gripping drama. It's evident that fans want to enjoy a fast-paced show without too much exposition, but a lot of police procedurals have the habit of including a lot of odd details to keep the plot flowing. As such, these details often keep audiences from fully immersing themselves in the story.

NCIS, co-created by Donald Bellisario and Don McGill, is one of the longest-running programs on television. But its origin goes much beyond its premiere in 2003. Although influenced by crime procedurals like Law & Order and CSI, the CBS thriller is hardly a by-product of those shows. Rather, it is a spin-off of a mid-90s military crime procedural, Jag, created by Donald Bellisario.

The 2000s and 2010s were a gold mine for police procedurals, and standing out among the bunch was Cold Case, a compelling fusion of nostalgia, twist-laden storylines, and often melancholic thematic heft. Premiering in 2003, the series dished up seven seasons of thoughtful drama and red-herring-rife thrills, using unique techniques to differentiate its past from its present. Amid staples like Law & Order, CSI, The Mentalist,Without a Trace, and the long-runningCriminal Minds, Cold Case remained true to the escapist formula cop show fans clamor for while balancing thematic depth in a compelling 45-minute mystery.

The popularity surrounding NCIS has made it almost impossible to believe that it is, in fact, the spin-off of a 1990s crime procedural drama. The parent series, titled Jag, premiered in 1995 and ran for 10 seasons before the spin-off took shape with Mark Harmon in the lead.

However, NCIS had one advantage that Jag lacked at its time of conception – the popularity of the crime procedural genre. With shows like CSI and Law & Order becoming the order of the day in every American household, NCIS took off amid high ratings and never looked back. Throughout its long run, Chuck Lorre’s Two and a Half Men featured several cameos and surprising crossovers, including one with CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The crossover centers on the investigation of Teddy Leopold’s murder after he is found dead in Charlie Harper’s house during his mother’s wedding reception.

The crime drama genre is never-ending, with new shows taking over television screens every now and then. In this, the CBS Network will definitely reign supreme, given that it has some of the most beloved crime dramas out there. From the gripping storytelling of CSI to NCIS, which is one of the longest-running shows out there, the network is a boon for a crime genre fan. While some shows have managed to continue for a very long time, others have had to put a stop in between.

Eric Stonestreet, the lovable goofball we know from ‘Modern Family,’ is jumping into a role that’s about as far from comedy as you can get. He’s set to creep us out in the new Showtime series ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ and I’m already hooked on the idea.
Stonestreet’s playing a serial killer named Al, a Midwestern guy with a chilling secret. It’s a wild leap from his days as Cameron Tucker, the over-the-top dad on ‘Modern Family.’ That show ran from 2009 to 2020, racking up 11 seasons and earning him two Emmys for his spot-on humor. Now, he’s ditching the laughs to join the twisted world of Dexter Morgan.
If you’re new to this, ‘Dexter’ first hit screens in 2006, following a forensics guy who moonlights as a vigilante killer. Michael C. Hall made the character a legend over eight seasons, even if the ending in 2013 left us scratching our heads.

You'll never guess which Modern Family star just landed a serial killer role on Dexter: Resurrection
Another Emmy-winning comedy actor has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, the upcoming sequel series to Dexter: New Blood. Eric Stonestreet, who famously played Cameron Tucker on all 11 seasons of Modern Family, has been tapped to recur on the series in what is believed to be a serial killer role.
The exclusive comes from Deadline, the same outlet that previously reported both Neil Patrick Harris and Krysten Ritter's casting news. Apparently, all three characters are playing serial killers as part of their guest-starring arcs. It remains to be seen if they're going to work together in some capacity, or just be one of several villains that Dexter has to eliminate.
Deadline says Stonestreet has been cast as a character named Al. Like the actor, Al also hails from the Midwest and will reportedly appear in four episodes as part of a "high profile guest-arc."

To do a little fun sci-fi time-crunching, Ridley Scott's 1979 film "Alien" takes place in the year 2122, which was, by the "Star Trek" timeline, about 30 years before the events of "Star Trek: Enterprise." James Cameron's "Aliens" skips ahead to 2179, about 25 years after "Enterprise," but still about 75 years before anything from the original "Star Trek" series. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Alien: Resurrection" skips ahead again, this time to the year 2379, which was the same year "Star Trek: Nemesis" took place.
Of course, the "Alien" movies and the "Star Trek" shows definitely take place in separate universes. The "Alien" movies are marked by their cynicism, usually depicting shifty, profit-driven company men who aim to retrieve alien xenomorphs for nefarious purposes, no matter the human cost the retrieval requires. "Star Trek," meanwhile, is marked by its optimism, depicting a future wherein a galactic Federation ensures peace, study, and diplomacy throughout the cosmos. One...

Another season of The Masked Singer brings time for guessing. Group B in season 13 is packed with some great celebrities and clue packages, and we’re breaking one of them down right now. It’s all about Griffin.
The panelists think they have an idea of who is under the mask. Rita Ora couldn’t decide between Matthew Lilliard and Freddie Prinze Jr. due to the scary movie connection, while Jenny guessed David Arquette for a similar reason. The horror connection may be something, but there was a line in the clue package that gave me a clue.
Could Griffin by a Dawson’s Creek star?
The “School’s Out” clue certainly initially seems to connect to a Saved By the Bell star, and you may think Mark-Paul Gosselaar at first. To be honest, there are a couple of other clues that seem to connect to him, such as his fast...

