Sure, prestige series like "Mad Men," "Deadwood," and "Succession" get all the plaudits, but hour-long franchises like "CSI," "NCIS," and the "One Chicago" universe bring in a ratings bonanza. And while networks and streamers dig awards, what they prize above all are ratings.

At best, these series combine savvy casting choices with punchy writing to concoct breezily effective procedurals that power you past their myriad implausibilities. They're akin to what we used to call "airplane reads" – i.e. briskly plotted novels that you pick up at an airport newsstand and tear through while enduring a long flight (perhaps people still do this). Over the past few years, the future of studios’ ability to assert First Amendment protections in casting decisions appeared to be compromised thanks to a couple of high-profile decisions from courts overseeing discrimination lawsuits filed by actors. The most recent came last year when a court rebuffed Disney’s bid to dismiss a case over Gina Carano’s firing from The Mandalorian in a ruling that explored whether free speech allows private companies to fire employees who publicly clash with their values. Before that was an order by another court advancing a lawsuit from Brent Sexton against Apple Studios, finding that the company may have discriminated against him by pulling a deal for him to star as Andrew Johnson in Manhunt for refusing the Covid-19 vaccine.

But on Friday, California’s Second Appellate District reversed that ruling under a California law that allows for the early dismissal of claims intended to chill free speech.

The highly popular prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” was the most streamed original for Showtime in a decade, per The Wrap, so it’s no surprise that the show has been renewed for Season 2 at Paramount+ with Showtime.

“Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips will return for the series’ second season.

“Dexter: Original Sin” is set in 1991 Miami and revolves around Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he goes from student to avenging serial killer. Character actor Denis Arndt, who appeared in Basic Instinct, a slate of David E. Kelley shows and earned a Tony nomination for his role in Broadway’s two-hander Heisenberg, has died at the age of 86, his family announced in an obituary published Wednesday.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our dad, Denis Leroy Arndt,” the statement read. “He died peacefully in his bed in his beloved cabin home of almost 50 years in Ashland, Oregon; he wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

Born Feb. 23, 1939 in Issaquah, Wash., Arndt served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart twice. Afterward, the soon-to-be prolific actor moved to Seattle, where a friend convinced him to audition for a local theater, paving the way to more onstage roles later in his career.

Indie studio Blue Ant Media, producer of unscripted series like Canada’s Drag Race and Northwoods Survival, has unveiled plans for a reverse IPO to trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange by acquiring assets from Boat Rocker Media Inc.

Blue Ant, a private company controlled by former Alliance Atlantis head Michael McMillan, will go public via a reverse-takeover of Insight Productions, Jam Filled Entertainment and Proper Television picked up from Boat Rocker Media. As part of the deal, Boat Rocker Media will acquire all shares of Blue Ant, at a price of $2.25 each, or a 125 percent premium to the March 21 closing price of Boat Rocker Media stock.

After the completion of the transaction, shares in Blue Ant Media Corp. will trade on the Tso. As part of the transaction, Blue Ant shareholders are expected to own a 73.5 percent stake in the Toronto-based media company, with Boat Rocker Media shareholders retaining a 26.5 percent holding.

Wings Hauser, the father of Cole Hauser and an instantly-recognizable character actor who had roles on just about every action-based TV series in the past 50 years, died over the weekend at the studio he shared with wife Cali Lili Hauser. He was 77.

Hauser began his TV career in the ’70s on episodes of staples such as Canon, Baretta and Emergency!

“Movie icon Wings Hauser took flight in the arms of his film and music partner, Cali Lili Hauser, at their studio this weekend,” Hauser’s official Facebook page announced.

Now, he’s ditching the laughs to join the twisted world of Dexter Morgan.

If you’re new to this, ‘Dexter’ first hit screens in 2006, following a forensics guy who moonlights as a vigilante killer. Michael C. Hall made the character a legend over eight seasons, even if the ending in 2013 left us scratching our heads.

Another Emmy-winning comedy actor has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, the upcoming sequel series to Dexter: New Blood. Eric Stonestreet, who famously played Cameron Tucker on all 11 seasons of Modern Family, has been tapped to recur on the series in what is believed to be a serial killer role.

The exclusive comes from Deadline, the same outlet that previously reported both Neil Patrick Harris and Krysten Ritter's casting news. Apparently, all three characters are playing serial killers as part of their guest-starring arcs. It remains to be seen if they're going to work together in some capacity, or just be one of several villains that Dexter has to eliminate.

Deadline says Stonestreet has been cast as a character named Al. Like the actor, Al also hails from the Midwest and will reportedly appear in four episodes as part of a "high profile guest-arc."

To do a little fun sci-fi time-crunching, Ridley Scott's 1979 film "Alien" takes place in the year 2122, which was, by the "Star Trek" timeline, about 30 years before the events of "Star Trek: Enterprise." James Cameron's "Aliens" skips ahead to 2179, about 25 years after "Enterprise," but still about 75 years before anything from the original "Star Trek" series. Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Alien: Resurrection" skips ahead again, this time to the year 2379, which was the same year "Star Trek: Nemesis" took place.

The "Alien" movies are marked by their cynicism, usually depicting shifty, profit-driven company men who aim to retrieve alien xenomorphs for nefarious purposes, no matter the human cost the retrieval requires. The ABC crime drama High Potential has been getting rave reviews since it premiered in September 2024. Fans have loved getting to see Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) investigating cases and solving crimes. But that’s really all some fans want to see.

Romantic storylines are not off the table for shows like this. They have occurred in many others, from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation to The X-Files. Sometimes, it works. It’s usually when there’s this unspoken chemistry between the two leads and fans cheer when the “will they, won’t they” question is resolved and they finally share a kiss or express their feelings. But High Potential shouldn’t go down this route if it wants to continue being as beloved as it is.
