    Almost lost

I remember nothing about this show, which was on when I was seven years old, but for some reason, the theme song stays with me to this day: "King Kong/You know the name of...King Kong/You know the fame of...King Kong/Ten times as big as a man!" I can't remember my niece's birthday, but I remember that stupid song. Why?

    Theme Songs when they Mattered!

I was a toddler when this came out and prone to music. (When I graduated from Kindergarten, my teacher actually wrote on my final report card: "Lambiepie loves music, I would not be surprised if Lambiepie became a musician.")

I'm only sharing this because this cartoon of King Kong wasn't that spectacular, but the theme song...now they worked on that! It was memorable, it was catchy, it was "da-bomb". And yes, I remember it too!!

The early to mid sixties were a wonderful time for cartoon programming. There was a lot of experimentation, such as with King Kong. But the them songs were more than just a tune -- they got you involved in the cartoon, interested -- and the best stayed with you. King Kong's theme song was like the theme to "Jonny Quest" - you knew something was "cool" about to happen. But unlike "Jonny Quest", King Kong did not deliver. Maybe it was the "little boy" with King Kong when we all kinda figured out the beauty and the beast thing...maybe they dumbed it down to our generation when we wanted caliber toons like Jonny Quest and Astro Boy, GIGANTOR and shows like Ultra Man, etc. Tom T.H.U.M.B. wasn't that memorable either. I remember "Inch High Private Eye" and "Atom Ant" though...

But I'll side with all my fellow posters here. It's the memorable theme song that would make you remember King Kong at all. This is a classic cartoon theme song along with "GIGANTOR", "Kimba the White Lion", "Spiderman". Lush production, serious musicianship. And the cartoon? Nah - nothing to write home about.

Peter Jackson's homage to King Kong is due out any day and I've gotta say... this song should be included. It would kick butt. :)

And they only did 8 eps why?

Don't know if i can drag this out for the minimum number but i'll try. I'm 32, so obviously did not grow up in the 60's but i had an old VHS tap[e and on the tape was 2 episodes of this. I don't like King Kong never have. I liked this though. Then the VCR broke, Dvd's came out etc for years. A good 25 years after i saw the cartoons i found this at Ollies for like 5 bucks. I put it on the shelf to watch and eventually came around top it. I always loved the song. I kept listening to that. Even asked Mom if she remembered it. She did. The kids are somewhat annoying but what kid isn't? The song is great. Good show.

    This Show...

The cartoon was a bit of nothing, but the song--very strong branding! Starstruck got the chorus, the rest goes like this: "One day a boy/Too young to know the danger/Made a friend/Of this giant, fearsome stranger./And the life they lead/On their island home/Became the legend/The legend OF... (chorus)" This song's been in my head all day.

Now, you would think that, with a big guy like King Kong walking around, you'd have giant monsters up against him, but Kong and Billy spent most of their time fighting poachers and smugglers, villains like that. Although this Rankin/Bass cartoon may have become the basis of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, "Frankenstein, Jr.". In that show, boy scientist Buzz Conroy flew around fighting evil on the back of a giant Frankenstein monster robot.

    • Anecdotes
The Toho film La Revanche de King Kong (1967) is a live action spin-off and tie-in to this TV series (although none of the human characters from the TV series appear in it) and it is not a sequel to King Kong contre Godzilla (1962), an earlier Toho film also featuring King Kong, as many people believe.