Early in 2023, it was confirmed that the psychological thriller Mindhunter would not return for a third season. Directed by David Fincher, known for films like Fight Club and Seven, the Netflix TV series depicts the founding of the FBI Behavioral Science unit. Following the efforts of FBI Agents to study serial killers, the series explores the psychological impact of wading into the darkest parts of the human psyche. The mix of experimental visuals with stories about scientific exploration created a groundbreaking and unique approach to depicting true crime stories that helped the series stand out in a glut of true crime content.
Mindhunter's stories and characters deeply resonated with fans of intense crime thrillers and received critical acclaim, but Netflix ultimately canceled the show. The shocking cancelation of the acclaimed series was initially attributed to David Fincher's need to focus on other projects for Netflix, like his Oscar-winning film Mank.

Of all the procedural crime shows that have had an impact on pop culture, CSI and NCIS have to be at the very top of the list. Both series have managed to keep their audiences hooked and a part of their ever-growing fandom since their debut. Considering the shelf life of a show these days, that has to be a feat in itself.

However, the success of NCIS is not entirely to the credit of its fan investment and the scriptwriters coming up with innovative storylines. The character chemistry plays a huge role in making the show’s cast instantly feel like family – to each other and to the fans. However, one beloved actor found it was time to leave the nest and, after 12 years, found her way back home again.

Television has radically changed since its "Golden Age" between the 1940s and 1960s. Writers take big leaps that change the game forever, actors are more involved with their characters, and the world-building is literally out of this world. To nail down the best television shows takes a lot of screen time and plenty of love for the creative experience.
The current era of television is certainly an exciting trip. Scripted shows are bending genres and captivating viewers on streaming, with social media playing a hand in upping viewership. Even when social media wasn't a marketing tool or a place where fans could share their love for complicated characters, TV shows still impressed viewers spectacularly. Some of the best TV shows of all time stem from the twisty, creepy aura of The Twilight Zone, all the way to Breaking Bad's meth-cooking cancer patient and Game of Thrones' fantastical landscape of winter,...

The ABC crime drama High Potential has been getting rave reviews since it premiered in September 2024. Fans have loved getting to see Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) investigating cases and solving crimes. But that’s really all some fans want to see.
Romantic storylines are not off the table for shows like this. They have occurred in many others, from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation to The X-Files. Sometimes, it works. It’s usually when there’s this unspoken chemistry between the two leads and fans cheer when the “will they, won’t they” question is resolved and they finally share a kiss or express their feelings. But High Potential shouldn’t go down this route if it wants to continue being as beloved as it is.

CSIhas become the staple television phenomenon that spawned multiple spin-offs and redefined the procedural. It is the series that ushered the televised procedural crime drama into American culture ever since its creation back in 2000. After 16 seasons and over 300 episodes, CSI said goodbye back in 2015 only to make a comeback late in 2021 with its original two cast members, Gil Grissom, played by William Peterson, and Sara Sidle, played by Jorja Fox, back in the lab.

Before he was writing half the shows on Paramount+, Taylor Sheridan was an actor. The man behind shows like "Yellowstone" and "Tulsa King" and the scripts for films including "Sicario" and "Hell or High Water" cut his teeth with screen work, a pastime he occasionally returns to when he needs someone to play, say, a cool cowboy who's dating Bella Hadid.
Years before he became known as a Hollywood cowboy, I knew Sheridan as a mysterious man named Danny Boyd in the plucky teen detective show "Veronica Mars," and as the hate-worthy cop Deputy David Hale on FX's "Sons of Anarchy." Those may have been two of Sheridan's most high-profile TV roles, but they're far from his only acting credits. The Rookie star Eric Winter continues to charm fans with his portrayal of Sgt. Tim Bradford. While the show in itself has gained a huge fan following since it began airing in 2018, Winter’s appeal can be credited for a large portion of that.

Bradford’s chemistry with the other characters on the show, be it with his love interest Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil), or friend and colleague Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) has been one of the most entertaining aspects of the show.
However, his dynamic with Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan is one for the books. Interestingly, much like Fillion, Winter, too has similar Hollywood dreams that he would like to fulfill in his career. Although he has spoken of it in interviews before, for now, they seem quite far-reaching.

Over the course of a career that stretched back to 1967, Peter Jason racked up more than 270 screen acting credits, turning in performances that inspired legendary filmmaker John Carpenter to name him “one of the great character actors in cinema” – and to cast him in seven different projects: Prince of Darkness, They Live, Body Bags, In the Mouth of Madness, Village of the Damned, Escape from L.A., and Ghosts of Mars. Sadly, Carpenter has now had to take to social media to break the news to his fans and followers that Jason has passed away at the age of 80. Carpenter wrote, “His first movie was Howard Hawks’ Rio Lobo. He was a dear friend and I’ll miss him terribly.“
It is true that the 1970 film Rio Lobo was Jason’s first theatrical feature, but he already had three years of TV acting to his name at that point, with credits...
